Fight against eld horsetail continues

by Denise Gunn

Field horsetail, which has fast become a perennial weed of significant concern in several areas of the North Island, is widespread in the Manawatu and Rangitikei.

In response to the need to take action against this problem, Horizons Regional Council’s website has been updated to include extensive information on field horsetail. Details on the Rangitikei Field Horsetail Group, methods to contain the spread and manage the weed, informative video clips and images are all available on the website along with links to promotional material. The website gives farmers and landowners an opportunity to identify the weed before it becomes prolific on the property.

Native to the northern hemisphere, field horsetail was introduced into New Zealand in the 1920s, and by the mid-1990s was classed as an invasive species. Field horsetail hibernates in winter with a growing season in early spring. It has an extensive root structure and quickly takes over surrounding pasture. Although no cases of livestock poisoning have yet been reported in New Zealand, field horsetail has been attributed to toxicity in cattle, sheep, and horses in other countries.

Horizons environmental coordinator Craig Davey said there is no simple fix to manage field horsetail and instead a number of actions need to be taken.

“Field horsetail is difficult to manage and is best contained by using a combination of chemical, pathway and biological interventions.

“Landowners need to be determined and persistent, spraying the weed three to four times per year if sites are small and the root system isn’t too deep.”

Mr Davey said roadside to paddock spread is very common and landowners are encouraged to assess their road frontage in order to keep field horsetail at bay.

Horizons, in conjunction with the Rangitikei Field Horsetail Group and the Landcare Trust manage a Sustainable

Farming Fund project to import insects and diseases to New Zealand to be released against field horsetail. The group hopes to gain approval to release at least one biocontrol agent and be ready to begin mass rearing and distribution of this agent. It is likely to take up to five years for a biocontrol agent’s population to build to a level where impact assessment is appropriate.

Meantime, Horizons plans to review and develop its Regional Pest Management Strategy early next year. The strategy will need to align with new legislation under the Biosecurity Law Reform Act 2012 and cover pest plants such as field horsetail which have come into prominence over recent times.

“In the long term biological control is likely to be the only cost effective and sustainable option for field horsetail and this is the approach that Horizons is encouraging,” said Mr Davey.

Rural recycling strongly supportedby Denise Gunn

May proved to be a record-breaking month for Agrecovery Rural Recycling with nationwide container collections hitting the 30,000kg mark, making it the largest ever monthly volume since the programme began seven years ago.

Agrecovery marketing managing Duncan Scotland said the 30,000kg equates to a 20ft shipping container being filled with recycled plastic every day of the month.

“So it was a lot of containers diverted from burning or dumping,” he said.

Another near-record month was recorded in June with 27,000 tonnes of plastic collected nationwide.

Two recent recycling events in Taihape and Darfield collected close to 5,000 containers that would have otherwise been burned or dumped on properties.

Provisional figures for the financial year just ended show the volume of recycling containers collected from the Manawatu and Wanganui regions is up 40 percent compared to the same period last year.

Mr Scotland said farmers and growers are responding to the changing farming environment where demand for sustainable practices from both the market and the public keeps growing,

An Agrecovery mobile processing truck

plus significant regulatory changes like the ban on burning of agricultural plastic introduced by Environment Canterbury in January.

“It’s a significant positive change in behaviour away from harmful burning practices that are fast becoming a thing of the past.

Agrecovery Foundation chair Graeme Peters said the programme’s number one strategic priority is increasing the amount of plastic removed from rural areas.

“A record month and increased activity overall shows that the plans put in place by the board and carried out by its management team are on the right track.”

“The 60 companies which support Agrecovery through paying a levy on plastic containers will be pleased that their money is being spent in the right area — increasing the recycling of their containers,” said Mr Peters. The empty triple-rinsed containers are sent

to plants in Auckland and Christchurch, with most of the plastic being used to make underground cable covers.

