Last issue we spoke of the artillery bat-tery on the summit of Monte de lasCenizas. As one travels towards Portmanabout 100 metres from the Cenizasentrance one will see the sign forCalzada Romana. This is the top end ofthe recently refurbished Roman roadinto Portman. Upon reaching the bottomone may choose left and venture throughthe pines of the Calblanque Park andvisit another battery, La Chappa, next tothe Portman lighthouse and above thesmall beach, Playa Lastre.

The large beach beyond the estuary isPlaya San Bruno which is soon to beregenerated into a dune filled sports andwalking area. Within the current metalfenced area will be a marina for 731 ves-sels and a new esplanade and beachsome 250 metres inland from the currentbeach. Alternatively turning right androunding the roundabout towardsPortman one passes the Roman VillaPeturro, whose mosaics, among otherantiquities, may be seen in Portman's

Further down theroad, and justbefore the derelictLavadero deRoberto ore pro-cessing complex onthe left, one passesover a bridgemarking the west-

ernmost boundary of the CalblanqueRegional Park. Almost a third of themountainous ring that surroundsPortman is regional Park.

Just at the entrance to Portman properand perched on the side of a hill on theright is another of the processing build-ings. This was linked to the Jose Maestremine by an over 2 kilometre but nowderelict rail system, some of which is stillin existence. However the processingplant area has been fenced off by theowners for safety reasons. Above thisprocessing plant one can see one of thetwo gigantic flues that overlookPortman. Smoke and gasses werebrought to the flues from the processingplants through a warren of above groundtunnels, some of which are still intact. Ifyou are lucky enough to visit Portman atnight you will see this flue illuminated, asight to be seen. On the other side ofPortman one may go left to the old portand beach, or right, foot access only, onCalle 33, the ancient road to La Unionwhich passes by the San Jose mining pitand ends across from the FEVE rail sta-tion in La Union. Care must be taken onthis road as the way is not marked andsome areas are difficult.

It's a busy month or two of festivities andfiestas in Spain. In the Murcia regionthere's Easter (Semana Santa), followedclosely by Bando de la Huerta and theBurial of the Sardine.Last year we were lucky enough to spendtime in both Cartagena and Murcia to enjoythe celebrations. Here's a quick summaryof our activities and what we got up to withmy top five tips for enjoying Spanish fies-tas. We visited Easter celebrations inMurcia, Cartagena and Moratalla. In Cartagena we saw the Romans, whowere refreshing themselves at a bar. Nodoubt they were enjoying their mulsum anddormice (Roman favourites I'm assured bywikipedia, so it must be true!), before pop-ping off to the vomitorium.

In Moratalla drum-mers deafened us.Allegedly (and I'mhoping someonewith more knowl-edge will correct meif I'm wrong) Jesuswas a drummer. Soin Moratalla theycelebrate by bang-ing drums, big

ones, everyone - children, grannies, bigkids, even adults. The only day they stopbanging the drums is on the Saturdaybefore Easter Sunday - because Jesuscouldn't drum when he was dead. The restof the time leading up to Easter they drum- from morning till night and through tomorning again.

And in Murcia we got locked into the mid-dle of the processions and had to stay in abar for a few extra drinks (oh dear!). Then on the first Tuesday after Easter wehad Bando De La Huerta ('proclamation ofthe countryside'). If there's one fiesta thatyou should go to in Murcia (apart from yourlocal village's of course, more about thatlater!), this is it. Simply eschewing shortsand tee shirts will not be enough to prevent

you from standing outas the extranjero in thisfiesta. About 90% of thepeople at the festivalwear national dress, sotake a camera! Thereare lots of stalls whereyou might be lucky toget a sample of tradi-tional local food anddrink - alternatively, allthe restaurants and barswill be open. The processions and enter-tainment start in mid afternoon and go onall night - have a good siesta beforehandand enjoy!

How To Enjoy A Fiesta1. The vast majority of things that happenduring a fiesta are free. So don't be afraidto just turn up and get involved. You couldsee processions of floats, get a plateful ofpaella or hear a local musician. You'll haveto pay for drinks most of the time, but that'susually it.2. Your local town or village fiesta is not tobe missed. This is your chance to beinvolved, enjoy the festivities and see yourbaker, butcher and barman let their hairdown. And make sure you go visiting yourneighbouring village fiestas too!3. Don't get drunk. Of course, enjoy a drinkor two (I know I do), but it's really bad formto get drunk. Drink in moderation andmake sure you have a little something toeat with each drink.4. Don't expect everything (or indeed any-thing) to start on time. If it starts within afew hours of the published timescale thenbe thankful! Listen out for the bangers(loud fireworks, not sausages!) that usual-ly indicate the start of an activity.5. Don't expect things to finish early - it'susual for weekend fiestas to go on till 4 or5am - so pace yourself, have a siestabefore you get started!

