Basic ways to ask and tell one’s nationality

• nǐ shì nǎ guó rén? —— wǒ shì zhōngguó rén?

你是哪国人？—— 我是中国人• tā shì nǎ guó rén? —— tā shì mǎláixīyà rén

她是哪国人？ —— 她是马来西亚人• wanglei shì nǎ guórén? — wanglei shì xīnjiāpō rén

王磊是哪国人？ —— 王磊是新加坡人

的（ de ） :of

a noun or a pronoun may be used to show possession, the structural partical 的 must be used between the attributive and the central word ,

e.g nǐ de hùzhào lǎoshī de shū

wǒ de hùzhào wǒ mèimei de shū

tā de hùzhào fēiyǎ de shū

Lesson Two

Question with the interrogative particle 吗（ ma ）

• nǐshì xuésheng ma ?

• tā shì mǎláixīyà rén ma?

• nǐ búshì lǎoshī ma?

• A simple question is formed by adding the interrogative particle to the end of a declarative sentence,either affiramative or negative.

The negative form

• wǒ shì lǎoshī --------wǒ búshì lǎoshī

• wǒ xǐhuān hànyǔ-----wǒ bù xǐhuān hànyǔ.

• Usually,the negative is formed by adding 不 (bu) before the verb

The tones of 不• When 不 stands alone,it is pronounced in

the fourth tone.when followed by a fourth tone,it becomes a syllable of the second tone and its tone-mark has to be given accordingly

Question with the particle 吧 (ba)

nǐ bú shì xuésheng ba ?

nǐ shì mǎláixīyà rén ba ?

nǐ bù xǐhuān hànyǔ ba?

“ 吧” question will be used when speaker already has a certain estimation but is still not quite sure about the thing he is asking and expects the listener to confirm it.

Basic ways to ask and tell one’origin

1.nǐshì nǎr rén? —— wǒ shì shànghǎi rén.

你是哪儿人？ —— 我是上海人。2.nǐ shì mǎláixīyà shénme dìfāng rén?

你是马来西亚什么地方人？ —— wǒ shì mǎláixīyà jílóngpō rén

我是马来西亚吉隆坡人。3.nǐ cóng shénme dìfāng lái ? 你从什么地方来？—— wǒ cóng tàiguó màngǔ lái. 我从泰国曼谷来。

但 (dàn):but

e.g

1. wǒ shì mǎláixīyà rén ,dàn wǒ māma búshì mǎláixīyà rén.

我是马来西亚人，但我妈妈不是马来西亚人。

2.wǒ xǐhuān hànyǔ,dàn wǒ búhuì shuō hànyǔ 。

我喜欢汉语，但我不会说汉语

从…来 (cóng…lái):come from

e.g

1.wǒ cóng zhōngguó guǎngdōng lái.

我从中国广东来。2.wǒ cóng sùshè guòlái.

我从宿舍过来。