According to Agrecovery, the 190 tonnes of containers collected so far this financial year equates to a 15cm wide cable cover reaching from Auckland to Invercargill and back.

adventure into

CHEESEMAKINGCULINARYBY DENISE GUNN PHOTOS: SACHA KENNY

Alexis Murti loves knowing where the food she eats, and serves her family and friends, comes from.

W ith a bountiful vegetable and herb garden, along with an orchard producing plenty of fruit on her

Otaki property, she makes her own preserves, chutneys and relishes, and puts together most meals from scratch. So it was only natural that progressing into cheesemaking would become an extension of this.

Alexis’s interest in cheesemaking was sparked after listening to a radio interview with cheesemaker Kathryn Mowbray. Soon afterwards Alexis attended a workshop held by Mindi Clews — one of only three New Zealand cheese-masters at the time. During the workshop, Alexis learnt how to make several cheese varieties.

Although Alexis admits her first cheesemaking attempts were a little hit and miss, she called on Mindi to clarify things. Mindi eventually asked Alexis to assist during her Wellington-based workshops. “This meant heating a lot of milk and doing a lot of dishes,

but I picked up an enormous amount of knowledge about various cheeses and how to make it along the way,” said Alexis.

Mindi also invited Alexis to work with her at ‘Curious Cook’, a business which focusses on taking people on a food adventure. This involved hands-on learning how to make a chosen product from start to finish.

“I started off by running three-hour Halloumi and Ricotta workshops on the Kapiti Coast,” said Alexis.

Around two years ago Mindi decided to concentrate on her professional career, so Alexis became the sole ‘Curious Cook’, focussing predominantly on cheesemaking workshops.

Food kit wholesaler and retailer Mad Millie also approached Alexis in mid 2012 to become one of their demonstrators.

“Their product range complements what I do very nicely,” said Alexis. In addition to growing her own food, Alexis

sources cows’ milk from a local farmer. “I am about to work with a small supply of goats’ milk which I am looking forward to working with.

“My sheep milk is currently sourced from another local supplier.”

When holding workshop classes in the Manawatu, Alexis is given milk by Arran Farm near Feilding.

Alexis endeavours to schedule at least two hands-on workshops each month. The workshop location and type of cheese varies. She has now taught hundreds of people in Wellington and the Kapiti Coast how to make cheese.

“I have only recently started teaching in the Manawatu and these classes have been well received so far.”

Alexis is also available for private workshops with groups, clubs, and friends wanting to get together to learn cheesemaking. Work events have also featured cheesemaking as an activity.

“My aim is that everyone should be able to walk away from one of my hands-on workshops confident that they can go home and reproduce

the cheesemaking process at home.” Workshops cover milk and where to source it, hygiene and sanitation, as well as the origins of the cheese the class will focus on.

All ingredients are provided and each workshop attendee will leave with the recipe and full set of course notes.

“They will also go home with either the Halloumi they have just made or the round of Brie, Feta, Camembert or Cheddar to brine, mature, and then to eat.”

The type of cheese Alexis likes to make changes often.

“Right now my favourite cheeses to make are creamy Brie, and Neufchatel — a

Camembert-like cheese which just oozes in the middle when cut

into. “I also love making Halloumi using sheep milk.”

Eventually Alexis would like to have her own sheep to milk with an aim of producing top-class Halloumi, as well as other cheeses.

She also has plans for a commercial kitchen, either through hiring or building, to enable her to sell the cheese she loves to make.

Alexis holds regular hands-on cheesemaking workshops

ENJOYINGBritish young farmer

rural New Zealandby Denise Gunn

Working on a dairy farm in New Zealand is a new experience for Luke Wing, but the young farmer from England has taken it all in his stride.

L uke arrived in New Zealand in March following a month travelling around Thailand and Cambodia.

With a few job offers lined up before he entered this country, he decided on a dairy farm worker position on a Waitotara Valley farm in the Whanganui region.

The 390ha Paetaia dairy farm is operated by sharemilking company

Paetaia Dairy Company Limited, owned by Longview Limited (the Pearce family), with Kent Weston-Arnold and Nicola Todd as managers. The farm is contracted to supply winter milk to Fonterra.

