YOUR VIEWS
Play pays tribute tothose before usI attended the Centrepoint play, TheWar Artist, only a few days afterattending a local funeral.
The play was dominated by thedramatic developments around digginga war grave for soldiers killed in thefirst World War.
The heavily wrapped bodies withtaped together boots in the centre of thestage were a stark visual reminder ofwhat this was all about.
The funeral I later attended wasconcluded by family filling in the graveof their 89-year-old mother.
Both events were raw heart reachingscenes that made me want to knowmorein depth about those persons.
I truly believe we stand on theshoulders of those who have gone beforeus.
The frighteningly loud artillerynoise at the beginning of the play set thescene for a very sombre evening. Thecontrasting singing of birds was beauti-fully peaceful in comparison.
Recently my family have beeninvestigating a family member whowas wounded at the battle of the Sommeand came back to live in PalmerstonNorth.
The fact that many of our young menare buried in unmarked war graves farway and their loved ones will neverknow where they are buried is anincredibly sad story.
The only information many familiesreceived about their sons death was amere telegram.
We have a duty to keep alive thememories of our loved ones. This com-pelling piece of live performing art wasan experience to remember.

Cyber crime increaseprompts warning
A1705NZHPMHACKER4
ONLINE SAFETY: Cyber crime is on theincrease and shows no sign of abating.
PIC:SUPPLIED
By DALEWICKEN
Anational report showing an increase intargeted cyber crimehas led to awarningby a local IT expert.
PhilMartin ofDesktopTechnologyServices Limited (DTSL) dealswith cybercrime and says he iswell aware of theimportance of ensuring your computer andsmartphone are protected.
For a lot of people its an ambulance atthe bottomof the hill type scenario. Theydont do anything about it until theyve feltthe pain.
The study, released by softwarecompanySymantec, reported a 91 per centincrease in targeted cyber attacksfollowing an increase in 2012 of 42 per cent.
MrMartin says themost commonbranch of cyber crimehe dealswith ismalware, which are computerprogrammes designed to infiltrate anddamage computers.
Most of these come fromEasternEuropean countries and theyremade bypeoplewho justwant yourmoney. I had acouple come tomewhohad anewnotebook that hadnt had any security on itfor 18months. They thought therewassome sort ofmanufacturing issue butwedid some tests and found itwas riddledwithmalware.
Malware can often be lurking on acomputer for a length of time and activateswhen the user visits a certainwebsite suchas online banking. Criminals can thenaccess bank account details anduse theseformalicious purposes.
Cyber crime is also taking place onsocialmedia platforms.
Pages onFacebook like those local buyand sell ones can be dodgy because theydont ask for any credentials likeTradeMedoes, he said.
Online identity theft is the fastestgrowing area of crime across theworld,
according to Police. Its also difficult forpolice to investigate because of thegeographical boundaries and the fact thatonline activity can often be hard to trace.
Tips onhow to protect yourself: Invest in decent security software foryour computer, smartphone or any devicethat contains sensitivematerial. Dont give out personal informationover the phone, personally or viacomputers unless youknow the person ororganisation is legitimate. Neverwrite yourPIN for bank or creditcards on the cards or any document insideyourwallet. Dispose of personal information in asecuremanner. Check bank and credit card statementsfor unauthorised transactions. Reportanything strange to your bankimmediately. Bewary of howmuchpersonalinformation youpost publicly.

THINKINGCAPS: (Left to right)WillowAldrich, AimeeAlderidge, Sophie Smith, Courtney Rowe andCarolineWilliams troll the internet comparing different onesies.
Young minds tackle problemBy ALECIA ROUSSEAU
Agroup of ambitiousPalmerstonNorthGirls High studentsare in the process ofdeveloping a uniqueonesie, if they can findsomeone to produce it.
Five Year 13business studiesstudents have beengiven the task ofcreating a productthat solves aproblem. CarolineWilliams took the firststep by approachingQuinnsQuest, aFacebook page thatfollows seven-year-oldQuinnHautapu onher journeywithbrain cancer. The young girl and hermother, Ro, agreed a onesie that couldaccommodate IV lines and allow for lessexposure of a child in hospital would havemade their stay easier.
TeammemberAimeeAlderidge saidpermissionwas sought to use the idea andfrom there, they needed to decidewhatfeatures would accommodate the needs ofhospitalised children.
We have to think about findingmaterial that isnt too hot, or that doesnthave anymetal, she explained. It needsto be breathable but it also needs to becheap tomake.
The girlsmet Quinn andwith her help, drew their first draft of the design.
Itll be like your usual onesie but withalterations; therewill be domes for IVlines in the two arms, a bum flap for goingto the toilet and possibly somethingaround the tummy area, Sophie Smithsaid.
We know this is something thatsalways going to be needed becausechildren are always going into hospital.
The onesies will be designed for thoseaged four to 10 years old but the girls are
confident if it takes off they can extendtheir product line into teenagers oryounger children.
Were quite confident if wewant tomake it work, it will, Caroline said.
Were considering things like sign-upsheets in hospitals and creativewayswecan get them out.
Serene is their chosen company nameas it stands for what they aim to create,Sophie said.
Its all about comfort and being calm;thats what wewant people to feel.
WillowAldrich said productionwasdependant upon finding amanufacturerwho could produce the onesies at a lowcost.
We are trying to keep costs down asmuch as possible because the cost ofproduction determines howmuchwewillsell one for. If you can offer Serene help withproduction, please contact them via theirFacebook page www.facebook.com/SerenePNGHS or contact their businessstudies teacher, Mrs Merwood on (06)357-9194. A fundraiser will also be held atPioneer NewWorld onMay 17.

