OUR VISIONManhattan Country School envisions its students as future leaders whose shared experiences in learning and activism inspire them to champion excellence and justice, compassion and peace, and the rights of all people to racial, economic, gender, environmental, and educational equity.

OUR MISSIONReflecting the vision of the Civil Rights Movement, Manhattan Country School teaches students in a community with no racial majority and broad economic diversity. Our goals for students are academic excellence, intellectual freedom, social awareness, self-confidence, and firsthand knowledge of the natural world. MCS is unique among NYC independent schools in having a Catskill-based 180-acre working farm integral to the curriculum and a sliding scale for tuition.

2011-2012 was a year-long celebration of Manhattan Country School’s 45th anniversary. What began in 1966 as the dream of Gus and Marty Trowbridge and a few fellow pioneers is now a living

example of what can be accomplished with a meaningful mission and the dedication

of countless people over nearly five decades.

There were many highlights during the year, but a few stand out:

The faculty organized a 45th Anniversary Teach-In, featuring sixty workshops taught by MCS staff, parents, and alumni that immersed us in MCS’ past, present, and future.

The film, “45 Years of Impact,” documented MCS’ impact on students and alumni, past and present teachers, urban educational models, sustainability and environmental stewardship, and activism and social justice curriculum. Watch the video: www.bit.ly/VTWWQN

Honoring Frank Roosevelt, longtime MCS trustee, parent/grandparent and architect of our sliding-scale tuition program; and alumna Michele Hatchette ’01, co-founder of Harlem Seeds (a program that educates youth about food and nutrition) at our spring benefit, Big Night Out!

45th anniversary recognition for MCS came from places as diverse as the Harvard Business School Club of New York Community Partners, Progressive Educators’ Network Conference (PEN), Gilder Lehrman Affiliates Program, New York State Green Leader Schools Program, and the Catskill Center for Conservation and Development.

The Annual Report is our way of acknowledging the generosity and impact of our donors and how their gifts make a difference at MCS every year. Much of what MCS is being recognized for today would not have been possible without the annual support of generations of parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends.

As we look ahead, we see the path to a sustainable future and imagine a continuing partnership with donors who share our belief that society gains from small, mission-driven schools that embrace a public mission. Working together we can ensure a more sustainable future in our classrooms, at our farm and in our communities.

Manhattan Country School’s academic program blends exploration with equity, builds students’ cultural capital and ensures they have the tools to be sharp critical thinkers, creative problem solvers and engaged citizens. Our curriculum takes full

advantage of the multiracial, multicultural, and economic diversity of our community,

focusing on how people can work together to effect change, encourage discussion,

research, and collaboration. MCS was recently chosen to host the national 2015

Progressive Educator Network (PEN) conference due to our legacy of developing

curriculum that addresses diversity, sustainability, social justice, and partnerships

with public schools. Your generous contribution to the Annual Fund supports

professional and curriculum development, a richer academic program and a more

sustainable future for students and teachers at MCS and beyond.

Over the past 46 years MCS has: Provided classroom training for more than 900 student teachers from NYC-based teaching colleges and universities.

Attracted the interest of more than 4,500 educators and administrators from across the nation and the world who have visited MCS to observe and learn about our mission and curriculum.

“ This week you are going to run the farm...” is often said to students upon arrival at the MCS Farm in Roxbury, N.Y. The natural landscape is their classroom and they learn to master skills needed to maintain our 180 acre farm. During farm trips,

students feed and care for animals and learn to make original textiles from sheep

to loom. They plant, harvest and cook vegetables for their own meals, collect sap

from trees to make syrup, monitor the solar production of the electricity that powers

our farm, and learn about environmental issues and their impact on people and

wildlife. This work helps to build self-confidence, instills a connection to local

communities and the environment and provides firsthand knowledge of the natural

world. Since 1966, more than 7,620 students have learned how to live more

sustainable lives at the MCS Farm. More than 6,700 of these students were from

public, charter and independent schools in New York City and the local Catskill

area. Your generous contribution to the Annual Fund supports our farm-based

education program and a sustainable future for the MCS Farm.

Since the installation of solar panels at the MCS Farm in 2009, 64.20 tons of carbon emissions have been saved.

In one year, the MCS Farm: Produces 1,000 gallons of milk

Serves 456 Farm-to-table meals

Supplies nearly 1,000 pounds of beef for school lunches at 7 East 96th Street

IN OUR

COMMUNITY

8

9971.indd 8 1/23/13 2:50 PM

Through curriculum and practice, Manhattan Country School students are cultivated to be agents of change who bring passion, perspective and intellect to problem solving – in the classroom and in the world. Engaged citizenship begins in our youngest

classes where there is an emphasis on community and shared responsibility. Time is

devoted to community building and developing language and practicing methods

for helping a classroom run smoothly. As children grow older and transition from

lower to upper school, the notions of community and responsibility are expanded

as students are required to research, debate, write, fundraise, and seek organizational

partnerships in relation to social and environmental justice issues impacting

communities - locally and globally. Gifts to Manhattan Country School support the

ongoing education and development of students who graduate as confident leaders

and engaged citizens committed to a more sustainable future and to building

community across race, class, and difference.

For 25 years, MCS’ eighth graders have led marches in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Each year, students choose a theme and march route and then deliver speeches on contemporary civil

rights issues as they march through the streets of New York City on the MLK holiday.

In recent years, MCS’ seventh and eighth graders have lobbied for marriage equality,

the Dream Act, and created anti-bullying education materials as part of an annual

week-long activism project.

How Your Support Makes a Difference: Because Manhattan Country School maintains a commitment to economic diversity three times greater than the average independent school nationally, our tuition revenue only covers approximately 70% of our annual operating expenses.

Meeting our budget each year depends on a combination of fundraising streams including gifts to the Annual Fund, income from annual community fundraising events and MCS’ investment fund, and renting our facilities on 96th Street and at the MCS Farm.

MCS would not be here today without the continued generosity and support of dedicated parents and grandparents, alumni, former parents, and friends. Thank you to all of those who made a gift, participated in an online auction or attended, contributed to or volunteered at a fundraising event last year. Your gifts and support help to sustain and strengthen our program, our mission and our steadfast commitment to a more sustainable future for all.

Volunteerism and In-Kind Giving

2011-2012 was an outstanding year for volunteerism and in-kind giving with scores of individuals and families contributing an unprecedented level of passion, creativity, and community spirit to the school’s fundraising efforts. To those of you who served on a committee or as an event volunteer or stuffed envelopes for a mailing, or prepared food for an event, or picked up/delivered supplies, or contributed an item or service, or supported the 7th and 8th graders’ activism trip, we humbly thank you for your generosity and thoughtfulness. Your outstanding commitment to the school’s mission and community is deeply appreciated and valued.