Although working on a dairy farm is new to Luke, he has worked on outback cattle stations in Australia during his travels.

“I worked in Australia for about six months in total, working on four different cattle stations for about two to three months at a time,” said Luke.

Some of Luke’s duties included mustering cattle by motorbike and

sorting stock in yards. “Also I would help repair and maintain fences, help with vehicle repair and maintenance, and metal work.”

In England, Luke worked in the pig breeding industry.

“Our job was to breed piglets and sell them to fattening farms at just three weeks old.” Luke also helped with farrowing sows.

“The aim of the game here was to take piglets away from mothers which gave birth to an excess of 10–12 piglets, and foster them onto sows who only gave birth to low numbers of 1–9.

ADVERTOR IA L

Helping Polymyalgia

This is an increasingly common in ammatory auto-immune disease causing muscle pain and fatigue.

The standard treatment for PMR is based around the powerful anti-in ammatory steroid medication prednisone. Many make a full recovery, usually over 12–18 months but others do not. It is of course the second group that often come to me for help.

In my client’s case, each time he reduced medication doses below a certain level there would be a relapse of symptoms. For these people it is like a barrier that they cannot get through. I put him on my standard PMR nutrition programme of diet and supplements and after six months he has been able to completely come off prednisone and is now symptom free.

My PMR recovery plan involves adoption of a strongly anti-in ammatory diet and an intensive supplement programme. Our goal is to help shut down production of in ammatory chemicals called prostaglandins and cytokines. Research (Alvez-Rodriguez et.al, 2010) shows that affected muscle tissue releases these chemicals and causes the in ammation of muscle bres.

We reduced in ammatory foods such as saturated fats, omega 6 oils, sugars especially high fructose syrup in zzy drinks and re ned carbohydrates. We balance this with lots of anti-in ammatory foods such as oily sh, green and low starch vegetables, whole grains, avocado, olive oil, and some nuts and seeds, especially almonds, walnuts and ax seeds.

The supplement regime needs to be initially quite aggressive with a cocktail of minerals, antioxidants, vitamins (especially B complex and vitamin D) and energy nutrients such as co enzyme Q10 and acetyl-l carnitine. We monitor progress closely and generally people start to feel bene ts after three months. Give me a call if you need more information.

I was speaking with one of my Hawke’s Bay clients last week who had been really struggling with Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR).

“By doing this you maximise the potential of raising equal number of piglets on as many mothers as can physically raise these piglets.”

Since his arrival at Paetaia dairy farm, Luke has helped collect autumn calves early in the morning and feed out maize silage. He’s also assisted with the installation of underground effluent pipes to help spread slurry to more paddocks.

Luke helps with the morning and afternoon milking routines too. The 1,100 cows are split into three herds, and the farm has beaten milk production targets for the year.

Learning to milk cows in a rotary shed has been challenging as Luke had only milked in a herringbone shed previously.

“Milking cows when the platform is turning has been difficult to learn, especially when you have to do it at a speed which makes the job efficient,” said Luke. “There is so much to learn about dairy farming for a novice such as myself, but there is no better place to learn it because I live at my

work and I am learning all the time.” A roster system on the farm means every day is different for the workers.

Luke said he is surprised at how high the price of milk being paid out to farmers is.

“Back home there are big protests and petitions to get the government to get a fair price of milk being paid to farmers.”

In England, Young Farmers Clubs have been a large part of Luke’s

life. “My involvement in Young Farmers back home was intensive.” Luke

was competitions secretar y for the

Wymondham Young Farmers Club (YFC).

He is also the current Norfolk YFC international links person, and hopes to make strong contacts with some of New Zealand’s YFC members while he is in this country.

“I look forward to meeting up with as many Young Farmer Clubs in the Taranaki and Manawatu districts over my time here.”

New cream adds value to dairyA Hamilton based company reckons Cleopatra may have been onto something when she bathed in milk.

Using a patented ingredient derived from New Zealand cow’s milk, research-focussed Quantec Personal Care has developed a clinically proven anti-acne cream. The company believes this breakthrough skincare product is a world first and represents an entirely new approach to improving acne and problem skin.

