3.) Run your floor jack or transmission jack under the rear end and jack it up for support. Don’t put a lot of pres-sure on the springs, it will make removal difficult. Just enough so the rear-end is supported.

4.) Using your 3/8" drive ratchet and a 7/16" socket go up into the inner fender and remove the bolt holding the top of the fuel filler tube in place. Remove the fuel filler tube by pulling it out of the gas tank, you may have to rock it a bit to break it loose. The filler tube will be in the way later so we will remove it now.

5.) With your 3/4" socket and 1 /2" ratchet or air impact remove the bolts that hold the shocks on the lower spring plate. The shocks do not have to be completely removed, just let them hang.

Over the course of time the suspension systems on vehicles deteriorate, sometimes to the point that you have major problems. Rubber bushings get hard, springs loose their tension and eventually these items need to be serviced. For our first tech article of 2009 we will cover how to replace the leaf springs in your classic. Along the way we will also cover other parts you should replace and show you a few tricks to make the job go smoother. This job can be done in a couple of hours and you don’t need a lift or air tools like we used, hand tools, a floor jack and jackstands will work just fine, but having them sure makes the job easier. Let’s get started….

Tools Needed:• 1/2" Drive Ratchet (or Air Impact) and Extensions• 5/8" and 3/4" 1/2" Drive Sockets• 3/8" Drive Ratchet and Extensions• 7/16" 3/8" Drive Socket• 9/16", 11/16" and 3/4" Combination Wrenches• Plastic Hammer• Assortment of Punches• Jackstands or a Lift• Floor Jack or Transmission Jack• White Lithium Grease or another quality Grease• O-ring for the Fuel Filler Tube,Danchuk #195A

1.) Start by either putting the car up on the rack or lift-ing it up on jackstands with your floor jack. If you are using jackstands be sure that you get the car up high enough so you can wiggle the rear end out under the rear of the car if necessary.

2.) Remove the rear wheels and tires us-ing your 1/2" drive ratchet or air impact and a 3/4" socket on the lug nuts.

Happy New Year! 2008 was an interesting year to say the very least. It’s been business as usual here at Danchuk though. We finished a number of great projects in 2008 and we have even more irons in the fire for ’09.

Keep a close eye on us this year; you don’t want to miss some of the new items and improvements we’ve been working on. Another huge addition to Danchuk this year is going to be our brand new website. I cannot begin to tell you about all the improvements there are going to be on this new site. We have been working like dogs on it for the better part of 2008 and should have it up and running extremely soon. Not just it’s improved look and ease of use but it will be chock full of new features and, ready for this, live stock so that you will know immediately that your order is complete and ready to go.

Believe it or not these are just a couple of the great new things you are going to see from Danchuk in ’09. Do keep an eye on us and we’ll try our best to keep you wowed.

6.) With the same 3/4" socket you used to remove the lower shock bolts remove the nuts holding the bottom shock plate to the U-bolts. Be careful to undo all 4 evenly or you could bind or twist the plate making it difficult to remove. It should drop away from the springs and U-bolts.

7.) With your 11/16" a n d 3 / 4 " c o m b o wrenches, remove the nut from the bolt that holds the front of the spring to the frame bracket. Be careful with the nut as it could fall inside the frame. Then remove the nuts from the shackles in the rear with your 5/8" wrench or a socket. Remove the plate on the shackles.

8.) At this point using your hammer and a punch, drive the bolt that holds the front of the spring into the spring pocket out of the spring. Make sure to have someone support the front of the spring just in case it drops out of the spring pocket….it should stay, but be on the safe side. When the bolt has been removed, pry the front of the spring out of the spring pocket and hang from the shackles, if you are using a rack, or set on the ground if you are using jackstands.

9.) Remove the spring

from the rear shackles and set aside. You will need to adjust the height of the jack and raise the rear-end to put in the new springs, so get it up out of your way so you have room to work.

10.) Using your plastic hammer so as not to damage the threads, remove the shackle from the shackle bracket. It may be necessary to use a punch here as well. Our rubber bushings were hard, so the shackle stud came right out. Remember how the shackle was

positioned so you get them back in place correctly. Remove the bushings from the shackle brackets on the frame.

Now you are ready to install the new springs into the car. If you are replacing the springs then the front bushing will be already pressed into the front spring eye. If you are just replacing the bushings then you will have to press the old bushing out of the front spring eye and press the new one in. This can sometimes be done with a large vise or you will need a press. We are replacing the springs, so ours is already installed.

