DEDICATION

This Analytical Hebrew Lexicon is dedicated to my students.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

I wish to acknowledge with gratitude the immense labour of Benjamin Davidson’s

‘Analytical Hebrew and Chaldee Lexicon’, first published in 1848 and also the

printed version of Codex Leningradensis B19a (L) with edited Masorah by the late

Professor G. E. Weil of ‘Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia’ (BHS), 1967-1977.

EXPLANATORY NOTES

The analytical lexical section uses the following symbols: *, **, +, ++. The symbol

* means that the word in question occurs once and once only in the Masoretic Text.

The symbol ** means that the word in question occurs ‘once’ with some limiting

qualification or further description. The symbol + means that an expression of two

or more words occurs once and once only in the Masoretic Text. The symbol ++

means that an expression of two or more words occurs ‘once’ but with some

limiting qualification or further description. The information for this has been taken

from the Masorah Parva of the Leningrad Codex B19a (L) as edited by G. E. Weil

and printed in Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (BHS). Readers are advised most

strongly to consult for themselves the Masorah Parva of BHS, where a hapax

legomenon (‘read once’) is denoted in the left or right margin by the letter ל with a

dot placed above it (abbreviated Aramaic meaning ‘once’). In addition, the Aramaic

word חד (‘one’) in the Masorah Parva may indicate that a word or expression in

Hebrew occurs once. In both cases, that word or expression in the Masoretic Text is

marked always by a circule i.e. a small circle which is placed above it. It should

be observed that not every occurrence of a hapax legomenon in the text is noted by

the Masorah Parva of Codex L. An example of this is יחמץ at Exodus 12:34 which

is a hapax legomenon but not marked as such by the Masorah Parva. For the

purposes of this lexicon, only the Masorah Parva of Codex L is followed.

Readers are advised also to take the English verses of the King James’ Version of

1611 as a general guide to English translation. Inspection of these verses readily

shows the extent to which the translators supplied words (in italics) not actually

present in the Hebrew and that certain Hebrew words can be and are now translated

with a different English word. Be assured, that none of this has any bearing upon

doctrine but it must be taken into account with regard to an appreciation of the

Hebrew text itself and its translation.
