On the heels of last week’s announce- ment that Harbour Air is cancelling its services between Langley Regional Airport and Victoria, Whistler Air is expanding its service, president Mike Quinn said Sunday. Harbour Air announced late last week that, after four years, it’s cancelling its daily flights between the Langley Regional Airport and Victoria effective May 20. “It comes with great sadness that we announce the cancellation of this service,” said Randy Wright, senior vice-president at Harbour Air. “Our numerous attempts at generating a sustainable market for this route have proven to be unsuccessful. A decrease in passenger numbers over the years combined with an increase in fuel and operating costs have led to this difficult decision.” But while it’s bad news for the Langley operation, it’s good news for Pitt Meadows. “Pitt Meadows Regional Airport is ideally suited to service the needs of these areas” said airport manager Glenn Ralph. “With the new Golden Ears Bridge two kilometres from the airport, we are min- utes from anywhere in the Fraser Valley.” The new service to Victoria will begin the same day the existing Langley service ends, under the banner of the Georgia Strait Connector (a division of Whistler Air), Quinn elaborated. Flights between Pitt Meadows and Victoria will cost $146, which Quinn said is the same price for flights on Harbour Air and West Coast Air between Vancouver and Victoria. Passengers then wanting to travel on to other destinations such as Nainmo will be able to do that “seamlessly,” said Quinn. There will be a morning flight each day from Pitt Meadows to Victoria at 7:30 a.m., and from Victoria to Pitt Meadows at 8:20 a.m. Plus, in the afternoon, it runs in reverse, leaving Victoria at 5:30 p.m., and Pitt Meadows at 4:30 p.m. “We want to get traffic both ways,” said Quinn, noting there are three planes avail- able – one taking 12 people, one taking nine, and the other up to six. Quinn is hopeful this move will increase tourism between the two cities. But it’s intended to do more than pick up the slack left behind by Harbour Air’s cancellation. Quinn expects commuters might even opt for this service – instead of driving into Vancouver. “People from Coquitlam, Surrey, and the Fraser Valley will no longer have to travel to the downtown float plane base to access these destinations,” he said. “Residents from these regions can also avoid the hour- long commute to down- town every day by using our affordable 10-minutes express service. With three flights in the morning and three return flights in the afternoon, we will effectively be taking 25 cars off of the road every day.” However, if people actually use this ser- vice as a means to commute is the ques- tion, said Quinn. “I guess I’ll find out,” he added. “I can’t imagine people doing it all the time,” he admitted. “But, what’s your time worth?” Each flight between Pitt Meadows and Vancouver will be $24. He’s also expecting some passengers will use the new service to leapfrog from the Vancouver or Victoria harbours to another destination, possibly connecting with flights to Nanaimo, Comox, Sechelt, the Gulf Islands, Tofino, and Whistler. There is also talk of a frequent-flyer pro- gram being implemented to reward those who use the service on a regular basis. A Maple Ridge woman isstruggling to find the $1,500needed to amputate Elmo’sright leg after it was bitten bya pit bull two months ago.

by Amy [email protected]

Elmo’s leg drags on the groundwhen he walks. As he shufflesalong the floor, his right frontleg almost trailing behind him,he can’t feel it, but now soreshave started to open on the topof his paw where it comes intocontact with the ground.

“I don’t know what to do,I am lost,” said owner ShellyBalson.

About two months ago, Balsonwas walking Elmo in their com-plex when she said a pit bull, offits leash, came up them.

The dogs sniffed each other. Then the pit bull grabbed Elmo’sleg and wouldn’t let go.

Elmo’s muscle was torn fromthe bone, and after one $800 vetbill, it will now cost $1,500 toremove the leg – that’s the onlyoption besides euthanasia.

“The dog is loose in the com-plex,” said Balson, referring tothe pit bull. “The manager has

warned [the resident]. The SPCAhas been to her house twice.”

