MAllORCA’S

lEARN MORE AbOUT THE RICH HISTORy OF OUR MAgNIFICANT HOST ISlAND

It is about time we take a look at the rich his-tory of Mallorca! Iria took the time to outline

some milestones that made the island what it is today.

As the largest of the Balearic Islands in the Mediter-ranean Sea, Mallorca has survived the rule of many different empires and cultures. Therefore it may be said that the history of Mallorca is as long as its coastline.

The formation of the Balearic Islands is assumed to have taken place around 149 million years ago. At first, Mallorca was actually attached to the peninsu-la, slowly detached and became what it is now, an island.

Page 5: Mallorca 2016 Media: The Second Issue

Like other major islands of the Mediter-ranean, Mallorca has attracted a cornu-copia of conquerors, invaders, settlers and tourists, who have all contributed to its richness and vital history. For most Mallorcans, history didn’t really begin until the Catalans retook the island from the Moors in the 13th century. However, the first islander is dated between 1300 and 1000 BC by experts. The significant amount of weapons found on site gives evidence of the violence that the island experienced before becoming “the is-land of Calm”.

The balearic archipelago is located in the middle of great trading routes that criss-crossed the Mediterranean Sea. The winners of the Punic wars, the Romans, organised an expedition to conquer and settle Mallorca in the 123BC, leaded by Quinto Cecilio Metelo. Therefore, Mallor-ca remained under the Roman Empire’s influence for five and a half centuries. After a few more centuries of “ups and downs” under the domination of Van-dals and Byzantines the Arab empire undertook attacks for 200 years at the beginning of the 8th century. In the 902 the entire archipelago was annexed to the Emirate of Cordoba.

HISTORyLet’s not forget about Palma, Mallorca’s capital city. Palma has a population of 325,000 and a sizeable port, as well as a rich mix of history, culture and night-life. The city we can visit nowadays is a result of all the different cultures that conquered the island. Their contribu-tions shaped mallorcan customs such as the traditional costumes, and the “ensaïmada” a cake always accompanied with chocolate, which became popular among the middle and upper classes. There are also some more recent tra-ditions like the “dimonis” or “correfocs”, which consist of a really spectacular dance around the city, involving the crowd jumping around the street with music, fireworks, making as much noise as possible…

There are some components of life that shape us, and make us ourselves. One of them is our history, so we need to pro-tect and remember it.

Page 6: Mallorca 2016 Media: The Second Issue

recent debates are questioning the

pertinence of the eu. do we still need a european union? have its interests deviated from its original ones? In this article, ari and stefanos analyse one of the most controversial topics our european society faces currently: euroscepticism.

Although not a new concept, Euroscepticism has been increasingly popular through the economic crisis that stroked EU along with the rest of the western world, changing public perspective on many subjects. On one hand, the distribution of resources amongst EU mem-bers and the amount of (financial) contribution to the Union has raised concerns as to the actual benefit of membership status for countries that are considered to have a significantly larger proportion of input. On the oth-er hand, austerity measures and memorandums, aiming to set back on their feet disfunctional economies, have created social outrage against the Union which is then perceived as an “oppresive” institution that interferes with national affairs.

The truth behind Euroscepticism

Now, eurosceptism is based on valuable arguments. Countries as Germany or the UK do contribute more in terms of financial input and redistribution is certainly ine-qual. But in return the common market has boosted their exports, leading to more profits. As to countries facing a great financial crisis, while it is neccessary for their econ-omies to get back on track and debts to be paid back, the rapid implementation of such measures greatly affect

citizen’s life plans, and doesn’t leave enough time for them to adapt, to a point where their survival is at play. In addition, the effectiveness of these policies has been questioned by some significant economists and experts.

What has the EU offered so far?

