Our famous face on the cover of this month’s edition isEdward Gillespie, Managing Director of CheltenhamRacecourse. Edward has been in charge at Cheltenhamfor more than 30 years, which is a remarkable feat, andhe seems as full of enthusiasm as he was when taking overthe role as a fresh faced 27 year old.Over a period of 30 years, a sporting event in March will
inevitably face challenges – mainly from the British climate– but the man in charge runs things with the calmconfidence of someone who is comfortable that he canhandle whatever comes his way, not least because he hascomplete faith in the talented team that he has assembledalongside him.It probably hasn’t escaped your attention that The Festival
is just around the corner this year, with the fun and gamestaking place from Tuesday 13th to Friday 16th March. Ticketsales have apparently been going extremely well, but therewill be tickets available on the day for Tuesday, Wednesdayand Thursday. However, if you are planning to attend onGold Cup Day, you’ll need to book in advance – go towww.cheltenham.co.uk for all the information.
2011 Gold Cup winner Long Run with triumphant Jockey SamWaley-Cohen (the first amateur to win for 30 years). Long Runis owned by Sam’s father RobertWaley-Cohen, who is now alsoChairman of Cheltenham Racecourse!

What is a ‘March Hare’ and why is he mad? Thephrase is to do with the behaviour of BritishHares. It behaves strangely at the beginning of its
long breeding season which lasts from Februaryto September. The behaviour includes boxingwith other hares, jumping vertically for no reasonor just displaying abnormal behaviour. It used to be thought that the boxing hares
were males fighting for supremacy, but now weknow it is the defensive moves of the femalesfighting off the advances of over eager, highspirited admirers early in the season – March!A famous March Hare is a character from
Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonder-land. Alice says: “The March Hare will be muchthe most interesting, and perhaps as this is May,it won’t be raving mad – at least not so mad asit was in March”.The Hare wears straw on his head too – a
common way to depict madness in victoriantimes!

Sue felt unhappy with her fitness levels, so she knew she should do something about it.
So she joined the hundreds of women in Cheltenham who have
finally found the secret to slimming down and staying that way – with no treadmill or faddy eating plan in sight.
Located on Gloucester Road, Ladyzone is based on a 30-minute circuit workout, which takes place in a light and airy exercise room
combining nutritional
consultations, fitness programmes and lifestyle coaching. A free slimming club and weight management plan is included in the membership and for many users, it is the first time they have used a gym.
Sue said:“I decided to have a look around and immediately felt at ease, and knew it would fit in easily with my lifestyle as a 30-minute workout three times a week is enough to see results.
The equipment is really easy to use and you don’t have to spend time queuing, because people continuously move around the circuit.
I also joined Slimzone, the slimming group you have access to as part of your membership and combined with my workouts, I achieved my target of losing over 1.5 stone. I’ve now been a member for over two years because the manager Rebecca and her team are really friendly and make exercising such an enjoyable experience”
Make this the month you lose weight & feel great for good