The SPCA does investigatematters such as this one, andinterview both parties involved. They may issue a warning, ordetermine if a dog is dangerous, and then certain rules apply tokeep the dog under control. Thiswill mean it must be kept either

indoors, or “within a fencedyard in an enclosure at least six-feet in height, six-feet in lengthand four-feet in width,” accord-ing to the District of Maple Ridgebylaws.

As the incident happened onprivate property, the strata rulesalso apply, although all dogsin Maple Ridge should be on a

leash unless they are in an off-leash area.

Balson said she took a peti-tion round in the complex, andeverybody signed it, and shesaid management sent arounda letter saying all dogs have tobe on a leash, but none of thathelps her situation now.

“I have no idea how I’m goingto come up with [the money],”she said.

“I almost put him down onSunday,” she said, tears wellingup in her eyes, “but I love himso much.”

Balson has taken Elmo to theAlouette Animal Hospital, andshe said she is so pleased withtheir level of care. They havealso offered to help cover someof the cost of the operationthrough their Jackson Fund.

Elmo is a Labrador-shepherdcross, and Balson has had himfor six years. She lives with hercousin Chris Stevens, and heis also trying to get the moneytogether, but time is runningout.

“The faster we can get it done, the better it will be for [Elmo],”said Stevens.

“If you put him down it’s only$300, but I know there will betimes when I come home andcall him and he won’t be there,”he added.

“That’s what kills me.”

Proposed budget savings should berevealed later this week.by Maria [email protected]

A Grade 6-7 band program is pos-sibly facing cuts as the school districtgrapples to find $2.2 million in savingsto balance its budget.

While no decision has yet been madeon this proposed cut to the MapleRidge-Pitt Meadows school districtbudget, parents have been lobbying theboard of education to keep the bandteacher’s position so their kids don’thave to go to the high schools for thissubject.

Instead of Grade 6 and 7 studentsdoing band in the elementary schools, the suggestion has been to have themintegrated into the high school bandprograms in order to save $110,000.

Rhyly Bell was in the elementary band

program and said this is the reason shecontinued in band at high school.

She is currently in Grade 8 at MapleRidge Secondary and continues playingclarinet with the school’s program.

“I would actually have been terrified[to play at the high school],” Rhylysaid.

It was important to her to start bandin elementary school, to learn theinstrument properly.

She has learned to love playing herclarinet in band and the music they’redoing.

“Why are arts the first thing to go?”her mother Corisa Bell said. “I’d like toknow what other cuts [are happening]within the district.”

District superintendent Jan Unwinsaid in an “ideal world,” the arts pro-grams would be taught by teacher-spe-cialists who could teach arts program-ming during the time classroom teach-ers have for preparation.

Downtown merchantswant more customersthrough their doors.by Maria [email protected]

Maple Ridge councilgave the head of the busi-ness improvement societya “very positive” responseon Monday.

The first businessimprovement association(BIA) to exist in MapleRidge will end its first five-year mandate at the endof this year, and executivedirector Ineke Boekhorstsaid she is looking for-ward to the “challenge” ofanother five years.

“We’ve accomplishedquite a bit,” she said.

“Our downtown certainly

looks wonderful now.”The proposal to con-

tinue the BIA for anotherfive years was welcomedat Maple Ridge council’sMonday mor-ning workshop, and the motionmoves to firstreading at afuture councilmeeting.

Businesses payon average ofbetween $150 to$200 a year tothe DowntownMaple Ridge BIA.

Boekhorst saida recent surveywhere 10 per cent of their1,000 members respondedwas 100 per cent in favourof continuing as a BIA.

Safety of the downtownarea was a top priority inthe first five years.

The next five will seea closer alignment of theBIA’s goals with those ofthe District’s strategic plan, and marketing and bring-

ing more cus-tomers to localbusinesses willbe the primaryfocus.

“We’ve founda lot of localpeople haven’teven exploreddowntown,”Boekhorst said.

The BIA willalso focus onbringing inpeople from

outside the community,Boekhorst said.

