INTRODUCTION

Informative product signage improves the shopping experience by making it easier for customers to navi-gate the product offering, while providing inspiration and appropriate information to help them choose the products that best suit their needs.

The store signage team works closely with the merchandising team and product suppliers to develop relevant, effective, well located and easy-to-understand signage to maximize customers’ ability to make pur-chases without assistance. Of course, all signage needs to reflect RONA’s brand image and standards.

The aim of this guide is to make it easy for RONA’s partners and store staff to design and produce the various in-store communication tools.

The guide provides information on the company’s signage rules and standards, as well as:

Recommended display holder types

Suggested visual and editorial content

Recommended visual style – technical and inspirational

Graphic standards, colours and official type faces

Graphic style templates

Print production and reproduction rules to maintain a high level of quality and homogeneity (materials, print process)

SIGNAGE AND DISPLAY TYPES

Customers follow a shopping approach that needs to be taken into consideration. Customers first orient them-selves and then gather specific information about products. Every type of point-of-sale signage holder, whether placed near or at a distance, has a role to play in helping customers make their purchases.

Placement, height and legibility are important factors to consider. The following diagram illustrates the usual heights in the aisles and specifies which kind of holder should be used.



ROLE AND SPECIFICATIONS

Directional signage

Helps consumers quickly find their way to the department or category they are looking for. It needs to be impact-ful, highly visible from far away and easy to read.

1. Vertical banner or sliding panels

Vertical banner

Role Identifies a product category or product group at a glance. Ideal for open areas or those set back somewhat. It also helps improve the atmosphere and store personality. Combined with a header, it clearly identifies a category. The banner makes it easy to reach merchandise located behind it.

Role Identifies the sub-department or product categories located in the shelf section. This item can be used to create impact in a section in order to attract customers’ attention quickly. Used primarily to differentiate between distinct yet similar-looking products, it can be customized for specific products and hold detailed product specifications, such as colour codes and complementary services.

6. Sliding panels

Role Use this type of holder where space allows.

This medium is used to provide detailed information about the merchandise contained in the rack. The sliding panels make it easy to reach merchandise located behind them.

GATHERING RELEVANT INFORMATION

This section is intended for product suppliers. It contains suggestions on how to gather quality information with an eye to producing informative signage that meets RONA standards.

Asking the right questions

Here are some examples of questions to ask yourself in order to gather quality information:

1. Who are my target customers (age, profession, revenue, education, etc.)?

2. What are the steps involved in selecting the product?

3. Which main features do customers seek out when purchasing the product?

4. Why would they buy your product instead of a competitor’s (or vice-versa)?

5. Why would they not buy your product or a competitor’s?

Take the right actions

Here are some examples of actions you can take in the store to gather quality information:

1. Ask customers if they consider your store signage to be attractive, legible, clear and easy to understand, not to mention useful in helping them make purchases without assistance.

2. Find out what would make it easy for customers to buy this product without assistance.

3. Check with store staff about whether your findings match their daily experience with customers.

4. Do the exercise with a number of customers and employees at different stores.

You will then be well equipped to produce your new signage at your location. Once done, you will again be able to verify that your target customers understand the signage.


CONTENT GUIDELINES

EDITORIAL GUIDELINES

Here are a few rules regarding informational content:

Written concisely and in summary form, ideally as a bullet list

Easy to understand (no technical jargon)

Meets customers’ needs and answers their questions

Highlights the product’s added value (product benefits and unique features, quality, warranty, etc.)

Presents information in the form of a comparison table when possible

The in-store signage team works closely with the merchandising team and the supplier to write quality content.

SIGNAGE LANGUAGE

In Quebec

In RONA and RONA L’Entrepôt stores in Quebec, informational product signage must be in French only. To comply with the regulations of the Office québécois de la langue française, exceptions will not be tolerated.

However, informational pamphlets distributed to customers can be in English, French or both.

Outside Quebec

In RONA and RONA HOME & GARDEN stores located outside the province of Quebec, informational product signage is in English only.


