Fr.Carl’sCorner It was a different kind of mission, but a thoughtful and prayerful one nonetheless! Why different? It was not just listening to a speaker but am invitation for us to recall and reflect upon the darkness and brokenness of our world, as well as the personal pain we carry in our own hearts and lives. Trusting God’s mercy, we find hope for the world and ourselves as, we recall, that all of this is tied up in our faith in Jesus. All our personal crosses are connected to his, reminding us with the cross there is resurrection and new life. In the meantime, God can work with us and heal us in our

care and conversation with one another. There were two very beautiful experiences I felt for those who attended our mission. First, we were invited to write on a card our own personal care or pain we might be holding. It was placed in a basket and was part of our prayer the first night we gathered. On the last evening, those present were invited to join a circle, a small group literally sitting in a circle and lead by a circle keeper, for conversation. It was an opportunity for all to speak their concerns, share their pain and joy if they so chose. Examples of the questions were: Where are you wounded today? When did you experience a resurrection after a Good Friday? How can the church be a sign of hope in this broken/hurting world? This was different but a powerful way for those who came the last night to listen to each other, to share hurts, but also hear and be healed in sharing and letting the Holy Spirit work in such experiences, as only the Holy Spirit can! Thank you to all who attended and to all those who were involved in planning the mission, reading, singing, playing instruments and to all our circle leaders. Special thanks to Fr. David, Sister Donna and Sister Janet (from PBMR) for their presence and leadership through our mission. This year, our Holy Thursday Collection will go to assist the work of Precious Blood Ministry of Reconciliation (PBMR). The main work of PBMR is to restore human dignity through hospitality, hope and healing of conflicts and violence in the Back of the Yards community on the south side of Chicago. Let’s pray for a speedy end to the Coronavirus. Pray for those who are sick and that fear not paralyze us in unnecessary ways. Wash hands and if sick, it is best for you to stay home until the situation is under control. We will continue to be safe in our practices at Mass: no communion cup and no shaking hands at the sign of peace until further notice. Let’s not forget the great message of faith that comes from our readings this week reminding us about the journey of faith. Trust in God who is with us and saves us! Have a safe and good week ahead. With you a Christian. For you a priest.

ANNUNCIATION HOUSE www.annunciationhouse.org

Annunciation House is a volunteer organization that offers hospitality to migrants, immigrants, and refugees in the border region of El Paso, Texas. Since its founding in 1978, it has provided shelter, clothing, food and other basic necessities for hundreds of thousands of migrants, mostly from Mexico and Central America. It also participates in advocacy and education around immigration issues and seeks to be a voice for justice and compassion, especially on behalf of the most marginalized of our society. Rooted in Catholic social justice teaching, the volunteers of Annunciation House live simply and in community, in the same houses as the guests they serve. CATHOLIC EXTENSION AND LA POSADA PROVIDENCIA

www.catholicextension.org Sister Zita Telkamp is director of La Posada Providencia in San Benito, Texas. The center provides emergency shelter for men,

women and children fleeing from political oppression, violence and poverty and seeking asylum in the United States. It opened in 1989 and now has five full-time employees and 20 volunteers who serve 400 immigrants annually. They offer housing, food, English classes and transportation. “We teach life skills,” said Sister Telkamp of the Congregation of Divine Providence. “We don’t preach the Gospel, but we live it by what we do.” The shelter operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and has served immigrants from nearly 80 countries. Catholic Extension works in solidarity with La Posada Providencia and many other organizations to provide assistance to the most needy.

Lent at St. Giles The Third Sunday of Lent: An Encounter with Jesus

Two persons from different worlds and traditions meet on a hot day and strike up a conversation about being thirsty. Jesus’ simple request for a drink literally uncorks questions and feelings that the woman has kept bottled up inside her. Her directness prompts Jesus to delve a little further. Their conversation goes from the surface to the depths. When she recognizes him as a prophet, she wants to know what prophets know. When he tells her about her secrets, she is free. Her status changed to that of disciple, she runs back to town to announce the good news to her townspeople.

Imagine in our time meeting Jesus at a highway rest stop.

What would our conversation sound like? -Sr. Mary McNulty, O.P.

Read and Reflect this Lent Lent is a season in which we are called to carve out time for God in the chaos of our lives. One way to do that is through spiritual reading. Each week this Lent, we will review a book that might call to you—perhaps you can add it to your Lenten reading!

The Ministry of Reconciliation, Robert J Schreiter, CPPS In a world of conflict and in which religious differences play a significant role, reconciliation grows increasingly important. The Ministry of Reconciliation shows how with a spirituality of reconciliation we can create the spaces in which reconciliation can happen, and with human strategies, how the process of reconciliation can move forward. For all those working to overcome the effects of violence – whether in communities and societies, or even in neighborhoods and families - The Ministry of Reconciliation offers a sure guide and inspiration to the way of divine shalom.

Confirmation Day

Primary students celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday, an annual tradition at St. Giles! They read his books, colored keepsake bookmarks and made Cat in the Hat hats.

Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss

Last Saturday, many young parishioners were confirmed by Bishop Ron Hicks - a southside Cubs fan! He spoke to the 83 confirmandi asking them, “Who Are You? You can tell them the basics-your name, your age, your nationality, but tell them you are a child of God. Today, the Holy Spirit comes down to lead and guide you for the rest of your life.” He invited them to come up for a blessing and told them not to be nervous; but to be open and ask for the Holy Spirit to come down upon them. He invited those in the pews to pray and remind themselves of why they are here and their commitment to God. He was glad to be a part of St. Giles for this special day and thanked Fr. Carl for his good works here.

Last Friday, our eighth graders participated in the annual World War I presentation. Through primary sources and interactive activities, such as simulations seen here, students engaged in learning about the causes of World War I, trench warfare, the sinking of the Lusitania, and more. Many thanks to alumni parent/parishioner, Paula Goedert, who comes every year to make this amazing presentation!

“The World in Which Jesus Lived” Presenter: Deacon John Walters

You won’t want to miss this special Lenten event. Many of us have already had the pleasure of hearing Deacon John preach at Mass or at Communion services. On March 18, we will have an opportunity to spend a morning with him as he helps us prepare for celebrating the sacred days of Holy Week. His presentation will be a broad look at the life and times in which Jesus lived. It will touch on the political, cultural and religious world into which Jesus was born. Knowing more about the historical content of Jesus’ world can deepen our understanding of the events in the Gospel narratives. Come join us at the 8:30 a.m. morning Mass and then we will gather together in McDonough Hall. Mark your calendar and contact Anna Marie Sciaraffa at (773) 237-7375 or [email protected].

As always, St. Giles Seniors welcome all retired or semi-retired parishioners to any of its programs during the year, whether you would like to become an official member or just an occasional participant. A reminder for our regular members: Millie DeSimini will be on hand to accept our 2020 membership fees ($25, which includes free entry to our annual Christmas Party). If you want to know more about us, please call Anna Marie Sciaraffa at 773-237-7375 or Russ Parker at 773-237-8960.