Health, Fitness & Mobility an easier way

Fitness, good health, energy and mobility are all things we takefor granted in our youth, but as time passes and the number onthe front of the birthday cards gets bigger, keeping fit becomesmuch more of a chore - miss a weeks training and it takes threeweeks to catch up.

If all you want is to stay agile and flexible, Toning Tables are agreat alternative to the gym.

The ‘SShhaappee && TToonnee’ centre in LosAlcazares have a full range of toningtables, operated by professional qualifiedstaff. Although a large number of theirclients use the tables to ‘wobble off’ extrainches, we managed to speak to two ladieswho go there for the health benefits.

Lee Monks is a 69 year old from Valle delSol. Lee has had Pagets disease of thespine since her teens, she also suffersfrom Spondalosis and was diagnosed withOsteo Arthritis in her late thirties and hadto walk with the aid of a stick.

Twice weekly sessions on the tables forthe last year have transformed her abilityto enjoy life to the full again. The stick hasgone, allowing her to actively enjoy a strollon the promenade when she likes, withoutthe pain, and she has noticed a vastimprovement in muscle tone and size. Thebiggest benefit of all, though, is theincrease in joint mobility.

The correct ‘Pilates’ breathing methodtaught to use whilst exercising can alsohelp Asthma sufferers. Lee has found thetables to be more beneficial to her thandrugs or even aquatherapy.

Caroline Foster is 58, and has a tendencytowards Osteo Arthritis, due to an accident40 years ago.

She has been using the tables for the last2 years, and although she admits they arenot a ‘cure-all’, they are a great aid tomaintaining a good level of fitness andmobility.

Cats exercise themselves,so they will suit an owner who maybecouldn't exercise a pet. Having a smallbaby around is also perhaps not the timeto think about getting a new cat. If youhave small children about the place,make sure you get a calm cat that does-n't mind being pulled about. That'swhere it may be a good idea to get anolder cat instead of a kitten.

Facilities available: Their small size andclean habits make them ideal pets forflat-dwellers. They can easily be trainedto use a litter tray. However, due to theirinquisitive nature they can knock overvaluable ornaments. They also need tocondition their claws, often using themost precious piece of furniture as ascratching post. Cats also have a tenden-cy to jump from heights. Make sure thatany balcony is enclosed, and upper level

windows are alwaysclosed when the cat is indoors. Cars arethe commonest cause of cat deaths, sothink about this if you live on a busymain road.

A cats needs: Time A cat will need less of your time than adog, being independent animals theyquite like to be left alone for most of thetime, but enjoy fuss at feeding and in theevening. This stroking and attention alsoreduces stress in the owner! Cats alsoneed routine 'maintenance' such asgrooming, dental care and feeding, aswell as play. Remember, a long-haired catwill need a lot more grooming than theirshort-haired cousins, so think carefullyabout the breed you finally decide to get.

If you feel you can't give a cat the time itneeds, think about getting two cats, theyare good company for each other.

Money: Cats cost you money as well astime, but on the whole will be cheaperthan a dog. Consider the 'one-off' items,such as buying the cat, beds, and collars,as well as the regular expenses such asfood.

Hi, and welcome to yet another edition of"Chefs Rant". With Easter just aroundthe corner I thought we would keep itsimple yet traditional, with a simpleEaster recipe that all the family can joinin and make together.

EASTER BISCUITS* 3 oz (85 g) sugar* 3 oz (85 g) butter* 1 egg yolk* 1½ oz (45g) currants (optional)* ½ teaspoon mixed spice* 6 oz (170 g) plain flour* Small amount of milk (if required)* A pinch of salt1. Cream together the sugar and butter.

2. Beat in the egg and add, a little at atime, the fruit (optional) and other dryingredients. Mix to a stiff dough, using alittle milk if necessary.

3. Roll out on a floured surface to about1/8 inch thickness. Prick all over (usingfork) Cut into rounds using a 4 inchround crinkly biscuit cutter (or the top ofa cup if no cutters are available).

4. Grease a baking tray Bake in a moder-ate over 400°F/Gas Mark 6 for about 20minutes until they are lightly coloured.

5. Take out of the oven and place on awire rack until cold and crisp.

This is a very simple recipe that takesaround 30 mins to prepare and cook,both the biscuit mix and biscuits can befrozen if required, so go on give it a goand let me know how you get on. Since many people are now starting to enjoy the warmer weather at the beach, mytopic this week is bird watching while sunbathing! I have chosen two birds whichyou should see while relaxing on a beach by the Mar Menor; Little Terns and CrestedLarks.