Gloucestershire Airport is jointly owned byGloucester City Council and Cheltenham BoroughCouncil who, between them, purchased thecompany in 1936. Today Airport Director Mark Ryan is supported
by three representatives of each council (servingas non-executive board members) and JeremyHilton – a Liberal Democrat member ofGloucester City Council for the last 16 years – ischairman of the board. The airport is a great transport and commercial
asset to the county and Jeremy (pictured rightabove with Mark Ryan) is very proud to serve onthe board. He kindly explained the ‘structure’ ofthe site and some of the developmental workdesigned to constantly improve the servicesavailable:“With an annual turnover of £4m and around
85,000 movements a year, the 50 staff working atthe airport do a great job in keeping Stavertonworking like clockwork. On top of this there are40 aviation-related firms employing 550 peoplebased on the airfield.“The company also manages the Meteor
Business Park located on the northern perimeterof the airport, which is fully occupied, providingjobs for 2,500 people.“Building works have now been completed,
making safety improvements to the main runway,
where houses at both ends have now beendemolished and rebuilt along with the constructionof a new Runway End Safety Area and airportentrance road. The £3.9m Runway Safety Projectwill improve the landing distance on the mainrunway and secure the airport’s Code 2 status.“The new instrument landing system should be
operational by the summer enabling aircraft to landin bad weather and making full use of theenhanced main runway. Board members areconfident that the improved landing distances willencourage new business aircraft to operate fromthe airport and enable them to carry greaterpayloads.“Passenger flights to the Isle of Man and Belfast
are operated by Manx2.com up to three times perday. The airport provides a speedy, 20-minutecheck in and free customer car parking.Manx2.com also operates twice-weekly flights toJersey between May and October.“The airport is currently home to around 160
aircraft, including around a dozen business jets. Itis expected that, with the improved main runway, new aircraft will be based at GloucestershireAirport and work is already underway refurbishingthe largest hangar.”Why not visit the airport’s website to find out
more about the great services they provide –www.gloucestershireairport.co.uk
Safety and service paramountat Gloucestershire Airport
Gloucestershire Airport is the heart of an importantheritage centre for British aviation. HH Martyn firstproduced military aircraft in nearby Cheltenham Spaduring the First World War. In 1917 his company becamethe Gloucestershire Aircraft Company Ltd. This was soonrelocated to Brockworth and its name shortened toGloster. Gloster manufactured many legendary aircraft, including the Gladiator, the Whittle-engined E28 (thefirst jet aircraft to fly in Britain), the Meteor jet fighterand the delta wing Javelin all weather fighter. A rare andfine example of the Javelin is on display at the airport.Sir George Dowty developed his unique internally
sprung wheel at Gloucestershie Airport, which was fittedto the Gloster Gladiator. Over 70 years later, MessierDowty and Dowty Rotol, the descendants of his famouscompany, are still at the airport, building landing gearand propellers for world markets. The Skyfame Museum was founded at the airport in
1963. This was one of the first museums in Britain todedicate itself to the preservation of Second World Waraircraft. In many cases, it saved unique aircraft otherwisedestined for fire practice. Cheltenham is also thebirthplace of such figures as Sir Frederick Handley Pageand Sir Arthur (Bomber) Harris. In recognition of this heritage, the Airport has donated
a plot of land to the Jet Age Museum, who have planningpermission to build a museum, dedicated to thepreservation of Gloucestershire’s aviation history. It ishoped that work will begin in May on the construction ofa building to house their collection of rare Gloster aircraftand aeronautica. Visit www.jetagemuseum.org for moredetails.

Now is a good time to trim ornamental grasses.Evergreen grasses like Festuca glauca or Pampas Grassare pruned annually in early spring. The small ones likethe Festuca just need their tipstrimmed to remove dead bitswhilst the large Pampas can becut hard back to the base, anddead material raked out to letlight and air into the plantcentre. You will need stronggloves for this as the leavesare razor sharp! Deciduousgrasses like Miscanthus andStipa can be cut down toabout 10cm now to get rid ofthe old brown stems andallow the new green growth to take over. Trim winter-flowering heathers with shears as they stop flowering tokeep them compact.
Now – time to talk vegetables! Try and be realisticabout how many varieties of vegetables you wish togrow this season. Easier said than done – we have allbeen there, reading the seed catalogues and finding ourlist growing ever longer. Then planting packets of seedsand pricking out hundreds of tiny plantlets, trying to foistthe leftovers on neighbours and friends who probablyhave their own problems to contend with! If you haven’ttried growing anything before start small. First thing tothink of is do you actually like the said vegetable? Nowthis may seem ridiculous but believe me people do growthings that no one in their family actually eat and so thisis a waste of time.
Things for beginners to grow would be runner beans, courgettes, cherry tomatoes, and cut and come againlettuces. Then don’t plant a whole packet! The lettucecan be sowed in small short rows every couple of weeksso you get a succession ofplants to pick over. No oneneeds 10 courgette plantsunless they are running arestaurant – 2 or 3 are ampleand really, one is just fine ifspace is limited. The runnerbeans can be made into awigwam and 5 or 6 plantsare enough for this (sow 2beans per pot and nip off theweaker one to ensure goodgermination). The cherry tomatoes are simple as theydon’t need any special training and are happy as long asthey have enough water and some tomato feed whenthey start to flower. The last thing to say on this subjectis make sure you harvest your veg and use it! This doessometimes happen – it is akin to joining a gym and feelingbetter for it and never actually going!

What’s HOT in ‘Buy to Let’Buy to let is something that people are investing in rightnow, with house prices being quite low at present, it is agood time for people to invest their cash.
However knowing which areasto invest in is a minefield initself and when you’ve decidedthat, the next question is ... doyou go for an apartment asthere are more single men andwomen living alone than inprevious decades or do you go forthe 2 bedroomed semi as more andmore people work from home andneed a home office. It’s a little bitlike comparing apples and pears.Apart from the obvious budget thatyou are working with, research iswhat is needed and the best thingfor you to do is talk to Agents in the local area, find outhow many Landlord portfolios they look after, how longdoes it take them on average to rent out a property andwhich type of property in which areas rent out the quickest. They seem like very simple questions but sometimes it’sthe simple questions that don’t get asked that really shouldhelp you decide where and what to buy.So, if you were thinking of taking the plunge and putting
some money into property you really need to startresearching. The more favourable properties that rent outquickly in Cheltenham are 2 and 3 bed semi detachedhouses. The good news for any investor looking in theCheltenham area for that type of property is there are over150 to choose from. For future resale a 2/3 bedroomhouse is probably going to be more achievable than anapartment or larger detached house. So the next question is, where in Cheltenham is a good
place to buy to let? Well there are a few hot spots whichinclude Fairview, Charlton Kings, Leckhampton andBishops Cleeve to name but a few. A reputable Agent willbe able to advise you further on the current Cheltenhammarket place.

