GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT NEWS & NOTES

ALL STUDENTS:

Interims for Quarter 3 came out last week. Please be sure to check your grades in

each class. Counselors are available to meet with you if you are struggling and need

additional support. Also, be sure to take advantage of your teachers’ afternoon

office hours if you need extra help with the course material.

Counselors are available for in-person or virtual appointments. Please reach out to your counselor if you

are struggling with managing your emotions, having difficulty with your schoolwork, or just would like to

connect with a supportive adult 😊 WE ARE HERE FOR YOU!

SOPHOMORES

• This week Counselors provided make-up zoom workshops for students who missed last week’s

sessions on Exploring Careers and Future Planning. During this lesson, students took a career

interest survey to help identify career paths that are a good fit with their personality, preferences,

and goals. Students who missed this workshop need to contact their guidance counselor. Students

MUST complete this activity prior to choosing classes for next year. Keep an eye out for

JUNIORS:

• Counselors recently provided several Zoom Workshops on Future Planning (College, Careers,

Military). Be sure to ask your students about them!

• SATS: Students who plan to apply to 4-year colleges & universities should

register to take the SAT at WDHS in May or June. The deadline to register for

the May 8th SAT is April 8th. The deadline to register for the June 5th is May 6th.

SOPHOMORES & JUNIORS

Planning for college can be complicated and overwhelming. That’s why we wanted to tell you

about College Board Big Future Days. Between March and April 2021, College Board will host

four free virtual college fairs designed to help students have real conversations with

hundreds of colleges, admission representatives, and current college students. Any student

can attend, but we especially encourage sophomores and juniors to

attend any event (and even more than one!) to explore their college

options in each region across the country. Go to

SENIOR SCHOLARSHIP SPOTLIGHT:

• Julia Polk Parham Award: $1000 scholarship for African American females

who plan to attend a 4-year college or university. Applicants should be high-

achieving students, and the application includes an essay. Please see Naviance for

more details.

• Robert M. Bess Memorial Scholarship: $1000 scholarship for a student who plans

to attend Rowan University, Rowan College South Jersey, St. Bonaventure University,

Thomas Edison State University, or Wilmington University and must exemplify the Five

Areas of Excellence as explained in the scholarship details available in Naviance.

• Sisters That are Rendering Service, Inc., the charitable arm of Upsilon Delta Omega Chapter of Alpha

Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., is awarding four (4) $2,000 scholarships to three female and one male high

school seniors. Applicants must be African American; attend a public or parochial high school in

Camden, Gloucester, Salem, or Burlington County; and have a minimum of a 85 GPA. See Naviance for

application details. The deadline for submitting a complete application is Friday, April 30, 2021.

• Rizzieri Aveda Cosmetology School is offering several $1250 scholarships for students interested in

cosmetology, skin care, manicuring or barbering. If interested, please contact your guidance counselor.

• New Jersey Electronic Security Association Scholarship: $1500 - $2000 scholarships available for

students who have a parent who is a full-time paid member of a NJ police, sheriff or fire department.

Awards are based on academic achievement, SAT or ACT scores, essay and a resume listing academic

awards, hobbies, extracurricular activities, and work history. Additional information and applications are

available in Naviance.

• Numerous RCSJ Scholarships are available. https://www.rcsj.edu/scholarships/gloucester.

Seniors should check Naviance weekly for available $cholarships. New opportunities are added frequently!

Also, be sure to look in the Guidance Google Classroom for Seniors to find other tools that can help in

searching for scholarships.

AMAZON FUTURE ENGINEERS

Through Amazon Class Chats and the Amazon Future Engineer program, we’ve been paired with an Amazon Web Services Professional – Javonne Mante -- to deliver a virtual career talk and in which he will discuss his professional journey and help us better understand what it’s like to work in the tech industry... and what it takes to get there! BOYS SPRING TRACK

Boys Spring Track Sign Up Meeting will be held on Monday, March 15th at 2:00 pm in the Auxiliary Gym. Please be on time and wear a mask. If you cannot make it to the meeting, contact Coach Dixon at [email protected].

It’s March Mammal Madness time, and all of Mrs. Castone’s Biology classes are

participating by developing their brackets and following the bouts on social media.

Attention All High School Aged Students!

The West Deptford Little League Organization is

hosting two "Little League Complex Clean Up" days

where they plan on cleaning up the complex, spreading

new dirt throughout the fields, and doing a large amount

of painting. They are looking for high school-aged

students to help! The two dates are:

Sunday March 21st: 9am-12pm

Saturday March 27th: 9am-12pm

If you have any interested students, please have them reach out to Mr. Morrell.