You will notice Little Terns flying over the water close tothe beach looking for fish. When they spot one, they willdive head first into the water to catch it. They are aboutthe size of a Starling, though have similar colouring to aseagull and nest by the edge ofthe sea in a shallow scoop on asand or shingle beach.

Since these birds nest on theground their young are very vulnerable and the birds arecurrently in decline due to them losing habitat to humans.

My second bird this week is the Crested Lark. You will see this bird on the sand run-ning (or hopping) around looking for food; they feed on insects, shoots and seeds.They are brown and speckled in colour and are well camouflaged on the sand, how-ever they are quite easy to spot and distinguish as they have a spiky crest on the topof their head (rather like a Punk Mohican). They are slightly larger than a Sparrow.

This week I have a bit of a problem for you. There is anotherLark which is very similar, that you may also see in the area.It is less common and it is very difficult to tell the two apart.Below I will describe the differencesbetween the Crested Lark and itscousin the Thekla Lark.

Thekla Larks are similar in appear-ance to Crested Larks, but with morepronounced markings on the throat, a

shorter straighter bill and the under-side of its wings are grey. In fact the entire colouring of thebird is greyer than the Crested Lark. Since the most obviousdifference between the two types of lark is on the undersideof their wings the best chance of telling the difference will bewhen they are flying and then of course they are much harder to see! Both of theseLarks are sedentary (do not migrate) you should therefore be able to see them allyear round.I hope you enjoy your time at the beach and manage to spot these birds as well.Lesley Singleton, Aqua Adicta

Brighten up your terrace for EasterBy Clodagh and Dick Handscombe

Many readers who are not full time resi-dents of Spain are no doubt visiting theirapartments for a week or two at Easterto enjoy the hopefully sunny springweather, but in many cases not thespring flowers. Whenever we walk byapartment blocks we find it disappoint-ing that many owners of apartments -both resident and non resident - alongthe Mediterranean coastlines do notensure that their apartment block looklike the proverbial hanging gardens ofBabylon or nearer at home the colourfulPyrenean or French and Swiss moun-tain villages. In such locations as soon asthe snow melts almost every balcony andapartment terrace wall or railings areplanted up with window boxes andtroughs of spring and summer plants ina myriad of colours. Unfortunately Spaindoes not have the tradition of prizes forthe most colourful resorts, villages andtowns that exist in many more northerlyEuropean countries.But some five to ten percent of terracesare developed as mini gardens and thebest are amazingly colourful and produc-tive. Not only do they have colourful win-dow boxes with seasonal displays butalso containers with climbing plantstrained up the walls - even ceilings insome cases - and containers/troughs ofproductive tomato pepper and come andcome again salad plants. Some in addi-tion to a mini vegetable garden also have

a mini orchard with a few fruit trees inpots and a strawberry barrel or straw-berries planted up in three plastictroughs strung one above the other onrope. Such a set up is also great for a col-lection of culinary herbs that add per-fume to the terrace as well as enhancingsalads and cooked dishes.So why not make 2009 the year when theMar Menor area becomes both beautifuland productive, and what better time tostart this off than at Easter when sum-mer annuals and vegetable plantlets arestarting to be available. Unfortunatelywe can't include long lists of plants etc ina short monthly article but there is plen-ty of advice in our books to help apart-ment owners. For instance 'Your Garden in Spain'includes suggestions for practical plantsfor east, west, south and north facingterraces and the next Chapter is dedicat-ed to Windy Penthouses. Part Two ofboth 'Growing Healthy Vegetables inSpain' and 'Growing Healthy Fruit inSpain' show what can be grown in lessthan one square metre! What can be bet-ter than enjoying a gin and tonic on yourfirst evening back in Spain with a slice oflemon from a your own home grown per-petually fruiting Lunar lemon tree,grown in a container that a friendlyneighbour waters for you during yourabsence.

Suddenly the brunetteyells, "earthquake!!"Everyone is startled andlooks around. She man-ages to escape.

The angry guards thenbring the redhead for-ward, and the execution-er asks if she has any lastrequests. She says no,and the executionershouts, "Ready . . Aim . ."

The redhead thenscreams, "tornado!!" Yetagain, everyone is star-tled and looks around.She too escapes execu-tion.

By this point, the blondehad figured out what theothers did. The guardsbring her forward, andthe executioner asks ifshe has any last requests.She also says no, and theexecutioner shouts,Ready . . . Aim . . ."

The blonde shouts, "fire!!"