11.) Before you start to put the car back together lubricate all the bushings and bolts, spring shack-les where the bush-ings install and any other point that will move. This will assure that there will be no binding or squeaks. Assemble 1/2 the shackle bushings onto the shackles.

12.) Install the front of the spring in the spring pocket. You may need to use a punch to line up the holes and to get the front of the spring into place. Once you have the holes lined up, use your plastic hammer to drive the new front spring bolt into place.

Here is the list of parts we feel should be replaced when doing this job. The quantity you need is in parentheses after the part number if more than one is needed. What you actually will replace will depend on what condition your old parts are in.

• New U-Bolts, Danchuk #069 (4)• New Spring Plates with Lower Shock Studs: Danchuk #1904 Or Shock Studs: Danchuk #14983• New Axle Bumpers: Danchuk #861 and 862.• New Lower Axle Bumper Retainers: Danchuk #2255


17.) Now, replace the bumper above the axle in the middle of the floor by loosening the nut with a 9/16” combo wrench. Install the new bumper and tighten.

18.) Now you can re-install the shocks. If the shock is hanging lower than the shock bolt on the spring plate, compress the shock until it lines up with the bolt. If the spring bolt is below the shock then you will have to raise the rear-end or compress the spring until they line up. When they are in position, line the hole up with the shock bolt and tap it back into place with your plastic hammer. Be careful not to damage the shock tube in the process. Install the nut and tighten with your 1/2" ratchet and your 3/4" socket.

19.) Next, install a new O-ring on the fuel filler tube, lubricate it with some grease and install it back into the gas tank. Using your 7/16” wrench, install the bolt that holds the tube to the bracket inside the fender well.

20.) Put the wheels and tires back on the car (make sure you are putting them on the same side they were on before you started) using your 1/2" ratchet or air impact and a 3/4" socket on the lug nuts and you are finished! All that is left is to lower the car back to the ground.

13.) Hang the rear shackles into posi-tion on the shackle brackets. Then raise the rear of the spring into place on the lower shackle bolt. Install the two remaining bushings into the shackles and install the plate and nuts. Tighten until snug with a 5/8" wrench or socket. Then in-stall the nut on the front bushing bolt and tighten. With a 3/4" socket on a short ex-tension on the nut and an 11/16" wrench on the bolt head, tighten the front bolt with your 1/2" ratchet or air impact.

14.) Now that the springs are back in place you can lower the rear end back in place. Be sure to line up the pin in the spring with the hole in the spring pad. You don’t want to install the rear-end crooked.

15.) Next, remove the axle bumper and cover from the axle and replace it with your new parts. Use the plastic hammer to tap it out of the slot in the axle. Reverse the procedure to install your new one.

16.) Hang the U-bolts over the axle, one on each side of the spring. Use the lower spring plate to line up the U-bolts into the correct position. Be sure you have the shock studs pointing the correct way or you will not be able to install the shocks. Start the nuts on the U-bolts by hand and then, using your 1/2" drive ratchet or air impact and 3/4" socket, tighten them up. You want to work slowly and tighten them evenly. Get them snug, but don’t over tighten. Make sure that the ends of the U-bolts don’t extend down below the bottom of the wheel you are using. If they do, you will have a problem if you have a blowout.

A while back in the Danchuk Update we did a story about how Chevrolet got it’s name from Louis Chevrolet and how William Durant and Louis formed the Chevrolet Motor Company using Louis’s name in order to capitalize on his reputation as a car builder and engineer. As a follow up to that story we wondered where the famous “Bowtie” came from. A little research turned up this great article written by Kenneth Kaufman, which appeared in the VCCA (Vintage Chevrolet Club of America) club magazine, G&B (Generator and Distributor), in 1990. Ken was kind enough to allow us to share it with our readers.

Origins of the Bowtie

Chevrolet Bowtie HistoryThe Chevrolet Bowtie has been one of the World’s most recognized trade-marks since 1913, when William C. Durant first introduced the symbol that represents Chevrolet’s winning success.

Legend says that Durant copied the bowtie design from wallpaper he saw in a Paris Hotel. The 50 Year Anniversary issue of “The Chevrolet Story”, printed in 1961, told the story this way.

