We humans have languages. We have words. These words have meaning of things, action, feeling or ideas. We are able to __11__ each other information, to tell other people 12_____ we think or we feel. By writing down words, we can remember what has happened or 13_____ messages to people far away. Languages, like people, live and die. If a language is not used by people, it is called a dead language. This language cannot live and grow because  14______ speaks it. A living language, of course, is often spoken by people today. It grows and changes with time. New words are created, and some old words have 15_____ meanings.

I started working in the operating room after nursing school was over. Like many jobs, after a while the 1 disappeared. It soon became drudgery (苦差事) .

One night I was feeling very 2 , since I hadn’t slept well the night before. I didn’t like the doctor in charge, my feet hurt, it was late, and I was “doing eyes”. Every nurse has a favorite (and least favorite) task. My 3 favorite was eyes—I thought it was always 4 boring or unpleasant.

My 5 was an old man. He had come to the hospital 6 an eye problem. As the operation neared a close, I started to take the operating cloth 7 , and put drops in the patient’s eyes. We made eye contact when he said, “I can see!!!” and “You are beautiful.”

I 8 then what a big deal this all was to the patient and how truly thankful he was. I HAD HELPED HIM SEE! I said something to him about 9 he must be feeling from the medicine. But he still said, “No, you really are beautiful.”

I realized at that moment that 10 how I was feeling, what I was doing was important.

Life in the twenty-first century will be very 1 . Many changes will take place, but 2 will the changes be.

The population is growing 3 . There will be many 4 in the world and most of them will live 5 than people in the twentieth century.

Computers will be much smaller and 6 and there will be at least one in every 7 . And 8 studies will be one of the important subjects in school then.

People will work 9 and they will have more free time for sports, watching TV and travelling. 10 will be much easier and cheaper. And many more people will go to 11 countries for holidays.

There will be changes in our 12 , too. Maybe no one will eat meat every day, instead, they eat more fruit and vegetables. Maybe people will be 13 . Work in the future will be different, too. 14 and hard work can be done by robots. Because of this, 15 will not have enough work to do .This will be a problem.

The water and the land are thought part of the earth surface ( 表面 ). The air is 1 thought a kind of blanket ( 毯子 ) 2 the earth. But it is 3 than that. Maybe you have been in a cave ( 洞穴 ) 4 in the earth. Did you think about the air that was in the cave? The land has some air mixed in it. Air is even mixed 5 the water in the sea. These examples show that some air is 6 the earth’s surface as well as above it.

Men once 7 that there were four basic things from which everything else was made. They 8 these things-earth, fire, air and water the four elements ( 元素 ). 9 man made more observations, they 10 that fire was not an element. 11 they concluded ( 得出结论 ) that land, air and water were not elements, 12 .

13 , there are more than 100 elements from which scientists believe all things are made. 14 land, air and water are not elements, they are three main parts of man’s environment ( 环境 ). You will 15 more about them as you study the earth.

Many people think the 1 time is spent, the more work will be done. So students have to spend the whole 2 doing school work except the three meals.

Modern students have many 3 . They love sports, computers and music. A 4 holiday can get them away from too much school work, and they can do 5 they like. But still teachers do not think about it. Because students have too much homework, they have no time to 6 themselves. Students are really tired 7 their weekend homework. So they don’t do it 8 Sunday night. And there is not enough time to finish the homework 9 . The poor weekend homework usually makes teachers 10 .

Things always get 11 without right ideas. Too much school work makes students lose interest in learning. It’s also bad for their 12 . A horse runs faster after a 13 . But for students only rest is not enough. So such a condition ( 状况 ) should be 14 to give students both 15 and knowledge.

How did we help to save our earth this week? Let me tell you.

First, my family tried to save electricity. We never left the lights l _ when leaving the room. We 2 the TV when nobody was watching it. Mom only used cold water in the washing machine.

Second, we started recycling this week. We tried to write on 3 of the paper, not just on one side. We also divided our rubbish into 4 bags for bottles, paper and food. Mom kept the plastic shopping bags from the supermarket to use them again as rubbish bags.

Third, my family started to save 5 . We stopped 6 long baths and had short showers 7 . We washed toilet with used water. Mom and Dad used less water to do the washing. My sister and I didn't leave the tap running when we brushed our teeth.

At last, Mom and Dad began to save gas. Mom used to 8 us to school, but now my sister and I started riding our bikes to school. It's hard work 9 good exercise! This week Dad and a few of the people in his company also started to go to work in one car and share the 10 . These are great ways to help protect our environment.

As we all know, the environment around us is getting worse and worse. In some places we can't see fish l in the river or trees on the hills. Some people even have no clean water to drink.

Recently, a new lifestyle called low carbon life is 2 every corner of our country. The meanings of low carbon are 3 energy and no waste. It is such an important project that I can't wait 4 my ideas on how to promote it.

First, we should 5 a no-car day every week in our school. Because cars not only cause serious air pollution but also waste energy. 6 the no-car day, neither students 7 teachers are allowed to drive to school. At the same time, just walk or run. Use our 8 and enjoy the fun.

Page 22: Many animals use some kinds of “language”. They use signals( 信号 ) and the signals have meanings. For example, 1_____a bee has found some food, it goes.

Second, we had better not use plastic bags 9 . No one can stand the "white pollution", 10 it is wise to use cloth bags which can 11 again and again. 12 , one thing 13 we should keep in mind is that every big thing comes from the small details. So, as students, we ought to turn 14 the lights the moment we leave, use 15 sides of the paper, and reuse our textbooks and so on.

All in all, it weighs greatly for all of us to put the low carbon lifestyle into practice. Just set our mind to these no-car days, no plastic bags, and no waste. Let's do it now.

I had said goodbye to my husband, Joe, so often, but this time was __31__.

We now had our first child. After nights of talks, we made the difficult __32__ that Joe would go by himself to Alabama for the six-month training course, and I would stay behind with our new son. It was important that I __33__ my teaching position near our home at Fort Hood. Also we were part of a strong network of friends __34__ I could turn to for help.

On Joe's __35__ evening at home, I bathed little Joey, got him into his sleeper and was heading to the bedroom when Joe gently touched __36__ on the shoulder. Lifting the baby from my arms, he said he wanted to put Joey to bed tonight.

They headed down the hall, and I busied myself with meaningless tasks, __37__ Joe to turn up from the bedroom within a few minutes. A half hour went by, and __38__ he had not come back. Thinking he was having __39__ getting our son to fall asleep, I walked quietly to the baby's room and __40__ into the dimly-lit (灯光暗淡的) room.

Sitting in the rocking chair, moving slowly back and forth, was my husband with __41__ in his eyes. He was holding our baby in his arms __42__ he had fallen asleep long before. When his pained eyes met mine, he said, "I just can't put him down."

That night we stood over Joey's bed, holding each other and saying over and over that we would make it through this leaving and be __43__ again soon.

Joey is six now, and he has a four-year-old brother named Jack. There have been many goodbyes __44__ that night, yet my soldier still fights back tears when it's time to __45__ once again in service to his country and give his boys that last, long hug goodbye.
