    Introduction

    Ni hao!

This CD and booklet was originally created for an adult workshop we ran for some

non-Mandarin speaking teachers at a public school in Sydney. In creating the CD

and Workbook, we have also been able to share its value with other learners

including our Mandarin Stars parent community who have found it of great value to

both themselves and also in reinforcing Mandarin listening and speaking skills for

    their own children.

The aim of the CD is to teach strong listening and speaking skills in Mandarin so that

you can develop the language skills and confidence to start conversing with your own

children and family and social environment.

We encourage you to practice the phrases and vocabulary taught as much as

possible in your every day lives, with your children, Chinese speaking friends and

even colleagues who speak/ are learning Mandarin too!

The CD accompanying this Workbook contains all the phrases and vocabulary taught.

Feel free to copy the CD to your sound system of choice. We suggest that you play

this CD as much as possible, so that you can develop an ear for the differing sounds

and intonations of the phrases and vocabulary that you will learn.

    An introduction to Pin Yin

    Overview

Pinyin is a way to represent Chinese characters and express the sounds in the

Chinese language using the alphabet. There are other systems to express Mandarin,

but Pinyin is the most accepted and widely used. Once you learn Pinyin you will

know how to pronounce any word in Mandarin using a Chinese dictionary. Pinyin is

also the most common way to input Chinese characters into a computer. Although

Pinyin and English both use the Roman alphabet, man y letters are not

expressed with the same sounds that English uses.

    Tones

Words in Mandarin that have the same pronunciation can have different meanings

depending on how the word is said. The "tone" of a word describes how the pitch of

the speaker's voice changes as the word is said. There are four "tones" in

Mandarin which you will practice in the workshop. The tones are represented in

pinyin by marks above the words.

    Saying Chinese words

To help students of Chinese, there is a standard system called pinyin which spells

out the sounds of the words. Almost all Chinese language courses and Chinese-

English dictionaries use pinyin. Most of the sounds in pinyin are the same as English

words, but there are some sounds in Chinese which are not like anything in English,

and you can see how to say them on the page opposite.

In Mandarin Chinese there are four tones, which means that the vowel sounds a e i o

u, or groups of vowels, can be said in different ways:

The first tone is high and level. In pinyin it is written ¯ as in mā (mother).

The second tone starts lower and then rises. It is written ´ ,as in chá (tea).

The third tone starts mid-range, falls and then rises. It is written ˘as in gŭ (drum)

The fourth tone starts high and then falls. It is written as ` , as in dà (big).

Some vowel sounds, often in the second syllable of a word, are pronounced without

a particular tone and so are written without a tone mark. It is important to use the

right tone as the same word can have quite different meanings when said with

different tones – for instance, mā means “mother”, but mă means “horse”.

    5

The best way to learn how to say Chinese words is to listen to someone who can

speak Chinese and repeat what you hear.

    Reading pinyin

Read the words as if you were reading English, but:

h has a harsher sound, like the Scottish ch in loch

q sounds like the ch in cheer

x sounds like the sh in shy

c sounds like the ts in cats

z sounds like the ds in heads

The next four are pronounced with your tongue rolled back:

ch sounds like the ch in cheer ,

sh sounds like the sh in shy ,

zh sounds like the dge in fudge

r sounds like the r in ring .

a sounds like the a in car

an sounds like the an in can’t

e sounds like the e in the or mother ,

en sounds like the en in shaken ,

i can sound like the ee in seen , or like the i in shirt , but

    in sounds like the in in fin ;

o sounds like the o in more , and

ong sounds like the ung in sung , but longer, more like soong .

u sounds like the oo in too

ü for this sound, round your lips to say oo , then try saying ee

    Important Notes I:

How to say ‘Excuse me’ in Mandarin

There are different ways to say ‘Excuse me’ according to the context in which you

are asking. There are essentially three ways to say ‘Excuse me’.

    1. If you are putting a request out to a stranger or unfamiliar person and when you want to ask something for permission politely, one would say:

    qǐng 问

    wèn。

E.g.: Excuse me, does this bus go to the railway station?

Excuse me, can I park here?

    2. If you want to interrupt politely, one would say: 对

    duì 不

    bu 起

E.g.: Excuse me, can I say something?

    3. If you want to excuse past somebody for example, squeeze past somebody’s

chair) or apologize for sneezing, one would say: 不

    bù 好

    hǎo 意

    yì 思

    si

E.g.: Excuse me, can I get past?

    Excuse me for my sneezing.

    Saying ‘You’ and ‘Your’

There are 2 ways to say ‘You’ and ‘Your’ in Mandarin.

1.There is the singular form, where ‘You’ is 你

    nǐ, and ‘Your’ is 你

    nǐ 的

    de

2.There is the plural form, where ‘You’ is 你

    nǐ 们

    men, and ‘Your’ is 你

    nǐ 们

    men 的

    de

An explanation of how Pin Yin is presented for this booklet

The Pinyin of a word should not be split, for example, the Pinyin for ‘Good afternoon’

should be written as “ 下xià

    午wǔ

    好hǎo

    ”.

Note that there is no space between “ 下xià

    ” and “ 午wǔ

    ” because “ 下xià

    午wǔ

    “ means

    “afternoon” and “ 好hǎo

    ”means “good”.

However, to make the reading of Pinyin easier for our learners in this early stage of

the workshop, we have decided to split the sound of a Pinyin word so that learners

will find it easier to read and thus pronounce.

    For example:

‘How can I get to…. ‘ should be correctly written in Pinyin as:

    请qǐng

    问wèn

    我wǒ

    要yào

    怎zěn

    样yàng

    去qù

    …? (How can I get to…)

However, to simplify learning, pronunciation and the reading of Pinyin in this booklet,

we have broken up the sounds of the words as follows:

    请qǐng

    问wèn

    我wǒ

    要yào

    怎zěn

    样yàng

    去qù

    …? (How can I get to…)
