MANRESA REVUE MAY-JUNE 2017 Volume 107 Issue 5&6 FROM THE GRAND KNIGHT’S DESK Dear Brother Knights and Sister Columbiettes, As I begin my final GK Letter, the one word that describes how I’m feel- ing is wow! Where did the time go? The past two years seem to have passed at light speed! The two years may have passed quickly, but, they were quite fulfilling for me as your Grand Knight. I worked hard, spent many evenings away from home, but trust me I was able to get much more out of this experience than the time and effort I expended. We were able to accomplish some tremendous things during my term. I won’t go through the laundry list of items, but I will list a few highlights that I feel deserve mention. Manresa was able to establish the best web presence of any Council on Staten Island via Facebook and through our dedicated website manresa2147.org. These two outlets allowed us to communicate our message to members and non- members alike. This is a powerful tool and we are still working on ways to expand the scope of this medium. Special thanks to Mark Curi, for doing the heavy lifting and being instrumental in its expansion and de- velopment. During my tenure we have expanded our community outreach via Spe- cial Olympics, Wheelchair Mission, Keep Christ in Christmas Poster Contest, Coats for Kids and Challenger Football League among others. Every one of these initiatives has the same thing in common, one or more members who saw a need, and decided to step up to make a dif- ference. This is what separates Manresa Council from the rest, our drive and dedication. Socially, we are able to accomplish an incredible amount of good will through numerous dances, picnics, pancake breakfasts, jacket mass- es, game nights, parties and outings. As a Grand Knight I tried my best to reach out to other Councils for support and fraternity. I believe we are heading in the right direction, when at our most recent party we had two full tables of Knights and Columbiettes from different Councils on Staten Island in attendance. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my Officers who constantly challenge me to do more and be better, our Trustees and Past Grand Knights who point true North always, our Columbiettes who constantly show me what great things a dedicated group can accomplish. I would also like to thank all of you who had faith in me and our Officers to en- trust us with this tremendous responsibility to guide this Council for the past two years. I want you to know I always took your trust in me seri- ously and every decision I made had your best interests at heart. In closing my sadness in moving on is tempered with the knowledge that I am leaving the Manresa Council with the full faith that the newly elected slate of Officers will continue to take Manresa to new levels of greatness and community involvement. On behalf of myself, my lovely wife Cathy and my family, I would like to thank all of you for the faith and confidence you have shown me. I would also like to thank you for providing me with this tremendous op- portunity to do good works and develop myself spiritually. God bless you all. MANRESA REVUE MAY-JUNE 2017 Volume 107 Issue 5&6

FROM THE GRAND KNIGHT’S DESK

Dear Brother Knights and Sister Columbiettes,

As I begin my final GK Letter, the one word that describes how I’m feel-ing is wow!

These two outlets allowed us to communicate our message to members and non-members alike. This is a powerful tool and we are still working on ways to expand the scope of this medium. Special thanks to Mark Curi, for doing the heavy lifting and being instrumental in its expansion and de-velopment.

During my tenure we have expanded our community outreach via Spe-cial Olympics, Wheelchair Mission, Keep Christ in Christmas Poster Contest, Coats for Kids and Challenger Football League among others. Every one of these initiatives has the same thing in common, one or more members who saw a need, and decided to step up to make a dif-ference. This is what separates Manresa Council from the rest, our drive and dedication.

Socially, we are able to accomplish an incredible amount of good will through numerous dances, picnics, pancake breakfasts, jacket mass-es, game nights, parties and outings.

I would also like to thank all of you who had faith in me and our Officers to en-trust us with this tremendous responsibility to guide this Council for the past two years. I want you to know I always took your trust in me seri-ously and every decision I made had your best interests at heart.

I would also like to thank you for providing me with this tremendous op-portunity to do good works and develop myself spiritually. God bless you all.

COLUMBIETTES PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Sister Columbiettes,

Where do I begin? It seems like just yesterday I was trying to come up with my first President’s letter. Well, let’s start at the beginning with a look back. These past two years have provided me with many fond memories and growth in both my spiritual life and within our Auxiliary. To see Manresa Columbiettes grow and mature into a vibrant and active Auxiliary has been both an honor and a privilege for me. From our inception 7 years ago till now has been an amazing transformation for Manresa and myself.

We have raised countless dollars and logged many volunteer hours helping out our local community, our sister Colum-biettes, our brother Knights and those less fortunate who needed our help. All the while fostering a spiritual sister-hood of working together, sharing ideas and fellowship. I am especially proud of how we come together to help those in need, usually with short notice and little fanfare. Time and again this group has reached out and gone beyond what was expected to help others.

