Over the past year, North Carolina DanceTheatre has made big moves both on and

off the stage! Last June the Company moved toits new home, the Patricia McBride & Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux Center for Dance on NorthTryon Street in uptown Charlotte. Shortlythereafter the Company traveled toWashington, D.C., to perform at the KennedyCenter for the first time.

The Company hadmany “firsts” this seasonincluding performingDracula, devoting aperformance series towomen choreographers, and working with up-and-coming choreographers JiriBubenicek and EmeryLeCrone. Other highlightswere ResidentChoreographer DwightRhoden’s world premiereballet Reflections of…,inspired by the life andwork of Charlotte-bornartist Romare Bearden, and InnovativeWorks, which included seven environmentally themedballets.

Dance Theatre is building on theexcitement and momentum of the past year andlooking forward to an artistically excellent andentertaining 2011-2012 Season. Highlights forthe upcoming season include choreographerWilliam Forsythe’s In The Middle, Somewhat

Elevated. This legendary contemporary ballet isa favorite among many NC Dance Theatredancers and is part of the Director’s Choiceperformance in October. Dancer Sasha Janestakes a break from performing to choreographDangerous Liaisons. The twisted tale of passionand betrayal with original music and a modernset premieres in April.

The season isanchored with the classics– Nutcracker, one ofCharlotte’s favorite holidaytraditions, and SleepingBeauty, considered theessence of classical ballet.Sleeping Beauty takes to thestage in March withenchanting choreography, gorgeous costumes, magical sets andTchaikovsky’sunforgettable score.

In November thepopular InnovativeWorksseries moves to the new200-seat theater insideDance Theatre’s home in

Uptown Charlotte. “Moving InnovativeWorksto Dance Theatre’s home gives us the ability totry some new things we’re excited about,” saidPresident & Artistic Director Jean-PierreBonnefoux. “We’re taking InnovativeWorksfrom a performance to an experience – bringingthe audience closer to the dancers than everbefore.”