“This was also the year (1913) that the famous Chevrolet trademark was first used on the cars. The distinctive trademark has appeared billions of time on products, advertisings and sales literature as the mark of depend-ability, economy and quality in motor transportation. It originated in Durant’s imagination when, as a world traveler in 1908, he saw the pattern marching off into infinity as a design on wallpaper in a French hotel. He tore off a piece of the wallpaper and kept it to show friends with the thought it would make a good nameplate for a car.”

Between Soup and ChickenMargery Durant in her book, My Father, wrote in 1929 her version of how her father designed the Chevrolet Bowtie:

“As in the case of Buick, my father drew name-plates on pieces of paper at the dinner table. I think it was between the soup and the fried chicken one night that he sketched out the design that is used on the Chevrolet car to this day.”

Wife has the Last WordA story in the Chevrolet Pro Management Magazine, October 1986, told that W. C. Durant did not copy the design from the wallpaper in a French hotel room, and that according to Mrs. Durant, the bowtie emblem was first seen by her husband in an illustrated Virginia newspaper while they were vacationing in Hot Springs, Virginia around 1912. Mrs. Durant was quoted as recalling, “We were in a suite reading the papers and he saw this design and said, ‘I think this would be a very good emblem for the Chevrolet“. She did not explain how the newspaper used the emblem.

The 75th Anniversary issue of “The Chevrolet Story”, printed in 1986, gave both versions of the stories with the comment that Billy Durant, himself, confirmed the Paris hotel story, which was later refuted by his wife with the Sunday newspaper in Virginia story. Chevrolet Media Productions then wrapped things up by writing: “Whatever the source, the Bowtie proved to be a recognizable winner, and is still the marquee of today’s Chevrolet.” The source of Mrs. Durant’s account is Lawrence R. Gustin, who interviewed Catherine Durant in 1973 for his book, Billy Durant, Creator of General Motors, and recorded her story of the bowtie in this book. Ever since I read Catherine’s logical explanation 17 years ago, I have been on the lookout for the true source of the bowtie, and I may have found it.


Coalettes BowtieI have been reading a South-ern newspaper, The Constitu-tion, from Atlanta, Georgia, looking for how the Whiting, Little, Chevrolet, Monroe, and Scripps-Booth motorcars were actually marketed in this southern hub city between 1910 and 1917. I “spotted” this Coalettes bowtie ad and experienced the same excite-ment Durant must have, al-most eighty years ago, when he might have “spotted” the same ad in the same paper. The date of this Constitu-tion ad was November 12, 1911. Nine days after the Chevrolet Motor Company was incorporated.

Little CoalsLook at the similarities be-tween the Coalettes and the now famous Durant designed Bowtie! Both started with a ‘C’, had nine letters, had the suffix ‘let’, and were hard to pronounce-in a French way. Both emblems have a dark background with white borders and white letters. The main difference was the Coalettes letters were slanted and used a stylistic typeface, while Durant used a more formal Roman typeface and squared off the center bow, three letters wide.

It appears that the reason the Southern Compressed Coal Company designed the bowtie logo in thefirst place was to highlight the large, middle ‘E’, to help the public pronounce this coined word easier. (Maybe, this is where Durant got the idea to pronounce Chevrolet “Shev-Ro-Lay”)

I looked up the suffix ‘-let’ or ‘-lette’ in the dictionary and was surprised to find it means little or small. Therefore, the coined word Coalettes means “Little Coals”. I would think the Southern Compressed Coal Company had the Coalettes name and bowtie emblem registered as a trademark and will look through the trademark registrations at the Patent Office in the future. This is a really great ad! I bet Durant tore it out of the newspaper to save for future reference. Note how the ad copy stresses performance, economics, neighborhood availability and “positively leaves no clunkers”. Coalettes seemed to have many good features, I wonder if it was successful?

The Origin of the “Little” Nameplate too?One more closing observation. This Coalettes ad used a round circle with the slogan, “The Little Coals with the big heat”. Durant’s Little Motor Car Company also used a round nameplate emblem with the name LITTLE inside which had a “heated red” background. Just a coincidence? Or did Durant’s idea come from seeing this ad like seeing this ad gave him the idea for the bowtie?

First Chevrolet Bowtie Ad?Here is the earliest Chevrolet Bowtie Ad I have been able to find in any newspaper or publication. This “Look for this Nameplate” ad was found in the Washington Post for October 2, 1913. The printing is not the greatest, but it is interesting because the bowtie appears to be drawn by hand, the ‘CH’ did not print well, and the Chevrolet name was printed in a not correct slanted type.

