Mary, Mother of our Lord LBW Service of the Word
Gathered to Grow ~ Sent to Serve
Mary’s role is not limited to giving birth to Jesus and mothering him in his childhood. In John’s gospel, she is among the women standing near the cross; in Acts, she is among the disciples awaiting the gift of the Spirit. Through all that happened she continued to see how God was at work through her son, keeping the ancient promises to her ancestors, brushing aside the rich and powerful, and focusing on those as poor and powerless as Mary herself.

DIALOG LBW p. 26 Holy is the Lord, the Almighty,
He was, he is, and he is to come.He is worthy of glory and honor and power.
He created all things. By his will they came to be.Worthy is Christ, the Lamb who was slain;
worthy to take the scroll and break its seals.By his blood he purchased for God
people of every race and tongue, of every folk and nation.Christ made of them a kingdom
and priests to serve our God.And they shall reign on earth forever.
Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
APOSTLES’ CREED LBW p. 128 God has made us his people through our Baptism into Christ. Living together in trust and hope, we confess our faith.
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary.He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell.
On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.
Amen
OLD TESTAMENT CANTICLE: Change My Heart, O God
PRAYER OF THE DAY
The Lord be with you.And also with you.
Let us pray. . . .
Almighty God, in choosing the virgin Mary to be the mother of your Son, you made known your gracious regard for the poor, the lowly, and the despised. Grant us grace to receive your word in humility, and so to be made one with your Son, Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
FIRST LESSON: Isaiah 61:7-11The First Lesson is from the 61st chapter of Isaiah. 7Because [the] shame [of God’s people] was double, and dishonor was proclaimed as their lot, therefore they shall possess a double portion; everlasting joy shall be theirs. 8For I the LORD love justice, I hate robbery and wrongdoing; I will faithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them. 9Their descendants shall be known among the nations, and their offspring among the peoples; all who see them shall acknowledge that they are a people whom the LORD has blessed. 10I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my whole being shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. 11For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations.
Here ends the reading.
Psalmody Luke 1: 46-55 46And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, 47and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; 49for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. 50His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. 51He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. 52He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; 53he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. 54He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, 55according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever.
SECOND LESSON: Galatians 4:4-7The Second Lesson is from the 4th chapter of Galatians.
4When the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. 6And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God.
Here ends the reading.
GOSPEL: John 6:35,41-51 The Holy Gospel according to John the 6th chapter. Glory to you, O Lord.
Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 41Then the Jews began to complain about him because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven." 42They were saying, "Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, 'I have come down from heaven'?" 43Jesus answered them, "Do not complain among yourselves. 44No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me; and I will raise that person up on the last day. 45It is written in the prophets, 'And they shall all be taught by God.' Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me. 46Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. 47Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life. 48I am the bread of life. 49Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. 51I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh."Glory to you, O Lord.
The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

ELCA News: Phoebe Hospital in Liberia, A few years back a group of women from ELCA went on a mission trip to Liberia and toured the Phoebe Hospital. During this trip, the women recognized a need for this church, as it had electricity provided by old diesel generators. A fundraising project was started for a company to supply solar panels to provide electricity. The project was successful, and they are now using solar energy, which allows them to have x-ray machines and doctors are no longer performing surgeries in the dark. The hospital is saving over $35,000.00 annually. This is the first solar hospital of its kind in the world. Our women of