Our dances, Spring Teas, Nights at the Races, Dine Out Nights, Steal Bingos and our newest major event Radio Bin-go bring Columbiettes from all over Staten Island to celebrate with us, that is a true sign that we are on the right path. All of this would not be possible without active members, supportive Officers, caring District Deputies and helpful Past Presidents, thank you all. I would like to especially thank my Officers for their help and involvement during my term, your opinions and ideas were always considered and appreciated.

While being President involves work and time, what I have received from my Presidency far outweighs the time and effort I put into Manresa Columbiettes. I want to thank you all for providing me the opportunity to serve my community, and be able to grow and experience many wonderful things. I have met and made friends with many amazing men and women as a result of my being your President. I was able to interact and forge friendships with many of you, which I know will last a lifetime due to our common bond of fellowship and good works. As your President I was hon-ored to attend Mass at Madison Square Garden offered by Pope Francis, this was a once in a lifetime experience and I have the Columbiettes to thank for that spiritual milestone that will live with me always.

I am confident that incoming President Maria O’Brien and her team of Officers will continue to build and grow our Aux-iliary. I look forward to see where the next two years will take us all! I also offer my counsel as Past President anytime, if asked. I was lucky to be able to reach out to Past Presidents for any help and they always provided me positive sug-gestions. I would consider it an honor to do the same.

In closing I would like to thank you all for believing in me as President of Manresa Columbiettes and I hope that I have

been worthy of your confidence. I would also like to express my deep gratitude to my amazing husband, Jim and our

family for their patience and understanding when I spent many evenings out attending this or that event.

God Bless,

Cathy Gonzalez, President

PROTECTING YOUR PAYCHECK

For most of us, the idea of not working is an exciting one. We relish weekends and vacations. We look forward to holidays and special occasions. We plan for retirement and count down the num-ber of days until we arrive at the freedom that we have planned for so deliberately. But what if the end of work comes not with freedom, but with surprise? What if the end of work comes with an illness or an accident that prevents us from doing our job? Will we be prepared? Can we be? With the help of the Knights of Columbus, members and their families can. We welcome retire-ment because we have planned for it. We know when it is coming, we know what it will take to

get there, and we know what we will need when it arrives. But how can we plan for something unexpected? How can we know what we will need when we do not know what will happen? Disability insurance is often dismissed by working men and women because they think their jobs are fairly safe. Their lives are fairly healthy. Disability — they say — is simply something they will never experience. The statistics tell a different story. According to the United States government, a staggering 1 in 4 of today’s 20-year-olds will become disabled before reaching the age of 67.* The nature of the job is irrelevant. According to the Social Security Administration, 95 percent of all disabling illnesses and accidents happen outside of the workplace.** Consider a typical male, age 35, a non-smoker, who works at an office job with some outdoor responsibilities and leads a very healthy lifestyle. He has a 21 percent chance of being injured or becoming ill and unable to work for three months or longer prior to retirement.*** And what happens once that occurs? What happens if your last paycheck is really your last paycheck? If your illness or injury is among the 95 percent that happen outside of work, workers’ compensation will be of no as-sistance to you. If you plan to rely on the government, you may find that you are among the 64 percent of Americans — including severely disabled Americans — who do not receive any assistance from the government or governmental programs, including Medicare, Social Security and supplemental Security Insurance.**** But the situation does not need to be that desperate. Your membership in the Knights of Columbus gives you and your eligible family members exclusive access to disability income insurance that can help safeguard your paycheck. With Knights of Columbus Disability Income Insurance, you can help make sure that you continue to earn an income, even when you cannot work. Our disability income insurance is designed to be flexible so that, working with your brother Knight field agent, you can customize it to fit your needs. You choose the monthly benefit amount that’s right for you, the elimination period that makes the most sense, and the maximum benefit period for your policy. And, by purchasing a disability income insurance policy from the Knights of Columbus, you have the added security of knowing that you are doing business with an unapologetically Catholic company that makes sure its investments do not violate Church teaching and which has been repeatedly recognized as a “World’s Most Ethical” company. ***** You owe it to yourself and to your family to make sure that your financial future is secure, regardless of what happens. Don’t be caught off guard by surprises. Be on guard and be prepared. Talk to your Knights of Columbus field agent today to learn how easy and affordable disability income insurance can be.