BREATHTAKING: AdamChambers on his way throughWaiau Pass1870metreshigh.
By ALECIA ROUSSEAU
AyoungAustralianman has crossed theditch towalk the length of NewZealandfor charity.
AdamChambers, 23, has already spent
62 dayswalking the entire length of theSouth Island, coming into contact withwhat he can only describe as incredibleand unforgettable views. Fundraising forthe FredHollows Foundation,MrChambers says his goal is to reach $18,000
by the end of his trek.I amwalking the TeAraroa trail
backwards so Bluff to Cape Reinga. Iman outdoors person and have alwayssuffered from visual impairment and Ibelieve in equality and think everybodyshould have access to the samehealthcareWestern countries do.
The third day of his walk sawhimdislocate his right shoulder, he has onlyfive toe nails left and stopped inPalmerstonNorth yesterday for physioon a sore knee.
I try not to rest for long it justdepends but I want to get going again assoon as possible. I amheading into theTararuas, Ruahines and the Kawekas so Ihope I can beat the cold.
Spending themajority of his nights inhuts along the trails,Mr Chambers saidmental challenges are common but he isnot one to give up.
Ivemet some amazing people alongtheway and really havent spentmore
than two days alone; tourists, hikers, hunters and even people who are startingto knowwho I am.
The audio technician saved his ownmoney to fund the trip and gives 100 percent of donations to the foundation.Relying on hospitality,Mr Chambers hasalready had to door knock for a place tocamp and hitchhiking is also a bigthing.
With no previous experiencewalkingtheNorth Island trail, Mr Chambers sayshe imagines it to bemore of a challengethan the South Island.
This is getting down to the nitty-grittysort of stuff now. I really will be puttingmyself through somemental and physicalchallenges so I hope the charity elementwill be recognised a lotmore. A blog is kept updated with pictures andthoughts and a sponsorship page has beenset up to direct funds to the charity. Visitwww.rambleon.co to follow Adam or to find thedonation link.

PICKOF THEBUNCH: Volunteers pulled together with around 40 others to establishtheManchester Street School orchard. PHOTO: FEILDINGBIBLECHAPEL
By ALECIA ROUSSEAU
Students and staff fromFeildingsManchester Street School are beamingwith pride after the establishment of theirneworchard.
The joint project between the school andtheir neighbour, the FeildingBibleChapel, has seen a once unused section of theschool becomea vibrant and productivearea.
With several types of fruit on offer and apencil picket fence, the feedbackhas beennothing but positive, according to principalRexWheeler.
It really has been a project driven byneighbours helping one anotherwearean enviro school andwewere searchingfor a projectwe could do thatwasmorecommunity integrated and thiswas it.
A nurseryhas been present at the schoolformanyyears, he added, and fruit treeshad also been planted previously aroundthe school. But itwasnt until the chapel got
on board that this newprojectwas born.I was chattingwithKevin andhe
immediately thought itwas a great idea.Theyhad concept plans drawnup, organised aworking bee to haveeverything installed and even provided thefood for thatweekend,MrWheelerexplained.
As an enviro school,Manchesterfocuses onmaking children aware of theneed to preserve things like power andwater, but also the importance ofsustainability and growing your own food.
Well also have a kitchen available soour learners can follow the fruit fromgarden to plate,MrWheeler said.
FeildingBibleChapels communitypastorKevinBarron said the churchhadapplied toEastern andCentral trust for agrant of $5000 to develop the orchard.Hesaid theywanted to encourage their ownmembers to becomemore involvedwiththe community and to learnmore abouthealthy living.

HAPPY TOHELP: Tutor Chantelle Tawha (standing) gives digital aid to John Pahina, Yan Jiang and TaraMaree-Dickinson at the City Library. PHOTO:SUPPLIED
By DALEWICKEN
Digital literacy is becomingincreasingly important, accordingtoPalmerstonNorthCityLibrarystaffwhoare taking steps tohelp.
Digital engagement team leaderWarrickTaylor anda teamoftutorshold free scheduled classesandhelp sessions for anyonewanting anykindof digitaltutoring.
Scheduled classes covereverything fromcomputer basicsthrough tohelpwithparticularprogrammesanddevices suchasSkype and iPads.
MrTaylor says themostcommonproblems the teamcomeacross includehelpingusers set upiPads and laptops, andgettingstartedwith eBooks. Weget askedall sorts of questions aboutcomputerusage, downloadingapps and evenwhat products arebest to buy.
Were trying to foster digitalliteracy in the community itsparticularly important because alot of information that used to beavailable in print is nowonline, like information fromGovernmentdepartmentswhoare assumingthat peoplehave internet access
andknowhow to operate acomputer, said tutor StuartHubbard. Digital is thewaypeople are communicatingnow.
The freehelp is popularwith allage groups, but particularly thosein their 30s andonwards. Theclasses are fillingup to the pointwhere awaiting list has beencreated to dealwith themountinginterest.
Each session is up to twohoursin length and two staff are presentto give asmuch individual help asneeded. Similar classes are alsoavailable at branch libraries inRoslyn,Awapuni andHighbury.