This will be done in con-junction with the chamberof commerce, the tourismoffice, and the economicdevelopment office.

The biggest challengein its first four and a halfyears has been gettingmembers involved in theassociation.

“It’s hard to reach every-one and get everyoneinvolved,” Boekhorst said.

If they get a new five-year mandate, the area willbe expanded to includebusinesses on LougheedHighway up to 116thAvenue, which is east ofthe current boundary of228th Street.

Residents living near GoldenEars Bridge attended ameeting in Pitt last week.by Amy [email protected]

Golden Ears Bridge will befirst in North America to try anew application that will helpto dull down the noise levels onthe bridge for residents livingnearby.

However, TransLink spokes-person Ken Hardie said they arenot concerned that not only dothey not have a plan B – if thisdoesn’t work – but that it hasnot been tried on a bridge inNorth America before.

“We’re going to move forwardon the bast of this solution, which we did test at UBC,” hesaid. “We’re really quite con-fident that we can get a six- toeight-decibel decrease.”

He added that TransLink gotthe idea from a company thathas had success with it in China.

About 25 residents who

live near the bridge attendeda meeting in Pitt Meadowslast Wednesday night to hearTransLink’s solution to the prob-lem, and resident Mike Stark saidif this method does decrease thenoise by that much, then he willbe happy.

“Compared to what it wasbefore, it is a din,” he said, ofthe traffic travelling over thenoisy bridge deck. “There arepeople that can’t have their win-dows open.”

TransLink has decided to placea filler into the cavity of theexpansion joints on the bridge, and then neoprene strips will beput in between the ribs.

“We’ve ordered up the materi-als,” said Hardie, but they arewaiting for warmer weather,as a few days of no rain and atleast 10 degrees is needed for theadhesive to work.

“We’re working with 3M[adhesives] on a glue that willhold [the neoprene strips] inplace properly,” he added.

“But technical and weatherissues [are] combining to delaythe installation of this.”

Hardie said that the intentionis to do all of the expansionjoints on the north side of thebridge, and in the main span, along with some on the south.

Aside from the noise ofvehicles going over the bridge,Hardie said residents alsoexpressed concern about peopledriving too fast over the bridgeand causing noise, and the levelof the sound wall alongside thebridge not being high enough.

“We have and continue tospeak with the Ridge MeadowsRCMP, and the Langley RCMPfor speed enforcement,” saidHardie.

He said signs could also beerected asking truckers not touse engine breaks unless neces-sary, and to appeal to drivers toslow down as the noise level is anuisance to the neighbours.

“One of the things we mighthave to look at is raising thewall,” said Hardie, or puttingmore vegetation between thebridge and the residential area.

Stark expressed concern aboutthe level of the current soundwall. “It’s a 10-foot wall, and

14.5-foot trucks,” he said.He added that the lack of a

barrier down by the roundabouton Hammond Road wasn’t evenaddressed at the meeting, andwhile he felt hopeful about thefix for the bridge noise, he didn’tfor the wall.

“They’ve ignored it until now,and they might ignore it again,”he said.

Hardie said he could tell resi-dents are anxious for a fix, andhe understands their frustration.

“The residents certainly appre-ciate the complexity of trying todo this,” he said.

“Hopefully this will be a fix,”

said Stark. “We just want a fix,it’s been going on far too long.”

In a report released last Friday, the regional transit authorityreported a $16-million budgetsurplus for 2010, citing theOlympics and increased ridershipas reasons behind the amount.

“We had forecast about an $84-million deficit which we wouldhave drawn out of reserves andinstead we will be putting about$16 million back into reserves,”said Hardie.

Those savings helped offsetlower tolls on the Golden EarsBridge by 30 per cent during off-peak hours.

OpinionOur View

Small stepa good onefor parks

It was in August of 2006 whenwe first tore a strip off the provincialLiberals for their ongoing policy of turn-ing provincial parks into revenue produ-cing factories.