Despite the large amount of critics the EU has faced when talking about Europe promotion, many steps have been taken in order to make citizens aware of its importance, such as advertising what specific measures have been voted. Several youth organisations, promotional cam-paigns (Sexy Europe) or local delegations of the Europe-an Commission (Europa Direct) where created in order to make it easy for citizens to access this institution pre-viously blamed its technocracy. However, there is still a long way to go until we create not only an institutional union, but also a social and economic cooperation truly uniting the population.

Eurocepticism is not necessarily is bad thing

On the contrary, euroscepticism shouldn’t be considered as only negative. It means that people do care about the issue, debating on finding solutions to the EU’s flaws. It

6

HOW AND WHy DID WE ARRIvE HERE?

Page 7: Mallorca 2016 Media: The Second Issue

is actually really important that society questions its structures and, if needed, advocates for deconstruction of the EU. We do not have a problem with Euros-cepticism; it is only a symptom of so-ciety that needs change and complains about some of the measures taken.

Of course, the European Union has weaknesses. No one would argue against that argument. But, is it worth to give upand return to a world where states act independently, following their own interests? And what if, instead of dismissing the structure, we try to focus

on the agents and improve the weaker aspects in order to make it, not only efficient, but also a pure representa-tion of every Member State values? The decision, as always, is in our hands. The question is, are we going to take action?

EUROSCEPTICISMA THREAT OR OPPORTUNITy?

WHAT DO yOU THINK?In a session, we sometimes feel like we only get to voice our opinion on one single topic. During General Assembly, we nev-er have time to say everything that we need to say, which can be bittersweet given the wide range of fascinating topics that we discuss. For this reason, Oriol has asked you, delegates, to tell us what you think about the topics discussed in Mallorca 2016. Here are the results:

8

ITRE IShould net neutrality exist in all situations? FEMMDo you think women should take a

part-time job after having a baby?

JURIDo you think that a driverless car would be safer than a car operated

by a human being? LIBE IAre trans and intersex people given equal opportunities to access hous-

ing, social and medical services?

Page 9: Mallorca 2016 Media: The Second Issue

ITRE IIIs innovation essential to economic success? ENVIDo you think the EU should have a

Member States-wide structure for mental health?

LIBE IIDo you think that investing

money in social integration of refugees should be a priority

in the refugee crisis? CULTDo you think that a more digitalised education would have a negative im-pact on Member States’ education?

The last few days have passed by as if it was a dream. When I think about the first day, it seems like it was a month

away, but the truth is that it only was 3 days ago! The National Selection Con-ference of Mallorca has not only offered us a great experience, but also amazing memories, valuable new friendships and, why not, different perspectives to comprehend the problematics of our society. I learnt a lot! Today, I will talk about what this experience has brought me.

I never paid much attention to group dynamics before. Whenever at school, I never bothered trying to understand everyone’s point of view on the sub-jects, we just split the tasks up man-age by ourselves. However, in EYP, it is completely different. We have to know each other, not only in order to create a good general mood, but also to identi-fy our common interests. Some games encouraged us to come up with shared solutions and include everyone’s per-spective on the topic. In a way, EYP has taught me, and my “fellow delegatos”, how to work in a group and develop my social skills.

Another really important fact about the session is that we all got to discuss is-sues that we weren’t necesserily aware of ! We worked a lot, with methods we were not used to. In fact, it has been a

lot more difficult than I had expected, but in the end we managed to achieve our goals. which, without hard-work, would not have been possible. I also want to take this opportunity to thank our chairpersons, who undertook a a titanic job with us, not only providing us with great informa-tion, but also helping us overcoming any issue or obstacle we had to face during the whole process.

I would lie if I said it was all about work-ing and doing academic stuff. Actually, one of the most surprising things from this experience is the amount of fun in-cluded in the activities.. The organisers and the media team made sure that we had the time of our lifes during breaks and night activities. Without them, this experience would have been really

different. The energy and effort they put in each of those activities helped us feel comfortable from the very first minute. Even teachers had fun, despite their lack of dancing in The 2.We finally understood that EYP is not about competing, but growing and fac-ing challenges. Before the session, we had been told that some of us would get selected for an international ses-sion. However, we completely forgot about it during the Committee work. We were having so much fun and were too busy to even bother about that. In the end, we arrived to the conclusion that, whether we would get selected or not, we had a great time and no one could take away all the things we learned and went through these days.

