ABSTRACT
This study aimed to determine the National Achievement
Test (NAT) performance of grade 6 pupils in Mathematics in
the district of Valladolid, Division of Negros occidental
from school year 2011–2012 to 2013-2014.
The descriptive method of research was used in this
study. There were two hundred fifty three (253) Grade 6
pupils from the eight (8) schools in the District of
Valladolid, Division of Negros Occidental. For the teacher
respondents, eleven (11) Mathematics teachers were taken in
the study. In data gathering, the researcher made used of
two (2) sets of questionnaires: one (1) for pupil’s profile
which includes: gender, economic status, study habit,
attitude towards Mathematics and technological influence;
and one (1) for teachers profile which includes: gender,
educational qualifications, length of service, seminars and
trainings attended, and styles and strategies in teaching
Mathematics. The NAT results were taken from eight (8)
xiv
schools in the district of Valladolid, Division of Negros
Occidental.
The data were analyzed using the following statistical
tools: frequency and percent distribution, mean, mode, F-
test and chi-squared test.
It was found out that the female pupils outnumbered the
male pupils. The family income of Grade 6 pupils was very
low. Grade 6 pupils have good study habit and have positive
attitude towards Mathematics, and commonly used cellular
phones.
It was found out that, Grade 6 female teachers
outranked male teachers. Most teacher-respondents have
earned Master’s units in the graduate school and have been
teaching Mathematics for 20 years and above and within the
range of 5-9 years, and majority of them attended school-
based in-service trainings and seminars conducted by school
and division. They utilized different styles and strategies
in teaching Mathematics.
There was no significant relationship between National
Achievement Test (NAT) performance of the Grade 6 pupils in
Mathematics and gender, economic status and study habits in
the District of Valladolid, Division of Negros Occidental.
However, there was significant relationship between
National Achievement Test (NAT) performance of the Grade 6
xv
pupils in Mathematics and attitude toward Mathematics in the
District of Valladolid, Division of Negros Occidental.
There was no significant relationship between National
Achievement Test (NAT) performance of the Grade 6 pupils in
Mathematics and gender, economic status and study habits in
the District of Valladolid, Division of Negros Occidental.
There was significant relationship between the National
Achievement Test (NAT) performance of Grade 6 pupils in
Mathematics and Grade 6 teachers’ gender.
There was no significant relationship between the
National Achievement Test (NAT) performance of Grade 6
pupils in Mathematics and Grade 6 teachers’ educational
qualification.
There was a significant relationship between the
National Achievement Test (NAT) performance of Grade 6
pupils in Mathematics and Grade 6 teachers’ length of
service and seminars and trainings attended.
There was a significant difference on the National
Achievement Test performance of the Grade 6 pupils in
Mathematics in 8 schools in the Division of Negros
Occidental.
