is designed or aspiring photographers. The Mode Dial

on the top is simple to use and has been designed to

make one-hand shooting comortable. Compact, light-

weight and available in two colours, black and silver,

you can take the EOS 400D anywhere. The optional

Battery Grip BG-E3 adds buttons or vertical shooting,

and takes either NB-2LH batteries or AAs.

Highly responsive Autoocus makes or shooting excitement. The camera

automatically uses one o the 3 AF systems to deliver ast, spot-on ocus in any

situation. One Shot AF is the best choice or still subjects, locking in ocus as you

push the shutter button halway. Al Servo AF tracks active subjects, predicting

their movement. And Al Focus AF switches between One-Shot AF and Al Servo AF

Once transerred to a computer, Canons EOS Digital Solution Disk (Ver. 13.0 as o September

2006), and Digital Photo Proessional (Ver. 2.2), add a combination o powerul, easy to use

EOS Soltion Disk (Version 13)

The EOS Solution Disk includes ZoomBrowser EX 5.7 and ImageBrowser 5.7, which provide

simple storage, editing and sharing options or images. Also included is EOS Utility 1.1 or

simple remote shooting and image downloading, and PhotoStitch which allows images to

be joined to create impressive panoramas.

Canons world-renowned line-up o EF Lenses includes over 50 models ranging rom 14mm ultra-wide-angle to 600mm super-

telephoto. Through Canons advanced optical know-how and sub-micron precision engineering, EF Lenses oer unprecedented

capabilities that meet wide-ranging needs. Leading eatures include a high precision Ultrasonic Motor that silently drives the AF

mechanism, an Image Stabilizer that automatically compensates or camera shake, aspherical optics, Fluorite lenses, Ultra Low

Dispersion (UD) lenses, and Super UD lenses.

The proessionls choice: L-Series

No other line o lenses carries the reputation o Canons renowned L-series. Easily recognised by the bold red ring around the

outer barrel, these lenses utilise the best in Canons cutting-edge technology, and eature superior durability and resistance to

the elements, enhancing perormance without compromising ease o use.

One o the greatest challenges in the design o a telephoto lens has been the minimisation

o colour ringing, or chromatic aberration. So, some L-series lenses use Canons Ultra Low

Dispersion glass to help minimise this eect. The design o the UD glass provides outstanding

contrast and sharpness and minimises the splitting o colours as they pass through the

elements. In certain super-telephoto lenses, Fluorite elements are used, as they are even

more eective in minimising these characteristics, enabling more compact lens design with no

compromise in perormance. Wide angle and ast standard lenses oten suer rom another

optical problem: Spherical Aberration. This occurs when the point o ocus o the light ray

coming through the centre o the lens does not align with the point o ocus o the light ray

coming through the lens edge. Since there is no sharp point o ocus, the image looks blurred.

Canons aspherical elements change the curvature rom centre to edge to align the points o

ocus o the incoming light rays so that the entire image plane appears ocused.

Imge Stbilizer

Canons Image Stabilizer (IS) technology makes handheld

photography possible in more low-light situations than ever

beore. When camera shake occurs using normal lenses without

IS technology, the image projected on the ocal-plane also shakes,

oten resulting in blurred images at slower shutter speeds. In thesame situation, with an IS lens attached to the camera, a special

group o lens elements automatically shit position, compensating or

the movement and stabilising the image. This compensatory eect

adds the equivalent o up to three stops o exposure, expanding

photographers handheld options dramatically.

Dirctive Optics: DO

Lenses using Canons Diractive Optics are both high perormance and more compact

than those with t raditional reractive designs. While conventional glass elements disperseincoming light, thereby causing chromatic aberration, Canons unique multi-layer

diractive elements work together with conventional glass optics to reduce the eects

o dispersion and minimise or eliminate chromatic aberration. Diractive coatings are

bonded to the rear surace o one lens element and the ront surace o another. These

elements are attached together to orm a single multi-layer diractive (DO) element. This

elements dispersion characteristics are reversed when compared to conventional optics,

making it possible to cancel chromatic aberrations at each wavelength when conventional

and DO elements are combined.

Mcro Lenses

To bring small things into ull-sized view, Canons EF lens line-up has a number o options or true

close-up and macro photography. With macro lenses or precision, and three screw-on close-up

lenses or convenience - in addition to EF Lie-Size Converter and two Extension Tubes, Canon

has a perect close-up option or any situation.

TS-E Lenses

TS-E lenses are capable o tilt and shit movements, bringing many o the advantages o technical

view cameras to the EOS system. Tilt movements alter the angle o the plane o ocus between the lens

and CMOS sensor (or flm plane), making broad depth-o-feld possible even at large apertures; shit

movements move the lens optical axis in parallel, allowing the photographer to control perspective.

Sper Telephoto

Canons Super Telephoto lenses are renowned or their optics, perormance and

speed. They can be ound on the sidelines o every major sports event around the

world. From the EF 300mm /2.8L IS USM all the way to the EF 600mm /4L IS USM,

every proessionals arsenal will be ortifed with an L-series Super Telephoto.

E-TTL II: Smrter fsh perormnce

Canons high-end digital SLRs employ E-TTL II, the most advanced ash metering

technology, to solve problems encountered by photographers. Occasionally, i you lock

ocus and recompose your shot, this could result in a non-optimal exposure with previous

systems. E-TTL II remedies this by ignoring the active ocusing point, considering distanceinormation and evaluating pre-ash inormation immediately beore the exposure occurs.

Sometimes in ash photography, mirror-like objects in the image cause the sensor to

register localised, abnormally high levels, and would result in underexposure. E-TTL II

knows to ignore those levels, resulting in the correct exposure. This eature is useul when

shooting a subject with a highly reective object in the background, or i the subject itsel

is highly reective. Metered areas with large discrepancies between ambient and pre-

ash readings are excluded or down-weighted because they are assumed to contain a

highly reective subject. These readings are weighted, averaged and compared with the

ambient light reading and the main ash output is then set and stored in memory, ensuring

consistent ash output through a number o shots.
