School Council AGM - On Monday March 20th our School Council will hold its monthly meeting at 7.30pm in the staffroom.

This will commence with the AGM which will include the appointment of office bearers for the following 12 months – all Mano community members are welcome to our AGM.

Planning week and changes to specialist program for week 8 - Next week will see some changes to the specialist subject timetables, as teams of classroom teachers are accessing extended periods of planning time together.

This allows staff to further plan together in teams (Prep, Juniors, Middles and Seniors), especially for an agreed curriculum plan for term 2.

As we audit and adjust our curriculum in line with the new Victorian Curriculum (http://victoriancurriculum.vcaa.vic.edu.au/) in teaching teams, we are also very mindful of the necessity to report at mid-year with precision and confidence.

Mid-year Student Reports will be issued to parents on Friday June 23rd (second last week of term 2) with the following week seeing Student Led Conferences being conducted.

Mindfulness at Mano - This year we are collectively enhancing our approach to positive mental health strategies – especially focusing upon the 3 key elements of resilience: mindfulness, empathy and gratitude.

In classrooms this can look different at different ages and may incorporate the use of 2 very powerful apps: Smiling Minds and Go Noodle – check them out if you have time; they are both free.

Smiling Mind aims to build happier, healthier and more compassionate people. Some classes are using mindfulness meditation programs (often just after lunch) which are designed to assist students to calm themselves in readiness for the last hour of learning for the school day.

Cadbury Chocolate boxes – Mano Easter fundraiser - A big thank you to families who are able to support this activity. Money collected from sales is due back prior to the end of term – Friday March 31st.

There are a small number of additional boxes should any families feel capable of taking another box. Contact Anna in the General Office if interested in doing so.

Friendship Garden - Our Friendship Garden is soon to be planted up with a variety of plants, helping to create a special place in our school grounds.

Students will be encouraged to ‘use’ the garden as a place to meet with friends and to support others who are looking for a friend.

I know that some Grade 5 students will meet here with their Prep buddies at morning playtimes and lunchtimes.

Holiday program from Mano during upcoming holidays – Team Holiday - Again this upcoming term break will see Team Holiday offering a range of activities to local families.

Details can be accessed via their website: http://www.teamholiday.com.au/

Select ‘Chose your program’ and then Manifold Heights for specific details re what’s on offer for each day.

Advanced notice of term 2 pupil free day – FRIDAY APRIL 21st - On the Friday of the first week of term 2. all Mano staff will be engaged in a full day of professional learning around improving writing outcomes for our students.

We will be joined by some colleagues from other schools on this day.

This PD day will focus upon the Big Write and VCOP. These are designed to bring the fun back into writing, to make children want to write and to be continuously challenged throughout the writing journey.

Through games, activities, writing tasks, conversations and discussions, students learn not only where their abilities lie in a fun and engaging way, but also the steps they need to take, in order to continue to improve.

This promises to be a very worthwhile enhancement to our current literacy program and comes highly recommended by other schools. Barry Rowland Principal

SWPBS News

For our new families to Mano, SWPBS is our school wide framework to support and teach positive behaviour within our school and

community. The framework is built on a behaviour matrix and three values (respect, safety and responsibility) that teach positive

behaviour and reward this behaviour. Recently a parent matrix was sent home for families to help support and model positive behaviour

at home. As teachers we teach and model the behaviour at school every day. With the support from home we will only strengthen and

develop the positive behaviour our children demonstrate.

Thank you, Amy Barr and the SWPBS Team.

Are you struggling to get your student to school? Daily school attendance is important for young people to succeed in education and to ensure they don’t fall behind both socially and developmentally. Young people who regularly attend school and complete Year 12 or an equivalent qualification have better health outcomes, better employment outcomes, and higher incomes across their lives. School participation is important as it maximises life opportunities for young people, by providing them with education and support networks. School helps people to develop important skills, knowledge and values which set them up for further learning and participation in their community. The school places great importance in all students being at school on time, every day the school is open for instruction. We understand that sometimes getting your child to school may be difficult and the school is very happy to work with you to improve your child’s attendance.

Manifold Heights Primary School Week beginning13

th March, 2017

Coordinator: Jessica Kevelham

Hi Parents, A lot has been happening in the OSHC this past week once again. Jen, Isla, Maeko, Emily, Ella, Juliet, Matilda and Harriet enjoyed creating some amazing animal masks. Caleb, Oliver, Owen, Sai, Sasha, Will and Jasper spent some of their time building a bay blade stadium using the large blocks. Lego has been a big hit this week. Slade and Arlin finished building their large aeroplane. Ella and Maja created a small town with people and Will created a large ramp for the cars. All the children enjoyed watching the movie ‘enchanted’ Wednesday and having some time to relax. Star of the week this week goes to Arlin Benson for working hard on creating his lego plane. Jess and Staff.