“What is it about the “public” part in“public parks” that the B.C. Liberal gov-ernment just doesn’t get?” we asked.

We railed against them for a virtualanti-park campaign since taking officein 2001.

At that time they had already putparking meters in the parks, cut parkinterpretive programs, and hiked camp-ground fees so much that it was verynearly just as cheap to stay in a hotel.

They had also tried, unsuccessfully,to pave a chunk of Cathedral Grove onVancouver Island. Their logic ran some-thing like this: “We want to cut downsome big trees so people can park theircars to go see big trees.”

And then they issued a call for pro-posals to build lodges and helipads inwilderness areas like Golden Ears, andWells Gray parks.

To that we said: “And now the B.C.government wants to put high-end lodg-es in our public parks so the rich canenjoy B.C.’s wilderness but without thewilderness experience of mosquitoes, lumpy sleeping pads and campfire cin-ders in your coffee.”

So, while it is indeed a smallstep back – Premier Christy Clark’sannouncement this past week that payparking will be removed from provincialparks is very welcome.

Clark acknowledged that the parkingfees were wrong and stopped peoplefrom using the parks.

Will she revisit the whole idea ofpublic parks as a revenue source?

We don’t know. But we do know that her acknow-

ledgement and correction of a long-standing policy gives us some hope thatshe may understand that public parksare for the enjoyment of the public, notjust for those who can afford the experi-ence.

And, perhaps, it is the first step in amuch more rational view of our super, natural outdoors in B.C.

Q. How many Rotarians does ittake to change a light bulb in anorphanage in Mexico?

A. About 1.2 million… becausewe’re all in this together.

So starts a series of clever rid-dles I put together (did you thinkI would have thought the ideaclever if it had come from some-one else?) for a presentation I didat my Rotary club – the RotaryClub of Langley Central – a fewyears ago.

Over the years, I’ve used theriddles in short series highlighting some of thetremendous work that Rotary does in the com-munity and throughout the world, and focusingon the cooperation between Rotarians and Rotaryclubs everywhere to achieve their humanitariangoals.

Each riddle hits on a Rotary project – like PolioPlus, which has nearly but not quite yet eradi-cated polio from the world, or fighting malariawith mosquito nets in places like Malawi, orproviding water to rural villages in Tanzania andelsewhere, or bringing library books and literacyto countries like Guatamala, or building and sup-plying orphanages, medical clinics, and schoolsall over the developing world, or… well, the listgoes on and on and on and…

The answer to each riddle in the series is thesame: a reference to the 1.2 million people whohave chosen Rotary as an avenue of servinghumanity together throughout the world.

Except the last question is always, “How manyRotarians does it take to change the world?”

And the answer always is, “Just one… becausewe’re all in this together.”

Last weekend, Rotary International District#5050 – which comprises a few dozen Rotaryclubs from the Fraser Valley up to Hope andacross the border down into Washington State– held its annual conference, a grand affair thatcelebrates Rotary, Rotarians, and their combinedgoals and achievements.

Every time I go to one of these things I am

amazed anew by what a bunchof volunteers with common goalscan achieve by working together.

And it’s even more impressiveto realize how much can be donewhen those volunteers are part ofa network that spans continents.

Take that whole Polio Plusthing I mentioned earlier.Working with UNICEF and a hostof disparate governments andothers around the world, Rotaryhas taken a leadership role in thedrive to eradicate the crippling

disease, in much the same fashion (although themechanism is somewhat more complicated) thatsmall pox was completely eradicated a few dec-ades ago.

Rotarians have donated hundreds of millions ofdollars and uncountable hours of volunteer time(including human and diplomatic connections ofincalculable value) to drive polio from a menacethat destroyed millions of lives throughout theworld to one that remains as a rump in just ahandful of places.

The danger is that, if the world-wide vaccina-tion effort were to stall in just one country beforethe bug is completely destroyed, the ravagesof polio could – and would – return to being aglobal threat again.