To wrap up, I could tell that, after all, the lack of sleep, the extra cup of coffee and the hard-work was worth it. Un-doubtedly, I would do it again, I would

also recommend EYP to everyone.

So, it’s time to say good-bye now. I hope everybody enjoyed the experience as much as I did and, who

knows, have the chance to attend an-other EYP session soon.

Lots of love,

The Delegato

need for affIlIatIon

12

One of the things that struck me the most when I got involved in EYP almost 5 years ago was that most people are very

open-minded, learning that prejudices about other cultures are un-founded. EYP even helps you to overcome prejudices you may have towards other people.

Page 13: Mallorca 2016 Media: The Second Issue

SurvivalIt is a very natural human tendency to judge things and people based on their outer appear-ance on the first impression. Thus prejudices tend to be wrong because the first impression is often a very superficial one. In pre-historic era, this instinct of fast decision-making helped us to survive. Undoubtedly, it was always safer to be hostile towards new things and run away, such as your first encounter with a potentially deadly animal.

A basic instinct in a modern worldIn our modern world, this hostility has bad, sometimes even horrific effects for us, e. g. xen-ophobia and war. Furthermore, it is important to consider that our attitudes and perspectives on a situation deeply influences it back. When you assume that something will be bad, the prob-ability that it will actually turn out to be bad is very high. Sociologists call this the self-fulfilling prophecy. On the other hand, when you enter a situation with a positive, unprejudiced mindset, you are more likely to get the same vibes back from the persons you meet.

13

Whenever you point your index finger at somebody you point with three fingers back at yourself.

A single big EYP sessionMost of EYP participants are in such a mindset because everybody is joining our organisation voluntarily. Consequently, the frequency of positive encounters is much higher than in the “real life” where people often are forced to work, learn or live together. As for my part I could only state that the EYP helped me a lot to develop a less biased and more positive mindset when it comes to meeting new people and facing new situations. But not only within the EYP world. I even experienced a positive personality shift altering other parts of my social life.

In conclusion, it is my utmost concern to encourage you to reflect on the way you are judging people and the mindset you are entering situations with. So, here there is some advice: always strive to con-sider both sides a story, pay less attention to the outer appearance, act like the world is a single big EYP session.

Page 14: Mallorca 2016 Media: The Second Issue

Historic overviewThe winners of WW2 divided Korea in two spheres of influence, with the USΑ administering the south and USSR the north, where a communist regime was es-tablished. Based on a Stalinist model, with a centrally planned economy and a military administration that run the country.

The country’s economy, based on heavy industry, mainly mining and military build-up, was rising un-til the 1970s, when swift changes in global economy resulted to North Korean economy falling under and relying on international aid ever since, while its peo-ple have been suffering from severe famines and cli-mate disasters like floods and droughts.

In the meantime, North Korea’s development of its nuclear programme, and therefore violations of re-spective international treaties, led to sanctions by the UN and the global community making living con-ditions even worse.

From times to times, North Korea has been showing off its military capabilities by launching test drives or releasing reports. While no major incident has occurred, it has always posed a concern, especially after the latest nuclear tests.

