concerning the health and all-around well-being of the residents of Brgy. Mambuaya in the hopes ofspreading enough awareness to bring about a means of birthing solutions in a sustainable way, through the means

of forum discussions after every episode, aiming for intense exchange of opinions and problem-solving ideas in a setforum discussion. The radio program set in Mambuaya focused on the issue of highest priority according to the results\

in the audience survey conducted among the initial set of respondents. It was first found out that, three of the main issuesin their community was (1) Health, (2) Teenage Pregnancy, and (3) Drugs; which showed community health dominating the majo-

rity. Reasons for this that most of the audience were comprised of senior citizens and mothers who felt that there was a lack of inform-ation in their barangay when it came to health and that the climate in the bukid, was a concern for most due to the high risk of spreadingof disease and other contagious illnesses. So, in order to address the problem, the radio program was designed to inform, tackle, and give

advice concerning health issues or inquiries.

The youthsattended mostly because of encouragement from their mothers andlistened to the radio program out of curiosity while the older wo-men were genuinely interested and expressed a degree ofeagerness towards the program.

For our radio program, we haddecided to base our questionson the survey results and thefrequently asked questionsmade by the respondentswho were to become ourmain audience. Weinterviewed an expertin nutrition anddoctor for our firstepisode so to answerquestions about familynutrition andcommon diseasesexperiencedfrequently inMambuaya.

HIGHLIGHTSSo far, there were no major problems for this week except only

those in relation with editing that we must adjust and adjust tovvvmake it 15 minutes. And also, in regard with our DJ, we had avvvvv

change of DJs as what the team had decided and immediatelyvvvvrecorded the lines of the new DJ before the scheduled finalvv

editing. This week was successful with the help of each membersin doing their differentt responsibilities that led the week into

what the team has expected to be.

The overall reception of our radio program was positive. The audience showed interest and became inquisitive soon after they took in the information. The audience expressed excitement towards the program and is looking forward to the next forum with some expressing reluctance to miss the next episode. The kagawad, Josephine Baungon repeats the need for such a program to address the many health issues observed within the community and wanted to lengthen the time per session as it was “helpful to them”. The audience took the health tips and advices given in a positive note; showed a willingness to learn more; and read theb brochures given to them. No negative feedback was given only that they wanted more of the program and found 15 minutes to not be enough. They also wanted to invite more than the regular 30 respo- ndents than we already had since they think it would help every- one to join the forum. The audience was also concerned with how to incorporate the health and nutrition advice given into their daily diet and asked for recipes and more affordable substitutions for basic sources of the required daily nutrients as was given by our guest nutritionist in the show which the group had assured them will all be addressed in the next episode and further down the line.

The forumwas facilitatedby the director

and scriptwriterwith the audiencehesitating at first.

There were a few mo-ments that the audience

seemed to do more ofthe listening and less of

the talking. An icebreakerwas clearly needed or for the

audience to at least grow acc-ustomed to the whole situation.Having been surveyed, they hadexpected to only listen and was

told that there would be a forum 2weeks prior but most seemed shy andtook to averting being called to share.

after a while though, the audience startedposing questions and scenarios which

relate to the others and thus began discus-sion amongst the audience and facilitators.A few older memebers spoke up, including

kagawad Josephine, and spoke mostly of howthe program will help inform and be a channel

for their questions that they either are too shy to asa doctor or never occurred to them to ask their

doctors personally due to the barangay being situatedfar from the city proper. The forum mostly was about

asking questions and observations were made from the facilitators. Some members of the audience

approached a facilitator with their ownconcern privately and only after the

forum was done. No action wastaken besides the audience

inquiring and waiting for results from

their queries.

Health Facts

The back of the brochure tackled

most of the commondiseases that concern the

respondents and other citizens of Mambuaya. This

is due to the change of weatherand that their climate is diff-

erent from the city. This makes them prone to common colds,

coughs, fever, and even flu.

