Factory-to-FoundationMammoet’s concept for modular construction

Modularization is increasingly used to compress the timetable for the construction of large plants, often

in remote areas. The larger and heavier the modules can be, the greater the savings.

Mammoet, worldwide leaders in engineered heavy lifting and transport, have the expertise, people and

equipment to handle even the largest modules. Our Factory-to-Foundation concept means that you

only have to deal with a single contractor. We collect the modules from the fabricator, transport them to

site, and place them on the foundation. We also arrange all engineering, route surveys and permits -

saving you time and money.

Mammoet Asia Pacifi c has a large fl eet of equipment such as heavy cranes and SPMTs (Self-Propelled

Modular Transporters). We can also obtain further specialist equipment from other Mammoet sites.

The fl eet permanently based in the region includes over 800 axle lines of conventional and self-propelled

trailers. Our cranes range from compact mobile cranes to ring cranes with a capacity of 5000 tons. The

Mammoet worldwide fl eet gives us access to even heavier equipment. The equipment is operated and

maintained by our 600 personnel.

Our in-house engineers are supported by the specialist Engineering Department at Mammoet’s head

offi ce. For large projects we typically have a team working at the client’s site for a longer period. This

enables them to liaise effectively with the client, advise on module design, prepare the transport plans,

design sea fastenings and pick-up points, etc.

Planning

Mammoet can get involved with projects at an early stage. This gives us an opportunity to advise on the

design of the modules and discuss the transport options. Optimization of the design at this stage can

save signifi cant costs and time. Once the dimensions and weights of the modules are known we can

identify the best options for the load-out at the fabricator’s yard, the barges or ships used for the sea

crossing, and the transport over land to the construction site.

Sea transport

Depending on the load, route and destination, Mammoet uses either towed barges or heavy-lift ships

for sea transport. Our engineers will carefully identify the centre of gravity of the load and design the sea

fastenings. Modules may be loaded and unloaded using the vessel’s own cranes, fl oating cranes,

onshore cranes or roll-on/roll-off with SPMTs.

Typically, we will aim to keep the centre of gravity of the load as low as possible, to improve the stability

of the vessel and reduce the need for sea fastenings. If necessary, the load can be jacked up at the

destination to raise it to the required installation height.

Route survey

While our engineers are busy in the offi ce or at the client’s site, our route surveyors check the constraints

associated with the route over land. This includes measuring clearances, identifying street furniture to

be relocated, overhead cables to be rerouted or shut down temporarily, road gradients, bridge capacities,

etc. Identifying these constraints well in advance means that we can plan the transport effectively and

avoid delays once the load gets on the road.

Mammoet will also identify any permits which are needed for the transport operations and apply for

them, liaise with local and road authorities and the police, and arrange escorts and parking arrangements

on the route. We will also ensure that any necessary temporary or permanent modifi cations are made to

street furniture, cables and bridges.

Road transport

Once the sea transport reaches the port of destination the modules are offl oaded. They are generally

transported to the construction site on conventional trailers or SPMTs. Mammoet’s extensive experience

helps us deal with poor roads, weak bridges, gradients and demanding environmental conditions.

Installation

Our personnel will study the arrangements on site and identify the best way of installing the modules on

the foundations. Often this can be done with the SPMTs used for road transport. Where necessary they

can be fi tted with risers to install equipment on tall foundations.

AQIS

Mammoet is thoroughly familiar with the AQIS (Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service) requirements

for cleaning construction equipment such as cranes and SPMTs which are brought into Australia. We

ensure that the equipment is cleaned thoroughly and that timber is replaced where necessary. This

avoids delays when the modules and equipment arrive in Australian ports.
