West Side Story

West side story represents survival in a life with a lot of racist people hating each other and causing trouble.

In the picture above it is showing the separation of the races, On the right we have the rich, snobbish white people who have been there sense they where born. On the left is the poor, Puerto Ricans, who have moved in and thought that they could take over.

West Side Story cont. In the picture shown

here it shows that it is possible to survive together even if you are from two totally different backgrounds.

They fought for what they believed in because they wanted to be together no matter what other people said.

Fahrenheit 451

Fahrenheit 451 shows the survival of a lost art.

People had given up reading books, they had become very technology oriented. This was not a good thing, and there where some people that fought to keep the books alive.

Page 6: Man vs society

Fahrenheit 451 cont. People memorized books so

that they could pass them down to other generations to keep the “lost art alive.”

If there was no people like this then books would have never survived in their society.

Non-Conformist Music

Non-conformist music represents the survival of an “out-group” in society.

People who are not in the norm, they like to do their own thing.

In the song Red Flag by Billy Talent He says “Speak for yourself or they’ll speak for you” to me this means that you need to speak for yourself, do your own thing or you will turn into one of those people that just live a life of lies.

Non-Conformist Music cont.

In the song Youth Gone Wild by Skid Row they use the lyrics “They call us problem child, we spend our lives on trial.” This is them saying that those who try to be different are looked at as bad kids but really they are just paving their own path to get to where they want to in life.

Civil Disobedience

Civil Disobedience represents the survival a nation as a whole.

In Civil disobedience they talk about how the government and army work together to try to survive.

They quote “If I devote myself to other pursuits and contemplations, I must first see, at least, that I do not pursue them sitting upon another man’s shoulders.” To me this means that we cannot always depend on other people for our survival but we must do something for ourselves to help our cause.

Civil Disobedience cont.

The government and army work together to keep us all safe we all know this but sometimes the government does things that can put us in jeopardy. Another quote to represent this is “That government is best which governs the least” this tells me that sometimes the government just needs to sit back and let the people of the country solve their own problems.

Lord of the Flies

Lord of the Flies represents the survival of the fittest

Page 12: Man vs society

Lord of the Flies cont.

In the book they are forced to make life changing decisions as young kids.

Most choose to go with Jack, who split from the original group to become his own because he did not believe that they would be able to survive with Ralph as their leader.

Book of Eli

The Book of Eli represents surviving with disabilities.

In The Book of Eli, Eli goes through life doing more than most while blind.

Page 14: Man vs society

Book of Eli cont.

Going through life blind by its self is hard enough but Eli went through a post-apocalyptic word with people shooting at him and trying to kill him but he held his own and protected what he believed in, The Bible.

Teenage Wasteland and Beautiful Spencer

Teenage wasteland and Beautiful Spencer both represent the survival of an outcast in society

In both of these stories there is a young man that struggles to survive because they are different from everyone else in their society.

Page 16: Man vs society

Teenage Wasteland and Beautiful Spencer cont.

Spencer and Donny are both put into a situation where they are looked down upon because they are no tin the norm, they fight, do drugs, and do a lot of other things that people do not feel is okay.

In the end both of these kids end up giving up because of the amount of pressure that is put on them.

Native American Poetry

The Native American poetry we read represent the survival of an ancient group of people when the world is changing.

In Grandfather Cries by Charles Phillip Whitedog they say “Can I stop being Indian now?” This means that they want to change to be how the world is going to be.

Native American Poetry cont.

In We Are The People Of Long Ago by Doreen Chavarria They say “But now we drink liquor and hurt ourselves and other” This means that they are losing their originality and depending on others for there wealth instead of working hard themselves.
