W hen organizers inthe tiny foothillstown of Newcastle

held their first MountainMandarin Festival 20 yearsago, they never imaginedthat it would grow to thethree-day event that now attracts 25-30,000 peoplefrom throughout the WestCoast.

In fact it quickly outgrew the town center and isnow held at the GoldCountry Fairgrounds inneighboring Auburn.

The original NewcastleMandarin Festival wasstarted by Joanne Neft onbehalf of the Newcastle Area Business Association.

The group wanted to high-light a unique, locally-grown agricultural prod-uct with a celebration that would contribute to theeconomy of the area.Mandarins have beengrown in the foothills sur-rounding Newcastle sincethe late 1800s. The firstcommercial mandarinendeavors were started inthe 1950s by Frank Aguilar,Ed Pilz and Harold Struble, and there are now morethan 80 growers in PlacerCounty.

The first year of the festi-val, there were approxi-mately 1,500 visitors and ahandful of mandarin

growers. When the festivalbegan to impact the ability of the Newcastle down-town merchants to con-duct business and parking became more and moredifficult, the festival wasmoved to the Gold Coun-try Fairgrounds.

Today the MountainMandarin Festival is athree-day affair, boastsmore than 200 vendors, provides live entertain-ment, cooking demonstra-tions and you can expectto find thousands of thoseorange mesh bags filled with tasty mandarinoranges ready to takehome.

When Joanne Neftstarted the NewcastleMandarin Festival 20years ago, it was tohighlight a unique,locally-grown agricul-tural product in away that would con-tribute to the localeconomy. The firstevent drew 1,500visitors to downtownNewcastle.

The Sierra foothills are dot-ted with orange in the win-ter from the beautiful man-darin trees bursting with fruit.

Mandarin season kicks off with the Mountain MandarinFestival, celebrating 20 magical years, Nov. 22 through 24 at theGold Country Fairgrounds in Auburn. But the magic doesnt

    stop there.Following the festival each

year, the Mountain MandarinGrowers Association (MMGA)hosts Orchard Days the first andthird weekends in December atparticipating member orchardsfrom Penryn, Newcastle andLoomis to Lincoln and Auburn.

This year Orchard Days takesplace December 7, 8, 21 and 22.The event features the sale of fresh mandarins and man-darin-based products along with crafters, artists, wine tast-ing, food, farm animals and funfor the whole family.

Many MMGA memberorchards welcome visitors daily throughout mandarin season, typically mid-Novemberthrough March, although theexact dates vary each year dueto the weather.

This year the crop is earlier

than it has been for several years and our trees are heavy with fruit due to the warmspring, said Tom Aguilar, own-er of Mandarin Hill Orchards, one of the oldest mandaringroves in Placer County. Sotherell be plenty of mandarinsfor the Mandarin Festival,Orchard Days and the holidays.Placer grown mandarins aremore flavorful because we letthem ripen on the trees andhand pick them to be sure they are ready to eat. Kids love thembecause they are sweet andeasy to peel, making them aperfect snack.

Mandarins have been a farm-ing tradition for more than 125 years in the Placer County foothills. Welsh settlers in the

town of Penryn planted the firstmandarin trees in the 1880s.Toms father, Frank Aguilar, along with Ed Pilz and HaroldStruble, planted mandarin treesin South Placer during the1950s. Together they purchaseda sizing machine and begansupplying fresh mandarins tolocal customers and grocery stores. Boxed mandarins soonbecame a much-anticipated giftthroughout the country and with soldiers in foreign wars.

Today, close to 40 mandaringrowers throughout PlacerCounty make up the MountainMandarin Growers Associa-

tion. The warm days and coolnights make this area a perfect

place to grow this sweet, seed-less, popular fruit.

Placer County is unique inthat our mandarin industry is

based in the foothills of theSierra Nevada Mountains, saidPlacer County AgriculturalCommissioner Josh Huntsinger. Our Mountain Mandarins aregenerally more flavorful and of a higher overall quality whencompared to fruit grown on thevalley floor. This high-quality fruit is something we are very proud of in our community. Welook forward to continuing theOrchard Days tradition this winter as a way to introducemore people to one of PlacerCountys premier crops.

As an added bonus, PlacerCounty Owari Satsuma man-

darins offer high concentra-tions of the cold fighting phyto-chemical synephrine, as report-ed in 2008 by the USDAs

Department of Agriculture andpublished in the Journal of Agri-cultural and Food Chemistry. According to the study of man-darins grown in the PlacerCounty orchards, synephrineconcentrations were found tobe up to six times higher thanvalues previously determinedfor orange juices. That makesPlacer grown Mountain Man-darins the perfect fruit for win-ter eating.

His innovative and high-energy brand of comedy and magic has earned him some of the industrys top awards and a reputation as one of the funniest and most original magicians working today.

Eric Buss is not a comedian telling jokes aboutairline food. He is not a magician wearing a

bright yellow leotard. Eric is an imaginative,

exciting performer with a knack for fun. Throughout his show,Eric Buss invites the audience into his world where hystericalantics are brought to life.

Eric loved making people laugh from the get-go and at 16 hemerged his passion for building with his love for magic tricks. Although most would agree that his gadgets are totally awe-some, its Erics personality that wins audiences over. His high-energy and hilarious act has been called pure art, pure mad-ness! It combines crazy inventions and Erics high-octane sug-ar rush of comedy into a non-stop ride of mischief and magicalgadgetry that most people could never imagine.