HIGHLIGHTS During our second episode, we had managed our errors and difficulties in the previous episode due to adjustment and better time management. We had a very successful second episode at the end. During the production, we were shocked from having 41 respondents all in all because there were only 26 who signed up previously but because there were also youth that time at the center, we invited them to listen and participate in the forum. Fortunately, they joined us for the current episode and the other 2 more along the way.

There was an increase in audienc due to the invitations from elders and kagawad Josephine in the hopes to spread awareness further. The audience actively listened and participated in the forum, they learned a lot from the beginning of the program with the Mambu #5 Health Tips and from the interviews regarding high blood pressure and salt/sodium consump- tion. The facilitators surveyed the audience in what they were interested to know from the third episode and in return, happily raised many suggestions for the show and questions regarding common diseases and their preven- tions. They consulted the team for their individual concerns and it was like being in the clinic of a doctor that patients do come and consult. For the next episode, the eam is having the best of they could do to answer all their questions and wants.

For our second episode, we hadfollowed up on the audience’s con-cern about high blood pressure. It

also focused on the merits of ahealthy diet since it was foundduring the previous episode ofthe profound misinformation

most had about: salt or sodium consumption andthe disease that are caused

by it; and dieting andwhat it really means

and should mean.

For our third episode, we focused moreon the common diseases that ails ouraudience especially the seniors, so weasked more about on kidney diseaseand its relation to high blood andwhat vitamins or minerals aremostly needed in a senior citi-zen’s diet in order to age grace-fully and healthily which alsohelps them with memoryproblems and such. We alsofollowed up on the otherrespondent’s queries lastepisode mainly aboutvision, lung disease, and heart deffects inboth children andadults.

HIGHLIGHTS Our third episode did not come through on the third Sun- day but was moved on the following Wednesday which became a worrying factor for the team since respondents were busy on week- days thus could result to no listeners during airing time. But that was not the case for the barangay because even through rain, they attended and some even closed their shops to be able to listen to our program. After the production synthesis with the facilitators, residents discussed about what it was like to grow old and there- fore become more prone to sickness and diseases. The facilitators once again, reiterated to the audience on the dangers of high blood pressure and how a bad diet could worsen or even cause the situation. The respondents appreciated the brochures given to them and asked for more for further reading. It was becoming apparent that the respondents were clearly interested in a healthy lifestyle and absorbed the tips and advice given to them. Again they were asked of what other conditions that were ailing them and first they were busy with discussing and at first could not think of other concerns until one of the senior ladies asked about cysts and myoma or more commonly known as uterine fibroids and sparked a furor of other inquiries finally suggesting an episode about the female reproductive issues wich were all taken to account.

HIGHLIGHTS The discussion did not need coaxing this time around and most delved right in to share their experience and thanks that uterine fibroids were discussed. Even the young ladies, in find- ing out that myoma growth occurs once a female can reprod- uce, had shown interest and expressed gratitude towards the new information that was given. The health tips were proven to be helpful to the respondents, observing that most discussed on how to act on the advice and to incorporate the tips into their daily diet and living. It was truly refreshing to find the respon- dents so receiving of the program and also the team. It only showed how information can really help those wo are in need by just simply preparing them.

The respondents then continued to speak up and give words of thanks to the team and program. Most thought of how useful the brochures were in sustaining what was taught by the four episodes and forums held and will be kept as a momentum from the team. There was more questions depending on which bro- chure fascinated which reader but it was clear that the questions were posed to add more to the understanding that was already there. The respondetns, even after eating and listening to music, were engrossed in reading and still continued to ask about what was discussed in the radio program and seemed like they did not want for the forum to end. At last though, they were coaxed into picture-taking which all the respondents enjoyed.