UNDERSTANDINg

KIM

Page 15: Mallorca 2016 Media: The Second Issue

Equality and human rightsNorth Korea is a highly patriarchal country when it comes to gender relations (women are literally sup-posed to take care of everything in the house) and social equality exists applies only between people of the same class – although in theory there aren’t any – apart from the fact that (almost) anyone is equally unprotected against state arbitrariness. Moreover, human rights and personal freedoms are a subject of constant violation by the regime, a fact that may not affect the EU directly but it goes against our values and beliefs that we have set our lives upon, part of whichom commits us to work towards the improvement of the other peoples’ life status and the empowerment of democratic values not only domestically but wherever there are people being oppressed by the lack of them. Who and Why supports North Korea today and why? Therefore, who backs North .Korea today? After the fall of the Eastern bloc and Communism, the main (and only) supporter of the regime is its northern neighbour, China, who supplies them with food and

energy supplies as well as everything else that keeps the country running, except for nuclear and heavy military equipment, as of recent international pres-sure. The reasons for doing so are mostly geopolit-ical. By maintaining control over North .Korea, Chi-na has created a buffer-zone for US troops, keeping their bases away from their borders (in South Korea) and therefore downgrading US ability to put pres-sure on China. A comparable example: the US bases in Turkey pose a potential threat to Russia, since they are only 1061 km away from Russia’s the currentlat-est’s borders. Another reason concerns the big out-flow of North .Koreans that would cross the border with China, in a very short period of time, if the coun-try were to collapse.

ConclusionSo the real question is: Is China (and/or someone else) totally in control of the regime or is Kim truly unpredictable and capable of initiating a nuclear world war?

READ THIS IN CASE OF PED

Dear old and new members of EYP, we are all aware of the fact that every session has to come to an end, even the best ones. That is the moment when the infamous

syndrome known as Post EYP Depression (PED) sets in. It is the same moment when you realise how many amazing people you’ve connected with during the session and how quickly you have to let them go. Unfortunately, there is no way to cure it, but I’m writing this to you in hope that you’ll find some comfort in it when PED hits you hard.

First of all, I would like to remind you of how deeply and truly amazing each and every one of you is. You showed that by your ini-tiative to come here and dedicate your time

for social engagement, which proves that you care about our society. As long as there are young peo-ple like you, this world has nothing to worry about.

EYP is a wonderful group of people and you got a chance to see that during this session. Now you have a chance to join it, learn, grow, travel and meet many more incredible people. So do it.

Connect. Inspire and be inspired. Encourage. Share. Jump. Hunt. Explore. Dive in and fly away. Bring life to yourself. Say what you have to say. Even better, shout it out loud. Change the game. Worry less, focus more.

20

Page 21: Mallorca 2016 Media: The Second Issue

Remember the moments. Remember the plac-es. Remember the sounds. Remember the people. Most importantly, remember to enjoy every second of your life, because they are not something you are going to get back. So col-lect memories and keep them somewhere safe. One day, you will look back and remem-ber the feeling of sand under your feet during those April days at Palma. That is when you will understand what I’m talking about.

You might never feel the same sand again, but there are many things you haven’t felt, many songs you haven’t heard, many seas you haven’t

say what you have to say. even better, shout It out loud.

swam and many people you haven’t met. Some of those people will change your life. Find them, keep them and love them.We will all remember and miss the long nights filled with laughter and Spanish music, the streets of Palma, the burning sun and the orange trees. But remember one more thing – it doesn’t end here.

There are so many things for you left to dis-cover and EYP is there not only to give you an opportunity to do so, but to go along that road with you. All you have to do is record some nice songs to sing along the way and start the engine. It’s your turn now.

lOvESTORyI

I saw him from afar, shining in my future like a tender promise. He lingered in front of me as I approached him slowly, writing thousands of poems on the way to help me understand my heart. And once I touched

him I felt my soul bubble up inside my lungs like a quiet ecstasy.

IIThere he was, as still below my fingertips as a winter lake. He looked at

me openly, offering his warmth like a young doe offers her speckled skin to a deer. The blisters on my feet disappeared, exhaustion turned into

awe. The skies were bluer than sadness over our nest of love.

IIIThe goodbye seeped through our skin excruciatingly. Time crushed our souls together, reckless, until we became a swirl of troubled waters. We sweated the farewell out of our bodies, a cold odorless liquid that cover-ed us until we could not grab onto each other. We then turned our backs

and walked away, apologising stupidly – as if that could fix the pain.

- Oriol
