About Man Ray

• Man Ray lived through two World Wars.

• He is a painter, photographer as well as film maker.

• He was inspired by a few artists: Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinsky and Marcel Duchamp.

• Man Ray was a leading figure in the Dada movement.

Rayographs

Man rays rayographs were actually first made by accident in the dark room. These are made by placing and manipulating objects on pieces of photosensitive paper.

These are the curve edits-you can see to the right side of the screen the different curves

Solarisation

After discovering the Rayograph, Man Ray decided to experiment with a technique called Solarisation- this adds a silvery, ghostly quality to the image.

• These 9 were my best solarised images, I kept them in colour because they were more effective that way.

• To create these images: I found the originals on the internet and then took them to photoshop.

• I then inverted the colours and created the ‘solarised’ look.