Mostly human stumbling blocks have gotin the way of achieving the goal of total polioeradication by 2005, set when the effort was firstlaunched by Rotary in the mid-1980s.

But for the past few years, we’ve been “Thisclose” to getting there – and that’s the focus ofa clever and important advertising campaign(which I think you have to agree is clever andimportant, even if I didn’t think of it myself) thatyou’ll soon start noticing, as Rotary hopes tolead the world in a final drive to push polio outof existence.

It’s an opportunity for every individual oneof us – whether or not you are a Rotarian (or aLion or a Kiwanian or whatever) – to change theworld.

Dear Editor,Hi, my name is Bella. I am a miniature

poodle and admit to being a tad anxious.I have had a few large dogs lunge at me

and I am quite terrified on walks. My owner tries to be calm, cool, and

collected when we go walking. But shedoes get a tad nervous, as well, when wesee large dogs off leash because of pastexperience.

Here is my request to all fellow dogs.

Please ask your owners to have youon a leash, even if you are on your ownfront yard.

Your owners always yell out that youare “safe and friendly” but here is whathappened recently that you and yourowners need to consider.

I was walking innocently with myowner. Two dogs were off leash in theirfront yard. They came bounding towardsme and their owner yelled out... “Don’tworry, they’re okay!”

Well I panicked, barking to save mylife.

My owner tugged me behind her toprotect me, which caused me a little moreanxiety (she’s no dog whisperer).

The “friendly” dogs were threatened bymy barking (makes me feel kind of good, considering I am less than half their size).

One of the dogs bared its teeth andlunged at me trying to bite my tiny body, the other raced around me.

My owner screamed and yanked meto safety and this continued for whatseemed like forever.

The other dog owner picked me up tokindly protect me from his dogs, but Iwas extremely annoyed at this point, so Ichomped down hard on his hand.

So much for a leisurely Sunday stroll. Please convince your owners that

even though you may be a “friendly”dog, when you see me in defence mode– regardless of my size – it gets your backup too and then things get ugly.

You need to be leashed up, even if youare relaxing in your own front yard.

Malls, jobs neededDear Editor,

Sharon Russell’s description [Say‘no’ to malls, April 19 Letters, TIMES]if more malls are built, “cars drivenslowly, dense traffic, toxic exhaust, etc.” could be used to paint the pictureof the morning exodus from MapleRidge for commuters to reach theirjobs.

The reverse happens in the evening. There’s a backup at least from 203rd

Street on the Lougheed Highway toHarris Road in Pitt Meadows.

If there is a lot more new businessdevelopment, people could workwhere they live and lot of those carswould not be polluting in comparisonto shopping trips.

Those morning commuters areshopping as well, so it’s a doublewhammy.

Health care

Unbiased systemreview is criticalDear Editor,

New Democrat Elizabeth Rosenau perpetuates twomyths about Canadian health care in her letter [Let’stalk about health care, April 22 Letters, TIMES]

She writes that “our universal health care system…is the envy of many other countries,” yet neglects tomention that when measured against the health caresystems of other nations, it now ranks in the mid-20s.

She also insists reform means “we could wind upwith a radically different U.S.-style system.”

This is errant nonsense. It would be counterproductive to adopt an

American system that ranks below ours when thereare so many higher-ranked health care models fromwhich Canada can learn lessons.

Seventeen of the top-ranked health care systems inthe world are in Europe: they outperform ours andall incorporate a mixture of public and private healthcare.

Last year the OECD concluded that Canadian healthcare needs substantial reform and that the privatesector must be part of the solution.

That message was echoed last month by formerBank of Canada governor David Dodge, who warned,in a report for the C.D. Howe Institute, that the statusquo is fiscally unsustainable.

The biggest obstacles to improving Canadian healthcare are the ideologues who regard our half-century-old system as an article of faith and all would-bereformers as heretics.

We must allow our public figures to have an open, honest, and intelligent discussion of health carereform without, figuratively speaking, burning themat the stake.

