Doing GoodEducation and Cancer appeared to be the themes of the day. Multiple organizations are doing good to promote learning and health, and Man-hattan Beach Rotarians just keep showing up in many of them.

June 19 — Firefighter of the Year. MBFD Firefighter of the year award and Craft Talk by John Rhind.

Save The DateJune 17 — Demotion. Our President Shannon will be the guest of honor at the Knights of Columbus Hall. This is President Shannon’s big night!June 26 — Rotary Book Club. The book this month is Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari. Our host is Rick Farrell and our moderator is Duke Winser.

Teacher AwardsIt was Monday, June 5, 2017, and President Shannon Ryan arrived with cupcakes for the monthly birthday kids……David Gendron honored a number of our Interact graduating seniors, leading off with a mini-commencement speech advising them to use sunscreen, floss, honor their parents—you know, the basics…..Next came our annual teacher awards. Mike Matthews kicked things off after polling us to find out that a large majority of the club has sent kids to Manhattan Beach schools. Then, as we do annually, principals from each of our schools (Pre, 5 elementary, MBMS, and Costa) honored each school’s teacher of the year, with lovely sentiments, even poetry.

Programs

Rotarian of the Month Mike Doell Rotarian of the Month, the last for President Shannon’s year, was, in absentia, Mike Doell…..Herb Trachtenberg presented a Paul Harris +2 to Ed Kushins…..Ken Deemer invited us to attend the local version of Social Venture Partners’ Fast Pitch program…..President Shannon thanked John Gardner for organizing the year’s awards programs, and John in turn shared some Rotary Reads thank-you notes.

Life EventsIan Jackson reported that Larry Wolf is making strong progress and encouraged us to visit….And Bill Bloomfield has a very favorable prog-nosis as he enters upon an 8-week protocol of chemo and radiation for throat cancer…..Dan Saks lost a good friend to cancer, and is grateful to Tour de Pier for its support of cancer research….Jim McFarland’s wife has successfully completed chemo….Jim Hunter reported that his daughter’s and son-in-law’s Tour de Pier raised a record $1.3 million.

Happy DollarsSteve Murillo started Crossfit….Jason Wallace enjoyed hosting his dine-around….Les Silverman thanked Herb Trachtenberg for hosting a dine-around…..Jim Hunter thanked President Shannon for hosting a dine-around….And Jim, by the way, contributed a major gift to the successful MBEF Wine Auction….And Jim’s grandson received extraor-dinary honors for his 5th Grade group’s Odyssey of the Mind…..Jan Rhees contributed $1000 to the club in honor of President Shannon’s presidency…..Mike Matthews’ son graduated middle school. Mike ex-pressed gratitude for both the Wine Auction and the Teacher Awards….Kathleen Terry celebrated the graduation of this year’s Leadership Manhattan Beach Class (and their successful renovation of the Santa Float) and announced that the next class has 27 members.