A new tyre business has opened up on the Churchill Roadestate just off Mead Road in Leckhampton, Cheltenham. ‘GetGrip’ is run by 27-year-old Richard Cooper and his right handman Jenek.Originally from Devon, Richard worked for a tyre company
upon leaving school before trying his hand in sales and retailroles. The opportunity then arose for him to return to the tyreindustry with the help of Jenek who has been in the job forover 10 years.Get Grip’s location is ideal. Even if you don’t live nearby,
the Churchill Road site is very easy to find and you can drivestraight into the workshop. They can supply an extensive rangeof tyres including an ‘on demand’ service for new tyres fromall the major brands and budget tyres if required. Specificgrades for commercial, summer and winter motoring are alsoavailable. However, Richard’s speciality is ‘part worn tyres’ – brilliant
for the environment and extremely cost-effective for hiscustomers (they start at only £9!). And you needn’t worryabout the quality of your purchase – tyres undergo testingprocedures by the dealerships before being thoroughlyexamined by Richard and Jenek. Once fitted, they receive athird ‘pressure’ check to ensure they are 100% safe for use.Richard is aware that some people will still have concerns
over changing bald or damaged tyres with part wornreplacements. He explains: “It’s all about confidence for thecustomer, and we do everything possible to 100% guaranteethe same quality as any of the new tyres we fit. Anyone buyinga second-hand vehicle will, inevitably, be driving on used tyres.”The monetary saving for the customer is clear. Richard says:
“New tyres come with 8mm of surface tread while our partworn tyres average 4mm and a minimum of 3mm. Typicallyyou can pay a similar price to have four part worn tyres fitted
(about £25 each) as you would for one brand new mouldcosting £100.”Get Grip will also repair any type of tyre from just £10 and
all fitting and balancing is dealt with on site. They are open from9.30am-6pm Monday to Friday and 9am-2pm on Saturdays. It is best to call in advance to save you waiting around, butRichard welcomes anyone just calling in. More details can befound on the website – www.getgrip.co.uk.Why not save yourself money and support this new local
business next time your tyres need changing or repairing –you’ll be helping the environment too!

Days of ActionAnd the weeks seem tofly by. The Robins keepwinning, we have caughtmore burglars and theHigh Street ‘day of action’was a fantasidoby eventaccording to one elderlylady! On a personal levelI did my own ‘FannyCraddock’ bit with aselection of refreshmentsfor the hard workers onour ‘day of action’.
The ‘day of action’consisted of getting as many officers into the LowerHigh street as possible from early morning until lateevening. We carried out a series of warrants and highprofile patrols to increase confidence and try to reduceharm for our community. We arrested 6 people, recovered a large quantity of cannabis, warned lots ofpeople about littering etc and carried out plenty ofcommunity work. The ‘tent’ was erected in Ambrosestreet and we spoke to many local people about allaspects of our role and how we could help them.
Lots of crime prevention advice was given includingwarning people about identity theft and how to carryout simple procedures such as shredding before puttingpaperwork in the bin. The local authority and otheragencies came along and were a great help. We areplanning more of these multi-agency days as they arewell received and all parties seem to enjoy them.
Today I have been speaking to the mounted officersfrom Avon & Somerset Constabulary who are comingup to Cheltenham to help with the races. I will also beout on all those 4 evenings, trying to keep people safefrom harm and hoping they have a great time. We willalso be putting out plenty of crime prevention advicesuch as keeping your wallets and purses safe (bulgingwith cash hopefully) and making sure that taxis arebona fide and lawful. This is another area where wework very closely with the local authority foreveryone’s safety and confidence.
I feel a bit like Ronnie Corbett when I write thesearticles as I just write as I recall the months work andwhat is currently happening, but hopefully it makessome sort of sense and gives a small snapshot intoyour local policing team. I will leave you to yourbusiness now as I speak to my team about an earlystart tomorrow morning when we are waking up alocal drug dealer with a big red key (also known as abattering ram) which should hopefully spoil his day.
Bye for now and keep locking your doors!