Motherhood

Nothingcomparesto beingaMomDear Editor,

Of all the hats I haveworn, T-shirts I have col-lected, and goals I setfor myself, motherhoodhas been by far the mostrewarding.

They say anything worthhaving is worth work-ing for. The fruits of mylabours are two beautiful, honest and loving sons, theolder of which has marriedthe love of his life, who inher turn has become themost amazing mother.

My grandson was bornthree months early on April29, 2010. His first Mother’sDay was spent in the neo-natal intensive care unit atRoyal Columbian fightingto be with us. This yearmy daughter-in-law has thereward of having Linden inher arms, bouncing aroundthe room and delighting uswith his giggles and bellylaughs.

Maple Ridge Christian students in Bonnie Roda’s class were studying Japan just before the earthquake and tsunami hit.

Dentists and students arereaching out in the aftermath ofthe March 11 earthquake.by Maria [email protected]

Bonnie Roda’s class at MapleRidge Christian School had just fin-ished studying a unit on Japan andwoke up on March 11 prepared towrite their final exam on the subject.

To their shock and dismay, Japanhad been rocked a few hours earlierby a devastating earthquake thatregistered a nine on the Richter scaleand was followed by a tsunami thatcaused even more destruction.

“It was pretty sombre,” said AdamBlok, a student in Roda’s class, about waking up to the news.

Roda felt her class needed to dosomething for Japan and suggestedher students they hold a one-dayfundraiser where everyone wouldbring in some money and she’d givedouble of they brought.

She expected her students to bring

in about $50 in chump change andthought she’d have to donate $100herself.

Little did she realize the generosityof her students, many of whom duginto their own piggy-banks and bankaccounts and brought their ownmoney totalling $211.

“Boy, did I misjudge the generosityof their hearts,” she said. “One day,one small group with hearts of gold. This made both my pockets and myheart lighter.”

Roda ended up donating $422 ofher own money to bring their totalup to $633 which went to Japanthrough the Christian ReformedWorld Relief Committee.

“It was a good feeling... we accom-plished something,” Blok said.

Looking at the images of destruc-tion, students continue to beshocked at the magnitude of horror.

Not too far from the Maple RidgeChristian School, Cascade Dental isalso planning a fundraiser for Japanthis week.

Today and Friday (May 10 and13), the dental centre will be hostingan event called Red and White Day

and will be collecting donations tohelp Japan.

Dr. Ken Ginnan, a dentist ofJapanese descent who works at thecentre, along with his co-worker Dr.Jim Findlay will match all donationsmade for the Japan relief fund viathe Red Cross.

Ginnan still has relatives living inJapan, including his grandmother inthe main area hit by the earthquake.

Findlay, Cascade Dental’s owner, also had family in Japan – his broth-er and his family – who were therewhen the quake hit but who man-aged to get back to Canada safely.

Staff will be wearing red andwhite, which are the colours of theflag of Japan, but also of the RedCross.

The two dentists hope to raise$5,000 during the two-day effort,to help Japan through this naturaldisaster.

During these events, Ginnan willbe offering a free consultation forany dental health related questionson Tuesday May 10 from 9:30 a.m.to 4:30 p.m. and Friday, May 13from 1 to 2 p.m.

…continued from page A3She pointed out the example of

Davie Jones Elementary where theband program is done at no costbecause the teacher who relievesclassroom teachers for prep timeteaches band.

The school also did fundraisingand received grants to pay for theinstruments.

Board chair Ken Clarkson said theproposal to cut the elementary band

teacher position is partly to savemoney but also it could help sup-port the band programs at the highschool level where the school popu-lation is declining.

In addition, the ministry hashalved the fine arts requirement forstudents, so there are fewer studentstaking these courses.

“It’s not a cancellation of the pro-gram,” Clarkson said.

But he conceded, “it’s probably

not as convenient for the kids to goto the high schools.”

Clarkson said he’s received about15 emails advocating for the elemen-tary band program.

