Book Week Celebrations We have just enjoyed another busy Book Week thanks to the hard work of Mrs Buchanan. Students were involved in a variety of experiences that supported this year’s theme, ‘Champions Read!’ Students moved amongst the classrooms to engage in further activities related to the shortlisted books for 2012. Congratulations to all of our students who dressed as champions, creating a colourful and memorable literacy event.

Thanks to those families who could join us on the day. Our families supported the book fair brilliantly to the tune of $800, selecting from a great range of books. A large percentage of sales will help to buy further books for our students.

Handball Competition 2012 Round 1 of our handball competition was almost completed this week due to overwhelming interest from our students. Not only are we seeing heightened skills but great sportsmanship. Congratulations to those who have made it to the finals which will take place next week. Hawkesbury Music Festival Mrs Sadler and the school choir have been working hard towards their performance at the Hawkesbury Music Festival on Monday 15th October. We have been allocated 1 ticket per performer however extra tickets can be requested on the forms sent home last Wednesday. We will be advised if our extra ticket requests have been successful later in the term. Start Smart – Financial Literacy Our students in Year 1-6 will now be involved in the ‘Start Smart’ financial literacy program on Thursday 22nd November, 2012. This program is aimed at helping students understand the importance of saving and how banking works. This is a free program offered by the Commonwealth Bank. Life Education Life Education will visit our school on 15th and 16th November 2012. We hope that P&C will once again subsidise part of the costs to families. Further information will be forwarded home next term about this worthwhile program. Lunch Orders – BP Lunch orders can now be purchased from the BP Shop. This service is offered ONLY on non-canteen days. This is a service we are trialling with the help of the BP’s new management. The orders must be made in person and paid for at the time of ordering. They will then be delivered to the office at 12:30pm. Once again, in keeping with our commitment towards our students making healthy eating choices, only items from the specific school menu may be ordered. Menus are available from the BP Shop or the school office.

Kindergarten Orientation 2013! A reminder that our orientation evening is planned for 14th November, 2012 at 6:00pm. On this night we aim to outline the year ahead for Kindergarten 2013 and offer parents the information they need in order to assist their child to make a smooth transition to school. Part of this process will involve three student orientation sessions at school, in order to help familiarise students with school routines and some activities. Dates for these student visits to school are: Friday 16th November Wednesday 21st November Friday 30th November Once again, if you have a child starting next year or know of someone who is thinking of sending their child to Maraylya Public School next year, please contact the office for an enrolment form. Please bring with you, proof of address, vaccination details and birth certificate. We will be sending home invitations next week now that we have an indication of student numbers. Relieving Administrative Manager Mrs Carrington will continue her leave until at least Term’s end. We thank Mrs Kennedy, Mrs Smithson and Mrs Reinhardt for stepping in to help us during this time. Parent Teacher Interviews Families should be receiving the interview confirmations today for next week’s interviews. Please contact the office if you require an interview request form. Year 6 Farewell meeting We will be having a meeting in the staffroom at 3:15pm on Friday 7th September for any Year 6 parents who would like to assist in the organisation of the Year 6 Farewell. The meeting should last no longer than 45 minutes.

Class News K Kindergarten looked fantastic in their champions outfits last Wednesday. We made cards for Holly Lincoln-Smith who came to talk to the school about winning a bronze medal at the Olympics. Kindergarten got their photos taken with her. These photos will be up in our classroom soon.

1 Just a few procedural reminders. Homework is due on Friday and the next week’s homework will be sent home on Friday. The children should have a pencil and glue stick at school. Year 1 have written some great descriptions about plants. We will now be looking at how to write great procedures. In Mathematics we have been trying to increase our speed at remembering our number combinations to 10 and 20. We are practising our addition and subtraction daily. Thank you to our families for your support of our Book Week celebrations. The students looked like champions!

2/3 In the last two weeks, 2/3 have made great progress. During reading we have introduced school magazines and have been looking at how to read them. We have started writing groups on Monday which seem to be working very well. If anyone would like to help in these groups on a Tuesday at 10:15 until recess, please let us know. For the second half of this term we have been working on writing narratives. Year 3 are becoming very excited as our camp is only 1 ½ weeks away. While we are on camp, Year 2 will join Year 1 and Kindy for a soft toy pet show on Wednesday 19th September.

4/5 4/5 have spent 4 weeks completing their assignments on one of the First Fleet ships. Over the next 2 weeks students will be presenting their PowerPoint to the whole class. There are many things 4/5 will be finishing this week. We are finishing reading ‘Matilda’ and completing our diary entries and book reviews. We have begun learning about ‘flight’ as our new Science topic for the rest of the term. In Mathematics, we are learning about chance and designing our own scenarios to place on our class chance line. 4/5 are looking forward to camp in Week 10.

6 Year 6 have been busy consolidating learning about the gold rush era in Australian history. We are writing explanations of how one of the pieces of equipment from this era works. In other writing, we have been involved with the Sydney Morning Herald Youngest Writer Competition. Students had to respond to a photograph in order to create a written piece. While some students are still finishing their work this week, the standard of writing has greatly improved as they learn how to apply adjectives, similes and metaphors to add detail to what is written. We have voted on our favourite narrative and will submit it today. In Mathematics we have spent further time on division, scale drawing and long multiplication. We are also getting close to our trip to Bathurst and Katoomba in Week 10. We hope to learn a great deal more about the Goldrush, rainforests and challenging ourselves with abseiling. A reminder that the two assignments are due next week!
