We are pleased to introduce Shawn Feely. Shawn joined the Canadian Red Cross as the Provincial Director for Manitoba on April 23, 2012.

Shawn brings to the Red Cross 19 years of leadership experience where he guided multi-sector and multi-cultural networks,

government departments and companies. While working with several First Nation and Aboriginal organizations, as well as all levels of government, Shawn gained experience in strategic planning, policy development, and stewardship of organizations, as well as the delivery, monitoring and evaluation of programs. Most recently, Shawn spent more than 10 years leading IMPACT, the injury prevention centre of the Children’s Hospital in Manitoba. His main role centred on the promotion of strategic and coordinated evidence-based responses to the problem of injuries.

In addition to Shawn’s work experience, he holds a Master of

Arts in Leadership and Training, as well as certifi cates in Management Studies and Adult Education.

Please join us in welcoming Shawn to the Canadian Red Cross. We are excited to have him leading our Canadian Red Cross team in Manitoba!

For those families who have not been able to return home since the 2011 Manitoba Floods, buying school supplies became even more of a hardship. Our partner, the Manitoba Association of Native Firefi ghters (MANFF) brought this to our attention, and we quickly moved into action. The Red Cross understands that a key factor in recovering from a disaster is rebuilding one’s social capital, and for children, this is

even more critical.

In total, Red Cross staff and volunteers created 150 backpacks,

each equipped with essential school supplies (16 various items in total). The Canadian Red Cross bought the required supplies, with help from Walmart employees who had already picked out and set aside the items. It was a fantastic team effort and we are truly thankful to everyone who participated.

MANFF picked up the backpacks on September 5 and distributed them to the children.

I am impressed with the high

level of respect people have for the work of Red Cross, and I fully appreciate the complexity of this organization. I extend an open

Gone are the days of dismal chances of survival for cardiac arrest victims, and gone are the days of performing CPR with little or no expectation of the victim surviving.

This was the hopeful news staff and volunteers with the Canadian Red Cross, among other participants, heard loud and clear at the 2012 Emergency Cardiovascular Care Update Conference held in September in Orlando, Florida.

At the conference, participants heard from survivors; many shared stories of when they ‘died’ and were revived, thanks to the quick efforts of bystanders. These survivors ranged from 12-year-

olds to senior citizens. Despite the age difference, they all had one thing in common: they are all alive due to the quick thinking of bystanders, CPR and the use of an Automated External Defi brillator (AED) – a device that is available for use by the general public that helps in resuscitating heart attack victims.

Open heart surgeons spoke at

the conference, emphasizing the importance of teaching CPR and the use of AEDs to everyone around the world. A mass CPR training event was organized during the conference week, training nearly 2,000 people who now have the skills to save lives.

With your help, we can truly make an impact in ensuring survival rates continue to climb in Canada for sudden cardiac arrest victims.

With the support of RBC Royal Bank, the Canadian Red Cross led a province-wide anti-bullying movement with 130 schools and 76 communities. More than 8,550 youth and adults wore pink shirts to raise awareness about the issues surrounding bullying in schools.

To add to the excitement, one lucky school was to be chosen to have an RBC Olympian visit their

school. Many schools rose to the challenge, and the decision was not easily made. In the end, we had a tie, resulting in two winners!

One of the winners was Meadow’s School in Brandon, that received a visit from a member of the 2008 Women’s World Championa curling team, Jill Offi cer. The other winner was the Manitoba School for the Deaf, that received a visit from Jared Funk, winner of multiple medals in Wheelchair Rugby at the Paralympic Games.

Students in these schools went above and beyond to help put an end to bullying. Older students from Meadow’s School went to each classroom to talk to the younger students about the history of the Day of Pink and worked tirelessly to implement an anti-bullying environment,

while students from The Manitoba School for the Deaf submitted a video highlighting their inspiring efforts.

At recess it was observed that when the students went outside

they did not go run and play… they all stood in a big circle and talked about how there should be no

bullying at school. In summary, we felt that indicated the awesome

impact of the event!

Our second annual Power of Humanity Gala, presented by Manitoba Lotteries, was a resounding success! On May 24, 2012, more than 200 guests fi lled the Crystal Ballroom at the Fort Garry Hotel in Winnipeg to honour this year’s recipients: Humanitarian of the Year, Mr. Albert El Tassi, and our Young Humanitarian of the Year, Sierra Noble, who treated the crowd to a beautiful and inspiring musical performance.

The funds from the gala enable the Canadian Red Cross to enhance all the work we do, and have a signifi cant impact on the programs and services we deliver

throughout our province. From helping families in Manitoba recover from devastating fl oods and house fi res, to educating newcomers to Canada about injury prevention, to delivering anti-bullying education in our schools, we are always aiming to deliver the power of humanity wherever it is needed.

Sierra Noble, the Canadian Red Cross Manitoba Aboriginal Ambassador, will share her distinctive musical gifts to help raise awareness around the important work of the Red Cross and, in turn, raise funds to further provide programs in First Nations communities.

Mark Monday, January 7, 2013, on your calendars as Sierra Noble will be joined by special guests and the winners of Canada’s Got Talent, Sagkeeng’s Finest, at McPhillips Station Casino in Winnipeg. This three-person traditional dance team from Sagkeeng First Nation in Manitoba will truly delight and

inspire. All proceeds will go to the Aboriginal Outreach Work of the Canadian Red Cross.

The Red Cross’s Aboriginal Outreach Program delivers educational training and workshops such as Injury Prevention, Water Safety & Swimming Lessons, Walking the Prevention Circle: Violence and Abuse Prevention to First Nations peoples.