Quantec founder and managing director, Dr Rod Claycomb, explains: “The bioactive enzymes and proteins found in our Epiology anti-acne cream are essentially the same active enzymes and proteins that all mammals produce to protect themselves from potentially harmful bacteria and other micro-

Founder and managing director of Hamilton’s Quantec Limited, Dr Rod Claycomb

organisms. “The enzymes and proteins occur naturally and provide a protective function in saliva and around gums, tears, raw milk and throughout the gut. This raw ingredient — which we call IDP® — is the key component of the Epiology acne cream.”

IDP® has unique properties which makes it very powerful against certain types of disease-causing bacteria. When applied to the skin, it leaves the natural and beneficial bacteria of the skin largely unaffected.

“By leaving these natural and beneficial bacteria active on the skin, IDP® creates an ideal scenario for management of acne. In addition, these bio-proteins interact with inflamed tissues and cells to help quell the inflammatory response, which is a primary cause of acne.”

It has taken the Quantec research and development team seven years to create IDP® and prove its effectiveness

for acne. “Our clinical trial results have demonstrated the benefits of using Epiology acne cream. The study showed

Epiology provided subjects with clearer and brighter complexions, without irritation or redness, and is particularly suitable for those with sensitive skin.”

The Epiology range of products is being sold in pharmacies throughout New Zealand.

THE GREAT KIWI HOLIDAY PLANNER

Take a break in tourist paradiseby Andy Bryenton

A well earned break is always welcome — especially after a whole four seasons of hard yakka working on the land. But where to go to enjoy the best scenery, the wildest cuisine, the friendliest greetings and the most amazing thrills? The answer might be just around the corner.

The Pacific Islands are nice this time of year, and Aussie is affordable and close — but more tourists from around the world wish they could come to New Zealand than to any of our nearest neighbours. It’s no surprise that over six percent of our entire workforce is gainfully employed making travellers feel welcome, while tourism generates an estimated 24 billion dollars each year. It’s so important that our Prime Minister is also our Minister of Tourism!

Think about it from a foreign traveller’s perspective, and you can clearly see the appeal. Within one relatively tiny nation (you could fit us into Canada several times over) you can find everything from white sand surf beaches to world-class ski resorts, rainforests and champion trout fishing to extreme adventure sports.

Hunting season never ends in New Zealand, unlike in other lands where hunters must crouch in their blinds for weeks without seeing a deer. Our fishing is so great that overseas angling shows come here to film ‘dream escape’ stories.

Then there’s the other great part about taking a trip in your own country. You already know the lingo. The local customs aren’t so strange. The exchange rate is precisely 1 to 1. And there’s no need to get a visa, foreign driver’s

Trimmed cows less likely to go lameLast month I talked a little bit about diet contributing to lameness in dairy cows.

Bruising on a hoof in a typical pattern area

even beef cows that don’t see any stones because they never go on a track or hardly go into cattle yards.

Secondly, here is another piece of evidence. We did a trial a few years ago where we trimmed 1,500 cows and we compared them to 1,500 cows that were not trimmed. The trimmed cows were less likely to go lame than the non-trimmed cows.

Let me explain why this is evidence. When we trim we do so according to the Dutch method. In this method we trim the outer claw thinner so it will be closer to the same height as the inner claw. We do this because the outer claw will carry more weight than the inner claw if it is higher, so by trimming the outer claw we transfer the excess weight back to the inner claw so they both carry the same amount of weight. This means that if the outer claw is trimmed thinner it would be more vulnerable to stone bruising. So, if it is more vulnerable, why is it less likely to become lame? According to the stone bruise theory it should be more likely to become lame. It doesn’t really make sense, does it?

Next month I would like to look at how tracks impact on lameness, if it is not the stones that are causing the problems. Until then, just keep sending those emails to: [email protected]

I may not be able to get back to you all individually, but I will endeavour to address your comments and questions in my articles.