CONTENT GUIDELINES

TRANSLATION AND REVISION

Process

1. The agency creates the proof.

2. The final proof is approved by the supplier, store signage team and merchandising team.

3. Send the PDF version of the final proof to the translator RONA has selected.

4. The store signage team receives the translation and sends it to the agency.

5. The agency does the layout of the translated proof.

6. The translated version must be approved by the supplier, store signage team and merchandising team.


GUIDELINES FOR VISUALS AND GRAPHICS

LOGO USE

RONA Logo

The RONA logo can be placed on any signage promoting RONA-brand products. Otherwise, it is not neces-sary to place it on product information signage; you want to avoid overusing the logo throughout the store.

Buffer space

Logos must always be clearly set apart from the background. It is therefore important to ensure that the buf-fer zone surrounding the logo is free of graphics and typographical elements.

The buffer space must consist of a certain unit of measurement above and below the logo, as well as on both sides.

Supplier logos

Placed on product information signage, the logo must in most cases be located at the top right of the page within the blue band. If the space is already occupied by the model name, the supplier’s logo will be placed at the bottom-right of the page.

When applied to a blue (or dark) background, it is best to use the white monochrome version.

When there are many supplier logos, they should all be visually proportional.

No logo may identify a product section or category, or take up a disproportionate amount of space.

Colour coding should be used primarily for:

Differentiating a product range/quality (e.g. good, very good, excellent)

Segmenting by technology (e.g. LED, compact fluorescent, halogen or incandescent light bulbs)

Compartmentalizing/regrouping product ranges (e.g. outdoor nails, finishing nails, roofing nails, etc.)

Distinguishing products on shelves where they may be confused (e.g. baseboards, frames, decora-tive mouldings)

Accentuating an existing coding scheme already used by the industry (e.g. locks)

Colour coding hierarchy

Make sure to always follow the proposed sequence depending on the number of colours being used.

Rules to follow:

1. Controlling visual pollution: Avoid having colour codes randomly covering the shelves, conflicting from one shelf section to another, or creating confusion with packaging.

2. Always present a legend and don’t take for granted that it’s obvious. The explanation must be easy for customers to understand, be highly visible and stand out from the whole.

3. Follow the colour chart hierarchy developed by RONA as much as possible, except for a few exceptions that need to be approved by the store signage team.

SIGNAGE PROJECT PROCEDURES

SIGNAGE ENCODING

RONA labels each sign produced with a specific number. This makes identifying the sign easy and simplifies its replacement in case of breakage.

The number is attributed by the store signage team and printed (8 pt max) in the bottom-right or bottom-left corner of the signs, as the case may be.

Note: All signage numbers begin with an F to indicate that the signs are informa-tive signs relating to products from suppliers.

Digital InDesign templates are available for download from sign.rona.ca.

Use your e-mail address and password to log in.

The first time you visit, click the NEW USER link and follow the instructions to create your account.

SENDING SOURCE FILES WORKING DOCUMENTS

Uploading files to sign.rona.ca

All files developed must be sent to the entire store signage team in accordance with the requirements stated on the next page. New items will be posted on sign.rona.ca to enable merchants to place new orders or order reprints.

To do so, log in to the site and click Send a file. Follow the instructions on the screen.



DIGITAL FILE REQUIREMENTS

Recommended applications

Files must be created using the following software on a Mac: Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator.

Source files, including font and links folders, and low- and high-resolution PDF files, must be uploaded to the sign.rona.ca platform in a compressed (ZIP) file.

Rendering files

Documents must be rendered at 100% of actual size if possible; if not, 25% is acceptable.

Images must be linked and not embedded in the file to simplify handling.

Image resolution

Offset and small-format prints: 300 dpi

Large-format digital prints: 150 dpi (minimum) to 200 dpi (recommended)

Text box

All files must include a text box at the bottom, containing the information listed below. A text box template can be downloaded from sign.rona.ca under “Resources”.