For ourlast day inMambuaya,we, the team, and the respon-dents had decidedto make an affair ofthe last day and do amini celebration after-wards. The team had pre-pared heavier snack andreprinted the previous bro-chures to redistribute to therespondents. The productionwent through smoothly and wasmet with great interest. The scipt-writer reiterated on the points ofpossible causes for myoma and themerits of dieting and exercise in orderto prevent the growth myoma in the ute-rus. The main theme for this episode wasto remind and to hopefully instill in themthat “Prevention is indeed the best Cure” which in some cases was pretty much under-stood by the respondents. A few of the audienceahd mentioned of how prevention was key tostaying healthy and was enough for the facilitatorsto know that they did understand what was beingtaught the past four episodes. It was a surprise and asincere delight for the team to realize that they werereally intereseted in learning and therefore led to themdoing exactly just that.

For our last episode, most of the list-eners were women and it occurred to

the team to do an extensive researchon the common problems women

have in aging and what concernedmost of the female audience. We had interviewed doctors on the risk, causes and cures

for myoma, or what was more medically known as uterine

fibroids, in the hopes ofhelping the women of the

barangay of Mambuaya.

DISCUSS

LISTENThe radio program focused on health issues within the communitythat ail most of the residents servingas our respondents and not only wasprevention and cure given, there wasalso a set of tips or advoce that they allcould apply to their daily way of living.Respondents were keen in listening andtook notes despite the brocures given to them.

The respondents paid attention although therewere times they lost focus and busied themselveswith reading the brochures instead of the program. But all in all, learning can be observed from the pointof discussion they had between one another.

Most of the topics of discussion between respon- dents involved the health issues discussed and was further focused on discussing amongst themselves about the symptoms that apply to or were observed from the experience of others The discussions took longer when it came to the recapping the episode they listened to due to the fact that audiences would follow up with questions or pipe with their own account of similar situations they found themselves in with understanding dawning on them after compar- ison of the symptoms described and their own dealings. Since most of our audience was comprised of elder women and house-wives, discussions took longer than estimated by our team because they would share annecdotes of their familiy’s well- fare and discuss amongst themselves tips and insights with some referring to what was dis- cussed or what was provided by the brochures at hand. Discussion was civilized and with great and considerable inputs from the audience. If their were inquiries that the team felt were not confident enough to answer by ourselves. The answers would come as a follow up in the next episode by consulting experts in the medical and nutritional field, later discussed with them.

Page 21: MAMBO RADYO: Mambuaya Health Radio

We recommend the community members of Barangay Mambuaya to continue doing forums not only regarding their health, but also about the different issues of con cern that they have because by continuing to do such; they can be able to find solutions to their problems. I It could also be recommended that the City Health Office of Barangay Mambuaya with the help of their local government unit to have a community project that involves doctors hav ing weekly or monthly check-up to the peo ple of Barangay Mambuaya and giving free supply of medicine to the people espe cially to the ones who need medicinal care the most.

ACTION PLAN Now that the radio forum is over, the team suggested to the group to keep in touch with the barangay, participate in the activities of the health center. We’ve also handed them brochures for each episode so they can rem- ember each lesson per episode. Also, attached to the brochure is compilation of recommen- ded recipes with complete instructions.

Although, there is no certainty that our group would continue after this subject, but what they will do is just keep in touch with the city not because they should, but because there are certain opportunities that would help them and their society. They should continue their own forums with themselves, always update about their issues in their homes so that they can address this to their local government. Probably a sort of periodical checking up with the society from time to time if our group would be allowed to.Having spent time with the locals in Mambuaya and doing research on needs and problems they face in their barangay, it opened

INSIGHTS The act of volunteerism is the act of true service.