“Declining enrolment is about tohit high schools hard and the onesthat are [affected] are the electives,”Clarkson said.

The “fat” has been cut from theschool district a long time ago, andnow the cuts being made are getting

into the “meat,” he added. “We’relimited in what we can cut.”

George Serra, president of theMaple Ridge Teachers’ Association, said that while talk has been ofkeeping cuts away from the class-room, the continual “underfundingby the Liberal government” is start-ing to show up in the classrooms.

“This is the beginning of the dis-trict making cuts that highly impactkids,” he said.

Cuts might force kids to visit high school for music classes

Dear Anne,I grow leeks in trenches,

which I fill in with compostas the plant grows. I getnice, 10-inch long whitestems but the leeks are notvery thick. Is it possible that the

nutrients from the compostdon’t get down to the roots?

Bernie Epting, email

Iwonder if you aregrowing summer leeks. These are pale green,

fast-growing, and thinnerthan the longer-seasonwinter ones.

Names of summer leekvarieties include Varna,King Richard, Lancelot, and Jolant.

Winter types includeBlue Solaise, Durabel, andMusselburgh.

In the past you couldidentify summer leeksby their very quickgrowing times (70 to80 days), while thewinter or late fall leekswould be identified asneeding about 135 daysto harvest.

The originallong-growingwinterleeksoftenhave darkgreen leaves,sometimes with pur-ple tinges.

But in the last few years, hybrid leeks have beendeveloped with a varietyof growing times and leafshades.

Really, you need to trydifferent kinds of leeks in

your area and see whatworks for you.

I garden in raised bedsof clay loam and myfavourite leek is BlueSolaise.

It is very winter-hardyand has beautiful purple-green leaves.

I have been gettingthe seed from England(Chiltern) because I found

it hard to get locally.ButSaltspringSeeds startedoffering

Darcy’sPurpleLeek thisyear. I’m

hoping this isequally hardy.

Is it possibleyou’re starting yourleeks too late?

The more timeleeks have to growoutside, the fatterthey get because they

grow like onions addingan extra layer as they go.

Also leeks do need a lotof water, and this can bea problem for gardenerswith water restrictions.

Compost in leek trenchesis a great idea, so is a

grass clipping mulch fornutrition and to conservewater.

Earthworms congregateunder this mulch and getvery busy improving thesoil – their help is a realblessing any time, butespecially if you’ve gotclay.Dear Anne,We have a 30-year-old

rose bush that had to bemoved. The root was enormous

and we were wondering ifit could be cut in order topropagate another bush.Does it need rooting med-

ium?Elizabeth Monaghan, email

By themselves, theroots of a free-stand-ing rose bush are

highly unlikely to producea new plant, no matterhow you treat it.

Many roses are graftedand even if a new plantdid grow from graftedroots, it would be a wildtype with very differentleaves and flowers fromthe original top growth.

But if your rose bushwas on its own roots andmultiple-stemmed or proneto suckering, you couldpropagate a new rose bush

by splitting off a sectionof root together with itsattached upright stem (orsucker).

A root which containedan active suckering growthpoint might also become aplant.

Stem cuttings couldwork. These usually needto be cut and plungedinto soil when leaves areon the stems (August orSeptember are the bestmonths for this).

Stem cuttings do benefitfrom rooting hormone.Meanwhile, leaving a fewleaves on the stem willmake sure photosynthesiswill nourish the nodes thatproduce roots.

Three local teenagers arestudying the art ‘of foot andfist’ at Pacific Rim Institute ofTaekwon-Do.

Story and photos by Amy [email protected]

It may be a method of combatand self-defence, but three stu-dents who train in Pitt Meadowsare learning there is much morescience involved than knowinghow to kick and throw a punch.

They have all recently competedin competitions, and performedwell under the instruction of fifth-degree black belt Chris Law.

Ashley Jama, 17, has been train-ing in taekwondo for six years, and competed at the nationalschampionships last November.

