Armadillo

1. Description
• Shape: Small head, oval body, hard shell, hard tail, and oval head
• Length: 15 to 17 inches ( The body) Tail 14 to 16 inches
• Height: 18 to 23 inches
• Weight: 8 to 17 pounds
• Colors and Markings: Brown, Khakii, to a pebble Grey. Small indents on its head.
2. Habitat
• Part of World: North and South America, also Australia.
• Environment: Usually in holes surrounded by thicket. They also live in deserts by streams
• Shelter: The armadillo goes to it’s hole for shelter.
3. Diet
• Meat: The armadillo eats insects such as fly's and spiders for protein.
• Plants: He also eats small plants in the dessert.
• Other: He will also eat any left over's from other animals.
• The armadillos are omnivores.
4. Family Life
• Offspring: They usually have one to three a year.
• Gestation: The armadillo is pregnant for 120 days.
• When Born: Babies are often born in December and July.
• Care: They usually don’t take care of their young but if they do the mom takes care of them.
5. Social Behavior
• Play time: For a game they chase each other in circles for 25 seconds.
• This is known to relax the armadillo.
• This is their version of tag
6. Characteristics
• Temperate: An armadillo is nice, soft, shy, playful, and will run away if you get to close.
• Habitat and behavior: Their habitats are deserts and forests. They are active at dusk and dawn. They are alone until they find a mate. They usually have more than one mate.
7. Defense
• Defense: They burrow in to the earth within a few minutes. Disapering completely. If they are cornered they will use their claws to fight.
• Acquiring food: The armadillo has a sticky tongue and sharp teeth.
• Life span: 20 years.
8. History
• History: Armadillos were brought to earth for a symbol of humanity to a couple of minor gods. (Myth)
• The Europeans found the first armadillo.
9. Relationships to Humans
• We are mean to armadillos. When they are looking for food they cross the street at night. They get startled by the noise.
• So they jump in the air, then BAM they get smoked by the car.
• Half of the armadillos population is getting wiped out because they get hit by our cars.
• Armadillos are endangered.
10. Present Status
• Breeds: There are 20 different species of armadillos.
• More status: Armadillos can hold their breath underwater for 6 minutes. They are able to do this because they fill their lungs with air so they are able to breath.
Facts
• Armadillos have poor sight but a keen smell. They can smell prey from 6 inches underground.
• Armadillos are known as The Little Armored One. When the Armadillo is scared it pulls itself into a ball and rolls away.
• They are the oldest group of mammals.
More facts
• When they are startled they can jump 3 to 4 feet in the air.
• The Spanish people gave the armadillo its name by its size and outer appearance.