I did not took the radio forum as a requirement for this course instead I took it as a volunteer work. But somehow, along our road to our radio forum I was nearly to breakdown and forget our goals in the team because of some problems and diffi-culties we had encountered in our journey but, I told myself that everything, all the hard works, the efforts, the time that we had already invested will be useless. So, I pushed myself and my members to have longer patience and understanding regard-less of the distance of our community, which my members loved to. The experienced I had will never be paid off of anything because truly it was one of a kind. The simple thank you’s and smiles they showed to us were really enough for us to say that, everything was worth it. Going to the community like 30 minutes and plus with all the bad weather still we pursued it because we know that people were waiting for us and ready to listen and interact with us. Now, we realized the importance of being informed and aware of what is going on in our society because we see ourselves to them, they have this kind of unity and bond that whatever problem will come to them still like a bamboo they will just go with the air and bounce back like an arrow hitting the bulls eye.

INSIGHTS The main issue of concern for the people living in Barangay Mambuaya is about their health. That is because lots of people there have different diseases and they’re looking for the right medicine to cure those diseases. They also want to know if what is the best thing to do in order for them not to acquire any of those diseases. So I think the community members of Barangay Mambuaya should fol-low the health advices that they have heard from the doctors that we have inter-viewed, consult a doctor or go to the health center if they feel something different in their body, take the medicines prescribed by their doctors, observe proper hy-giene, drink 8 or more glasses of water a day and eat the right kinds of food such as fruits and vegetables because at the end of the day, these all will be for their own good. Lastly, they should really take good care of their health because as the saying goes, health is wealth. I am hoping that they will continue to have forums regarding their health so that they can be able to find answers to their questions regarding their health. I also hope that we can go back there very soon and do radio forums for them again so that in one way or another, we can be able to help the people of their community even in our small ways.

INSIGHTS Having spent time with the locals in Mambuaya and doing research on needs and problems they face in their barangay, it opened me to thoughts on our society. First is that they have issues commonly found in the city but affects greatly in the society. Issues that for a common city folk won’t deeply affect the whole system in which we are greatly accustomed with. It gave me the sudden realization on how society in the city is so detached with each other, how unconnected we are from each others relationships. Although someone told me that in that rural society, everyone is said to be trained to cooperate with certain programs or events such us the similarities like ours, i still think that they are closely tied with each other than compared to the city’s society. The idea of camaraderie to them and family is very important that when they talked about their problems, you usually hear them talk about every-one’s problems in general. Rarely you hear the word “I” or “myself ”, often times they talk about their problems addressed to everyone and that’s something.

Spending 4 Sundays in Barangay Mambuaya taught me the power of volun-teerism and the power of the community. Volunteering your heart, using your skill for the good of the community is an excellent and kind move. It’s different in the city and in this barangay. In the city, we have what we need everywhere, we have the re-sources but sometimes we neglect it, we have the direct solutions from the internet but we just disregard it. In this barangay, they do not have much when in terms of resources, I’ve ap-preciated their effort and their passion in coming to the 4 episodes of the radio fo-rum. We, the team, served as doctors, presenting solutions and explanations to the community. We also served as the bridge, connecting them to what’s happening in our city through our news segment in the forum.

INSIGHTS

From a major output grade, my approach was to do what should be done. No more no less. But the longer we worked for and with the people of Mambuaya, even in that small portion of residents, I found the purpose of the whole production. To listen, discuss and act. Simple as this may be, when people are misinformed or lacking in information, it can prove very hard. The only bright side fo this is that the residents make for the lack of information with their thirst for it. It can be really seen in how they discuss, inquire about conditions and concerns. Even though our radio program was just a small step they gladly took with us, seeing from their attitude, a program that will help sutain that interest to learn will go a long way for the people there. It was truly refreshing to find peopkle who help themselves instead of sitting around waiting for bits and scraps of informatio n that get tossed their way. Their appreciation of the brochures prove that they are not satisfied with just being idle learners but are interested in being active participants in their own learning. This is a good thing, considering that with the information the program has provided them and the facilities available to their small barangay, I will not be surprised if they come up with their own program and that if God willing they ask for my help, I will not think twice in lending them just that. And maybe more.
