Manchester Calendar Events Programme2012
To inform business sector planning around key events activity for 2012and identify opportunities for engagement and support
The continued utilisation of events as a growth driver in these challenging economic times is contingent on Manchester being able to create a justifiable, robust annual and events portfolio that is a mixture of established successful events, new events driven by commercial sector partnerships and investment, and the commission of national/international calibre events which the City Council and its partners will bring to Manchester.
The priority in the coming years must be to foster an entrepreneurial environment in which the City seeks
to define a new way of increasing events opportunities – and accepts a level of informed and calculated risk to leverage new streams of income to foster continued growth in the city region sector and to
capture ‘prize’ events that have significant global impact and longer term strategic returns on investment.
• The management of the events calendar and associated partnerships will deliver against the City Councils prioritisation for events to support community and economic growth.
• The events calendar will reflect the core values at the heart of Manchester’s identity – to improve community cohesion and sense of place and drive economic impact, supporting jobs and tourism.
• The calendar supports the economic growth sector of creative, culture, sports and media industries and is integral to the promotion of individual self-esteem, mutual respect and the creation of neighbourhoods of choice.
• The calendar and associated activities sustains neighbourhoods of pride and enriches the positive image of Manchester as a world class city – a place where there is always something going on.
• Events will improve measurement of their activity with more robust analysis of event participation, jobs created and economic impacts.

2012 Major Events Activities
Manchester Day A second successful Manchester Day was delivered (June 2011) – attracting £130k private sector sponsorship. Parade research commissioned revealed:
• 54% of those who attended the parade would not have visited Manchester if it had not been for the parade taking place.• All spectators agreed that the parade was enjoyable and entertaining (100% agree, 87% strongly agree).• Nearly all spectators agree that the parade is a good event for the City to hold (94%) and is an
event they would recommend to friends and family (87% strongly agree).• Nearly all spectators stated that they felt that the parade was excellent (77%) or good (21%) overall• Attracting an estimated audience of 45,000, it was estimated that over £1.2m additional spend was
generated above a normal weekend in the city centre.• The parade was a showcase for the City of Manchester, making not only regional but also national news. The Press Office identified 160 articles and reports nationwide and AVE of around £650K.
The Manchester Day Parade 2012 will be themed The Sky’s The Limit – A City Of Heroes and take place on Sunday 10th June 2012. Wider engagement with the event across the city is targeted.
Major Commercial Concerts - Stone Roses (220,000 attendees) and Parklife (70,000 attendees) confirmed- Major concerts at the Etihad Stadium – Coldplay, Bruce Springsteen.
Additional Major Events proposals in development- Launch of National Football Museum - Potential fan park - 2012 UEFA European Championships between June 8th and July 1st - Major music event with MTV linked to potential MTV EMA’s in 2014
Commercial Events - In addition to the allocated City Council investment, a key imperative is to drive revenue and maximise sponsorship opportunities around events and public realm usage to meet savings requirements and to reduce public sector funding.
Sponsorship - the development of a coherent strategy for sponsorship to enhance the programme delivery is a priority. A dedicated resource for commercial income and sponsorship development for events is to be put in place.
Commercial Partnership Programme Content - Alongside the direct income generation realised by the management of commercial events in the city centre spaces, agency links are also opening up opportunities to secure addition one off major events at no direct cost to the city eg Vodafone VIP F1 event which drew in an estimated 40,000 attendees on the August Bank Holiday in 2011.