These columns are designed specifically for 1955-56-57 ap-plications and come with four-way flashers. You have the option of with or without automatic transmission column shift. They come in a paintable or chromed steel or a brushed or polished aluminum. We have columns that will work with your stock steering box or your upgraded 500 or 605 box. Kit includes wire har-ness adapter, steering column coupler, lower mounting bracket, and billet steering column knobs. Easy to install, we are certain you’ll be thrilled.

For the 1957 we have the original loop (in correct colors), and a plush. Carpet sets are pre-sewn with heel pad and jute padding attached. Other colors available, please inquire. Q: My stock windshield wipers don’t work as well as they could and I was wondering which of the kits you sell is easier to install?

A: Both kits Danchuk sells are fairly straight forward as far as an installation is concerned but they require removing all the original mechanisms and replacing them. Depending on what the problem is, however, your wipers may just need to be adjusted. If the cables are loose under the dash this will cause a big problem. You can tighten them buy pushing down on the nubs where the wipers attach. This releases the spring inside the wiper transmissions and allows them to tighten up the cables.

Q: I recently restored the vent windows on my 55 sedan using all Danchuk seals, etc. and the windows do not seem to close all the way and I can’t latch the window to the channel. What did I do wrong? I double checked the parts to make sure I had everything on the correct side, but they seem to be getting hung up on the corners of the rubber seal. Do I have to trim the rubber around the window frame?

A:: Sometimes you will need to apply some parafin wax to the problem areas or some dish soap for lubrication. After the rubber has seated and compressed a little you should have no other problems.

As you may know, Danchuk opened a shipping facil-ity in Brownsburg Indiana back in October of 2006. When we started out we were training a new crew and didn’t have the time, or personnel, to service walk in customers, just call ahead will calls. But as time went by and more people picked up will call orders they started asking when they would be able to just drop in and pick up what they needed. In January of 2008 we had enough demand that we felt we had to just say…come on down.

One of our first walk-ins was a gentleman named Rick Jones. Rick was building a 57 210 Sedan and had been trying to deal with one of our competitors but every time he went to buy something they didn’t have what he needed in stock. He was a Danchuk customer as well and called the order desk in California one day to order some parts. He got his order up for will call and when he picked it up he asked if he could just come down and get what he needed. Not a problem, we said.

Where are we going with this you ask? Well, Rick is officially the first counter customer in Indiana to finish a car. And what a beauty! Rick went “retro 60’s” with

his project, as this was the car he always wanted “back in the day” but didn’t have the resources to build. Of course, as we grow older lack of resources becomes less of a problem, and Ricks project got started.

Rick found a very nice 57 210 sedan that needed a lot of TLC. He stripped it down and took the body off the frame. Rick sent the body to Anderson’s Body Shop to have the panels massaged and to have the beautiful Torch Red paint applied while he started on the frame. It was completely cleaned and everything was either rebuilt or replaced before it was painted and reassembled back to its original state.

Next came the engine. As we said, Rick wanted a retro 60’s car so the only motor that fit the bill was a genuine early Corvette 283 with an Edelbrock Intake and Carburetor, Pertronix Electronic Ignition and Doug’s headers. Rick opted to keep the original 3 speed, which was totally rebuilt, and he kept the car a 3-on-the-tree for that nostalgic look.

When it was time to do the interior Rick enlisted the help of Victor’s Upholstery. Rick wanted a variation

ANoTHER FIRST FoR danchuk INdIANA!on an original interior. He wanted to keep the original stainless in the door and rear panels but did them in smooth and diamond pleat black vinyl. The seats were done in the diamond pleat with a smooth headliner. He painted the dash black to match, rounding out the look. To dress it up a little Rick installed 57 Chevrolet 210 dash scripts. We have to say his vision was right on the money.

When it came time to put the car back together Rick’s original intention was to turn his 210 into a Belair. But when he got to thinking about it he decided that he re-ally liked the silver trim on the 210 more than the gold trim on the Bel Air. So he added a pair of smooth side panel inserts and will be changing the fin mouldings to the long Bel Air moulding as soon as they become available. The rest of the trim is done in silver or chrome just as it came from the factory. Rick topped off the look with Cragar SS’s and raised white letter TA’s. The past year or so Rick has become more than just a customer to us here in Indy. He has become a friend. We thank him for letting us show off his car in the Danchuk Update.

As we enter 2009 there are many things uncertain, but you can rest assured none of those things will be the way Danchuk Manufacturing continues to do business.