There is a lot more I can say about that and I will come back to it, however I am keen to get into some of the other issues.

In my original article I asked for some solid evidence of stones being the cause of bruising and sole penetration.

Some people replaced the word stone with track. I did not ask about tracks. I asked about stones. I know we find most of the stones on the tracks but that does not mean that they are the same.

I too, believe that tracks have an effect on lameness, so if you have just spent a lot of money on your tracks, or you are about to, then I am sure you will see an improvement.

But I don’t believe it is the stones that do the damage to cow’s hooves. Therefore, I want to show you some evidence on which I base my conclusions.

First, have a look at the haemorrhage in a cow’s feet. If you compare enough claws you will soon find a pattern in the haemorrhaging. Very often the most severe haemorrhage is in the typical area (see photo). If those red spots came from stones then would it not be unusual that the same pattern keeps occurring?

It happens too often to be a coincidence. Do you also notice that often the opposite foot has the same haemorrhage pattern but in mirror image?

There are not many cows that have no haemorrhage at all in the hoof — even among the ones which are in the cow shed first and go straight back to the paddock. I agree that with some cows you really have to look for it, but most cows have some haemorrhage —

Although it appears that the main issues are nutrient leaching, soil erosion and af uent run-off, I see that these issues can be easily xed. The true agenda is the rising af uent consumer markets world-wide. When you look and listen to these consumers their call is for safe, centralised, nutritiously dense food, produced in an on-going sustainable and environmentally friendly way.

Our current agro-chemical production methods cannot and will not ever be able to satisfy this new consumer call. We are missing out on these revenue rich markets due to the domination of chemical production practises taught in our society. We are not the only country with this problem. However, the future is with those countries that can reject this quick x chemical production system and hook into the rhythm of natural food production, reaping the bene ts of healthy nutritiously dense food and the return that such food can generate. Our world is changing and we need to be at the forefront of the change.

I believe that out of all the countries on our planet New Zealand is ideally

placed, with our good weather, our soils and most probably most importantly, our isolation. If we supplied safe, certi ed nutritiously dense food in a sustainable and eco-friendly way, we would never be able to meet the worldwide demand. A huge bonus would be the added spin-off for our New Zealand tourism industry. Can we do it? Yes we can and should! All the ingredients are here.

We really need a new system, maybe a NZ Inc, involving all New Zealand Export Companies to drive us into those af uent markets, establishing a leading brand like a “Roll Royce Badge”. I know that this was tried 20 years or so ago, but the market really wasn’t ready then, I believe the market is ready now and this is extenuated by all the rules, regulations and compliance controls which are esculating on the global scene.

We have our beautiful country, we have our hard working, entrepreneurial people and I believe the timing is right now. A change in food production methods will take us there.

Agrissentials was, initially instigated after attending a Food and Beverage

Food Council meeting in Waipuna, Auckland in 1992, where several off-shore speakers spoke about the upcoming new af uent consumer and their demand for safe, certi ed, nutritiously dense food. This market has slowly grown over the last twenty two years to a point, where it is now ripe for the picking.

Agrissentials knew that the initial change to meet this consumer demand had to begin in the soil. If you get the soil right, with minerals and microbes, health and vitality will ensure to all life above the soil, plants, animals and humans setting up a system that will meet all export and local criteria.

Agrissentials best on earth fertilisers are remineralising life from the soil up and this month they have a fantastic eldays special — everyone that buys this month can go in the draw to win their money back! With rules, regulations and compliance issues being raised in most rural magazines in recent years, I believe that it’s time to take a more positive view toward the direction these issues will take our agricultural and horticultural industries.

Rural New Zealand needs to wake up and take an active interest in the forthcoming general election. The National government is 22% ahead of their rivals Labour, but that majority can erode and disappear altogether by election day.

History has shown that where voters are lethargic and don’t bother to take an interest, the outcome can be quite different to pre-election polling.

Examples in the British election of Harold Wilson’s government against polling odds, the election of Jim Bolger’s National government in spite of prior poor polling where Jim Bolger declared, ‘bugger the polls’, demonstrates that in this year’s forthcoming election, everyone should make an effort to exercise their democratic right to vote.

