Each year approximately 1000 people come to see The Malmesbury Nativity at the Abbey. Young professional Wiltshire actors, carols led by a live band, mulled wine, cider and Christmas nibbles, and the authentic biblical Nativity story told by four characters from Malmesbury’s history: Aldhelm, William, Eilmer & Hannah Twynnoy. One hour of amazing Christmas joy for all ages.

Wed 23rd December at 7pm. Christmas Eve at 1pm, 3pm & 5pm. Tickets (Adults £2.50, Children free) are available on the door.

V I C A R ' S W E L C O M E I’d like to warmly welcome you to Malmesbury Abbey for tonight’s service of Nine Lessons and Carols by Candlelight. The Abbey Nine Lessons might well be an important part of your Christmas each year, the moment when Christmas really begins. Or this might be your very first time inside our 12th century walls. Regardless, you are very welcome and I hope tonight’s service, one of immense beauty and joy, allows you a brief window to consider afresh how the birth of Jesus Christ changed the course of human history. With the many distressing global events of 2015, and sadly no doubt 2016 too, a candlelit service with transcendent music, ancient readings and joyous carols might on the surface appear to be ninety minutes of escapism. And perhaps that is no bad thing in itself, a moment of peace in troubled times. But our nine ancient readings, lessons, reveal to us something quite different. The baby is born in a manger, the light comes to the increasing darkness, and God is in the midst of us, not turning his back on the reality a broken world. On that holy night in Bethlehem Mary held the Christ in her arms, that He might hold all of human history in His. So may the mystery and the beauty of this night be a rich blessing to you. • Please secure all loose hair and clothing, and when candles are being lit please take great care when passing the light to others
