Maps – Maroon 5

I miss the taste of a sweeter life I miss the conversation

I’m searching for a song tonight I’m changing all of the stations

I like to think that we had it all

We drew a map to a better place But on that road I took a fall

Oh baby why did you run away?

I was there for you In your darkest times

I was there for you In your darkest nights

But I wonder where were you?

When I was at my worst Down on my knees

And you said you had my back So I wonder where were you?

When all the roads you took came back to me

So I’m following the map that leads to you The map that leads to you

Ain't nothing I can do The map that leads to you

Following, following, following to you The map that leads to you

Ain't nothing I can do The map that leads to you

Following, following, following

I hear your voice in my sleep at night Hard to resist temptation

'Cause something strange has come over me And now I can’t get over you No, I just can’t get over you

I was there for you

In your darkest times I was there for you

In your darkest nights

But I wonder where were you? When I was at my worst

Down on my knees And you said you had my back So I wonder where were you?

When all the roads you took came back to me

Commented [ZR1]: The protagonist of the video obviously has some regrets that he is feeling, possibly towards how he has behaved. He does not know what he has lost until he has made the mistake and it has been taken away from him.

Commented [ZR2]: The reference to him “changing all the stations” signifies his attempt to revert his behaviour and mend the failed relationship.

Commented [ZR3]: The protagonist is referring back to when he and his partner were in ‘happier times.’ It is a metaphorical reference to how they are attempting to lay the foundations of their relationship down.

Commented [ZR4]: The protagonist is wondering why she left him – at the beginning of the video she is seen lying on the hospital table. This could be him questioning why she had to die?

Commented [ZR5]: From the man’s POV. He is saying that he has always been there for her when she has needed him to be there

Commented [ZR6]: He is questioning why she was never here for him after all the support he has given to her – she has left him by himself

Commented [ZR7]: A cry for help – feeling lost.

Commented [ZR8]: Signifying the idea that she took any excuse she could to stay away from him even though there were plenty of opportunities

Commented [ZR9]: He is trying to find her, however has left him behind and he wants to be with her

Commented [ZR10]: He is feeling lost and alone as there is nobody there for him and he doesn’t know what to do to fix the mistakes that he has made.

Commented [ZR11]: The repetition signifies his desperation to be with her

Commented [ZR12]: Hearing voices suggests that he is dreaming of happier times with her before she died

Commented [ZR13]: He feels that no matter how hard he has tried to get over her after she has died there is nobody who will be able to live up to her

Commented [ZR14]: By him saying that he has always been there for her, he feels that because she has left him, she has neglected him

Commented [ZR15]: Possible suggestion that she died at night?

Commented [ZR16]: He is questioning why she was never here for him after all the support he has given to her – she has left him by himself

Commented [ZR17]: When she died, he obviously hit a low and needed her there to pick him back up

Commented [ZR18]: He needed her there to pick him back up off the floor

So I’m following the map that leads to you The map that leads to you

Ain't nothing I can do The map that leads to you

Following, following, following to you The map that leads to you

Ain't nothing I can do The map that leads to you

Oh oh oh Oh oh oh

Yeah yeah yeah Oh oh oh

Oh, I was there for you

Oh, in your darkest time Oh, I was there for you

Oh, in your darkest nights

Oh, I was there for you Oh, in your darkest time Oh, I was there for you

Oh, in your darkest nights

But I wonder where were you? When I was at my worst

Down on my knees And you said you had my back So I wonder where were you?

When all the roads you took came back to me

So I’m following the map that leads to you The map that leads to you

Ain't nothing I can do The map that leads to you

Following, following, following to you The map that leads to you

Ain't nothing I can do The map that leads to you

Following, following, following

Commented [ZR19]: The repetition of the word following in the song comes across as him being quite possessive – however, I believe that he is just desperate to be in the same place as she is

Commented [ZR20]: Confusion and desperation

Commented [ZR21]: The repetition of the hook is a reminder to the listener that he feels that he has been let down by his girlfriend because she has left him behind

Commented [ZR22]: Desperation to find her – suggesting that possibly he wants to die also just so they can be together