In Australia the law requires all eligible voters to exercise their democratic right and maybe it’s time for New Zealand to have the same requirement.

The rural community have much to lose in the coming election if the majority of urban voters support the Labour party’s proposed policy of expanding the current capital gains tax law, which

currently is paid by developers and individuals who make their living by buying and selling properties, other than the family home. Labour is planning to extend the capital gains tax policy to affect farm sales.

I believe Labour’s proposed tax rates are clearly designed with a Robin Hood mentality to attack the rich and distribute the gains to their voters. The Greens’ tax policy of hitting dairy farmers with a green tax of between $12,000 and $13,000 and distributing this money as tax breaks to persuade voters to vote for them, reeks of the same policy of taking money from the country’s wealth creators.

The National government claims that their current tax system is the envy of the world. While I don’t profess to be an economist and we all welcome tax cuts, how is it that while we seem to

receive tax cuts on one hand, on the other we have consumer costs like electricity, local government rates and compliance costs increasing due to government moving costs directly on to the consumer, by seeking higher dividends from state-owned enterprises.

When political parties promise to give you the world, the first question is, where is the money going to come from? Some of us do remember the architect of the Labour government’s Black Budget that was introduced by Labour’s then Finance Minister Arnold Nordmeyer, where the wealth creators were unfairly treated to fund that government’s social policies. The following election Labour was relegated to the Opposition benches for a number terms.

We need a ‘steady as you go‘ approach by a government that has clear direction, stimulates wealth creation and has a fair, balanced social policy. Since the 2008 world financial crisis that hit the western economy, New Zealand has been protected from bank collapses by government guarantees and the government borrowing heavily to maintain the New Zealand economy.

The National government has maintained its promise of presenting a surplus budget which will be used

to repay government debt. Every three years at election time the nation’s voters become important when our politicians suddenly forget about the comfort and smell of the leather seats in the parliamentary limousines and the cuisine at Bellamys and go out looking for voter support. With the many promises that are being made by aspiring politicians, one would indeed think that New Zealand was the land

of ‘milk and money’ and that New Zealand’s economy can afford their policy promises — that we voters will be looked after. They have our interests at heart and they know best.

Urban and rural voters, this is not a time for short-term memories.

A lot of effort has gone into expanding New Zealand exports

into new markets with national exports to China now reaching $20 billion annually. However, we are still subject to high exchange rates and our economy is affected by the actions of the world’s major economies and our trading partners.

It is incumbent on all of us to take an interest in this forthcoming election, to speak out and ask the hard questions and challenge the policies that are being put forward by aspiring politicians.

It is incumbent on all of us to take an

interest in this forthcoming election, to speak out

and ask the hard questions

Wool PerspectiveFrom Rob Cochrane GM, Procurement, PGG Wrightson Wool

Auction shows it’sstrength as season ends

June 30 will signal the completion of the (current) 2013–14 wool selling season and with that a reflection of what were the major drivers of another difficult, yet rewarding, 12 months for wool growers.

From the broader wool trade perspective the season has brought with it the usual challenges of matching supply and demand in order to turn a profit and retain shareholder support, and a few surprises as probably one of the most competitive seasons on record with wool brokers and traders battling for market share from the ever diminishing wool clip due, in the main, to significant land use change affecting all sheep breeds.

Market prices throughout the year varied with fluctuating demand and after a slow beginning at levels below 500 cents clean for crossbred fleece things turned for the better and prices soared to beyond 600 cents clean by the end of October. As is usual after a sudden and steep climb in market prices, there was

a correction once exporters had filled their immediate shipment requirements and the market eased to stabilise around the low to early 500 cents range by early December, but gradually lifted to around 580 at time of writing.