The Pitt Meadows Secondarystudent came second in sparring, and second in patterns, which shesaid are the most difficult for her.

Sixteen-year-old Rani Pickeringagreed about patterns, eventhough she recently returnedfrom the 2011 InternationalTaekwondo Federation of B.C.Provincial Championships, whereshe competed in Junior Girls RedBelt Patterns, and won the silvermedal.

Soufian Azaz, 13, of MapleRidge competed in the same com-petition, and for the Junior BoysRed Belt sparring, captured thebronze medal.

To get to their skill level takes alot of time, practice, and dedica-tion, and the three young studentsknow they still have more to learn.

“The longer you’rehere, they test you,”said Pickering.

However, all threelove the sport, andespecially the fight-ing techniques thatcome with it.

“Fighting is fun,”smiled Azaz. BothJama and Pickeringappreciate the skillsfor self-defence.“They teach youhow to get out,” saidJama.

All three studentsare red belts, andJama and Azazhave a black lineon their belt, whichsymbolizes they areone level up fromPickering.

“It’s a very upbeat extra-curricu-lar activity,” said Pickering. “You

teach, you learn, you do. If you’reinto fighting then you get in there,

and it offers that too.”However, this tech-

nique is far from streetfighting. “We’re touch-ing but we’re not hurt-ing,” said Pickering.“We can control howclose we are,” addedJama.

As older, moreexperienced studentswho have been learn-ing for at least siyears, they also get toteach the little kids, but many people theyknow would not beinterested in learningthis martial art.

“All of my friendsare just too scared,”laughed Jama.

When the three ofthem demonstrated

a few patterns in the gym atPitt Meadows Secondary, they

explained theywill have to haveit down to a fineart if they want toreach black beltstatus. Patterns area series of movesput together in aspecific order thatrepresent attack-ing and defensivetechniques.

“You have tobe really pre-cise,” said Jama.“There’s lots ofthings you have toremember.”

Luckily theyhave fifth-degreeblack belt teacher Chris Law toguide them. Law is a three-timeCanadian champion in powerbreaking and pre-arranged spar-ring, as well as the national bronzemedalist in pattern competition.

He has just returned fromNew Zealand where he was

part of Team Canada, whichplaced seventh overall at theInternational Taekwondo WorldChampionships.

This was Law’s third time at theWorlds. “I was really nervous,”he said, “but really proud to rep-resent Canada on the world stage. Not many people get to do that.”

Law said he has been teachingthe three red belt students for fouryears. “They’re very energetic,” hesaid, “really eager to learn, hard-working.”

No doubt they want to impresstheir teacher who has competedall over the world.

“If it wasn’t for taekowndo,I wouldn’t know any of thesepeople,” he said. “I’m making apositive impact I hope.”

Law explained that the martialart is based on science. “It’s abouthow to create power,” he said, adding that a lot of instructorshave taken many university cours-es in science.

He commented that while hedoes not find any particular aspectof the sport too challenging, likehis students do, he knows histraining will never really be over.

“I can always go higher, I canalways be better,” said Law, whostarted training when he was nine.

However, like his students,he said there are many benefitsbesides learning fighting tech-niques. “Physically it is good formotor skills, getting in shape,

having fun,” hesaid. “Mentally itdevelops confidence, focus for sure.Perseverance,” headded.

Law is nowgetting some stu-dents ready forthe Northern B.C.Championships inPrince George inJune, and he said hewould like to com-pete in one moreworld champion-ships.

“The next one isin Spain in 2013,”he said.

“That will be it forcompeting.”

But he’ll still bementoring the nextgeneration of taek-

wondo champs with lessons everyweek.

The Pacific Rim Institute ofTaekwon-Do is located in PortCoquitlam and Pitt Meadows, andhas classes for kids and adults. Formore information check out www.pacificrimtkd.com/.

will have you hooked

from the moment you

square off, so sharpen

your pencil and put

your Sudoku savvy

to the test!

Here's How It Works:Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill eachrow, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numberswill appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
