The museum houses key works, including noteworthy examples of international importance, from the national collection of Malta. A conspicuous number of works originally belonged to the Order of the Knights of St John and come from the Magisterial Palace, the various auberges in which the knights took up residence, churches belonging to the Order, and the other places falling directly under the administration of the Order. To this original nucleus were added important acquisitions affected through the local and international market, bequests by public spirited individuals and donations. The architecture of the building is an important example of the mid-eighteenth century late baroque style in Malta boasting one of the finest main staircases to be seen on the island.

Malta have embarked on a project to develop a new museum typology, purposely created for Malta, MUZA, which shall be Malta’s national institution for the arts. The acronym stands for National Museum of Fine Arts but also refers to the Muses and MUŻA is the Maltese word for inspiration.

Edward Lear (1812-1888)

Room 18 has scenes of Malta by 19th-century British artists, including lovely paintings of Gozo by poet Edward Lear, and a small Turner watercolour depicting a Grand Harbour scene (1830) – the museum's pride and joy. Curiously enough, Turner never visited Malta; the work is based on scenes painted by another artist.