It would appear that there has been good solid enquiry during the past few months from processors and manufacturers who require steady supply of New Zealand wool and, now that a much clearer picture has emerged of likely wool production from the New Zealand sheep flock along with the relatively small stockpile of unsold grower wool available, those customers will currently be assessing their requirements for the next year and beyond. While basic supply versus demand will usually be the

major influence of market price variances, there are always other factors, such as sudden changes in economic conditions and wild currency movements, which can impact on markets overnight.

For those of us who have been involved in the industry for a few decades we can all relate to some outside influence which created short term mayhem in the wool market, whether that was a sharp spike in price or a sudden collapse. Unfortunately these fluctuations are likely to continue with usually only brief lead-in time evident before any real movement however in times of limited wool supply, such as we are experiencing at present, the auction system stands out as the platform for wool growers to realise the best available true spot market prices.

Over the past few months the auction has shown its strength and provided the level playing field upon which buyers can compete openly for the wool on offer.

Whatever the wool market does in relation to price movements, the main influence that growers can have is to ensure that their product is delivered to the market place in the best possible condition.

That involves a good standard of preparation in the wool shed at shearing time, a good standard of

packaging (preferably in a brand new wool pack) showing clear bale identification, and ensuring that the wool inside the wool packs is free from any contamination from foreign material such as polypropylene, cotton, plastics, metal etc.

Contaminants in wool bales remain an issue for processors and while a large percentage of New Zealand wool is scoured (washed) in New Zealand prior to shipment, allowing for detection of most foreign objects, a large percentage is also shipped off-shore ‘in the grease’ therefore any contaminants are only (hopefully) detected once the wool is removed from the bales for processing. That is not a good look for New Zealand wool, therefore more care is required.

That’s my view.

Ace lays cards on the table

Speculation as to the properties and abilities of the new Polaris Ace has been rife since the first images of this nimble little machine emerged from the United States.

Was it going to handle like a tiny version of the sporty RZR 900? Would its full roll-over protection system make it a winner on the farm? Would quad riders be able to easily adapt to a seating arrangement and control layout more familiar in a family sedan?

All these questions have now been answered, with the Ace landing four wheels on the ground at the recent

Mystery Creek Fieldays. In addition to this timely exposure, we’ve had the chance to take a spin in the little double-overhead-cam firecracker, and the results have been surprising to say the least.

There’s no question that the safety issue — a huge ‘elephant in the room’ when discussing off-road machines has been addressed here in spades. The full cage, side intrusion bars and mesh combine to make this little vehicle safer than most others which share it’s

diminutive footprint. Power too, is hardly lacking, with 32 horses on tap — more than you get from some full-size UTVs. The Ace revs high, but delivers smooth acceleration on the flat and ample torque for the rough stuff, boasting over 600kgs of towing grunt as well.

No, the big surprise here is the market who should seriously — as in right now, today — go and take a spin in an Ace. There’s no doubt that farmers are a tough breed, but many have been working the land for decades now and the rigours of throwing a leg over the quad saddle, then leaning into the turns all day is no picnic. Anyone with a bad back, or prone to aches and pains must take a seat in the Ace, because it’s comfy, the suspension is forgiving, there’s no need to throw your weight around, and there’s a roll cage to grab onto to help get in and out.

Overseas, the Ace has been widely appreciated by those who use such vehicles not for work, but purely for recreation. Aces have been seen in

large numbers on the famous Rubicon Trail, where both novice off-roaders and veterans have praised its easy-to-pick-up control layout and comfortable ride. Such features definitely transfer across to the farm — and there’s nothing to stop those who buy the Ace for business taking it out for a pleasurable jaunt on the weekend!

So safety — a big tick, and OSH will be more than happy with that ROPS. With ample load space and towing power, the Ace can do a lot of what bigger UTVs do, but with a smaller footprint. And for ride comfort, especially on long days — this is something new which deserves attention. Your local Polaris dealer will be pleased to give you a demo.

For the future, Polaris are keeping close-lipped about further developments of the concept, but speculation is rife. Top of the wish list — an Ace packing the extra firepower of Polaris’ 570cc engine, as seen in their side-by-side Ranger. We shall have to wait and see — and enjoy this model in the meantime!
