ACTIVITY GOALS:–Activity to check Monster Ch 12 notes–Keys at each lab bench; see white board for

the amount of time– If you have questions put them on your Q & A sheet, and SEE A TEACHER!**Answers mean NOTHING if you

don’t ‘get’ WHY the answer is what it is!!! PROCESS (discussion/ rationale) is more important than PRODUCT (answer)**

19. Black dwarf vs. black hole?

1 2 3

0% 0%0%

1. Dwarf: small, burned out star; Black hole: collapsed giant star

2. Black hole : small, burned out star; Dwarf: collapsed giant star

3. They are the same thing

Page 30: March 15 & 18

20. Why would Earth not be sucked into the sun If it became a black hole?

1 2 3 4

0% 0%0%0%

1. Mass is different 2. Mass remains the same 3. Magic4. This is not true- earth would

definitely be sucked into the sun!

Page 31: March 15 & 18

• The gravitational field NEAR the black hole is enormous. But the field BEYOND the original radius of the star is no different after collapse than before…in other words, no different as a black hole than as a star. – The amount of mass has not

changed, so there is no change in the field at any point beyond this distance.

– If our sun was to turn into a black hole today, Earth would orbit as usual since it is outside the radius of the original sun

Page 32: March 15 & 18

• The gravitational field strength near a giant star that collapses to become a black hole is the same before collapse (left) and after collapse (right).

• It is only when you get CLOSE that gravity starts to change.– If you get within a distance smaller than the original radius

of the star, gravity starts to change. This “edge” is called the event horizon – once you cross it, nothing can escape…not even light
