A 27-year-old Fort Lauderdale man was indicted and accused of identity theft and filing

false tax returns for refunds, U.S. Attorney Wifredo A. Ferrer announced Friday.

David Joseph was charged with six counts total, including possession of a firearm by a

convicted felon, when he made his first appearance in Fort Lauderdale federal court on

Friday, records showed.

On April 25, agents searched a West Park location where Joseph had stayed and found

numerous notebooks, medical printouts, IRS correspondence, prepaid debit cards, bank

documents, and other paperwork that contained thousands of victims' names with

corresponding social security numbers and dates of birth, prosecutors said.

A loaded semi-automatic MasterPiece Arms 9 mm pistol

with extra ammunition was also recovered. Agents

determined it belonged to Joseph who was a convicted

felon, court records stated.

If convicted, Joseph faces a maximum of 5 years in prison

for each of the fraudulent tax refund counts, up to 10 years for fraud, 2 years on each

aggravated identity theft count, and up to 10 years for possession of a firearm by a convicted

felon, prosecutors said.
