GLOSSARY

CFM: Cubic feet per minute.

SCFM: Standard cubic feet perminute; a unit of measure of airdelivery.

PSIG: Pounds per square inchgauge; a unit of measure ofpressure.

CUT-IN PRESSURE: While themotor is off, air tank pressuredrops as you continue to useyour accessory or air tool. Whenthe tank pressure drops to acertain level the motor will restartautomatically re-started is called"cut-in pressure".

CUT-OUT PRESSURE: Whenyou turn on your air compressor,it begins to run, air pressure inthe air tank begins to build. Itbuilds to a certain pressurebefore the motor automaticallyshuts off - protecting your airtank from pressure higher thanits design rating. The pressure atwhich the motor shuts off iscalled "cut-out pressure".

DUTY CYCLE

All Makita manufactured aircompressors are recommendedto be operated on not more thana 50% duty cycle. This means anair compressor that pumps airmore than 50% of one hour isconsidered misuse because theair compressor is undersized forthe required air demand.

GENERAL

INFORMATION

This air compressor requires oil.Now you can enjoy all thebenefits of having an oillubricated professional aircompressor. When oil is changedregularly, it will give you long,trouble-free life.

Your air compressor can be usedfor operating paint spray guns, air tools, caulking guns, greaseguns, air brushes, sandblaster, inflating tires or spraying weedkillers, insecticides, etc. An airpressure regulator is supplied forthese applications.

Separate air transformers whichcombine the functions of airregulation and/or moisture anddirt removal should be usedwhere applicable.

ON-RECEIPT

INSPECTION

DAMAGE: Each air compressoroutfit is carefully tested andchecked before shipment. Withimproper handling, damage mayresult in transit and causeproblems with compressoroperation.

Immediately upon arrival, checkequipment for both concealedand visible damages to avoidexpenses being incurred tocorrect such problems. Thisshould be done regardless ofany visible signs of damage tothe shipping container. If this

Page 8: Makita Mac 5200

product was shipped directly toyou, report any damages to thecarrier and arrange for inspectionof goods immediately.

STORAGE

Before you store the aircompressor, make sure you dothe following: 1. Review the “Maintenance” and

“Operating Procedures”sections and performmaintenance as necessary. Besure to drain water from the air tank.

2. Protect the electrical cord andair hose from damage (such asbeing stepped on or run over). Store the air compressor in aclean and dry location.

DESCRIPTION OF

OPERATION

DRAIN VALVE: The drain valveis located at the bottom of theair tank and is used to draincondensation at the end of each use.

MOTOR THERMAL OVERLOADPROTECTOR: The electric motorhas a manual thermal overloadprotector. If the motor overheatsfor any reason, the thermaloverload protector will shut offthe motor. Turn pressure switchto the “off” position and wait forunit to cool before pushing thereset button and restarting thecompressor.

ON/AUTO - OFF SWITCH: Turnthis switch to “on” to provideautomatic power to the pressure

switch and to “off” to removepower when finished using thecompressor or when compressorwill be left unattended.

AIR INTAKE FILTER: This filter isdesigned to clean air coming intothe compressor pump. This filtermust always be clean and freefrom obstructions. See“Maintenance”.

AIR COMPRESSOR PUMP: Tocompress air, the piston movesup and down in the cylinder. Onthe down stroke, air is drawn inthrough the air intake valve. Theexhaust valve remains closed. On the upstroke of the piston, airis compressed. The intake valvecloses and compressed air isforced out through the exhaustvalve, through the outlet tube, through the check valve and intothe air tank. Useable air is notavailable until the compressorhas raised the air tank pressureabove that required at the airoutlet.

CHECK VALVE: When the aircompressor is operating, thecheck valve is “open”, allowingcompressed air to enter the airtank. When the air compressorreaches “cut-out” pressure, thecheck valve “closes”, allowing airpressure to remain inside the airtank.

PRESSURE SWITCHUNLOADING VALVE: Thepressure switch unloading valvelocated on the side of thepressure switch, is designed toautomatically releasecompressed air from thecompressor head and the outlettube when the air compressor

Page 9: Makita Mac 5200

Page 9

reaches “cut-out” pressure.PRESSURE SWITCH: Thepressure switch automaticallystarts the motor when the airtank pressure drops to thefactory set “cut-in” pressure. Itstops the motor when the airtank pressure reaches thefactory set “cut-out” pressure.

SAFETY VALVE: If the pressureswitch does not shut off the aircompressor at its “cut-out”pressure setting, the safety valvewill protect against high pressureby “popping out” at its factory setpressure (slightly higher than thepressure switch “cut-out” setting).

OUTLET PRESSURE GAUGE:The outlet pressure gaugeindicates the air pressureavailable at the outlet side of theregulator. This pressure iscontrolled by the regulator and isalways less or equal to the tankpressure. See “OperatingProcedures”.

TANK PRESSURE GAUGE: Thetank pressure gauge indicatesthe air pressure in the tank.

REGULATOR: The air pressurecoming from the air tank iscontrolled by the regulator knob.Turn the knob clockwise toincrease pressure and counter-clockwise to decrease pressure. To avoid minor re-adjustmentafter making a change inpressure setting, alwaysapproach the desired pressurefrom a lower pressure. Whenreducing from a higher to a lowersetting, first reduce to somepressure less than desiredpressure. Depending on the airrequirements of each particular

accessory, the outlet regulatedair pressure may have to beadjusted while you are operatingthe accessory.

INSTALLATION AND

BREAK-IN

PROCEDURES

LOCATION OF THE AIRCOMPRESSORLocate the air compressor in aclean, dry and well-ventilatedarea. The air filter must be keptclear of obstructions, which couldreduce air delivery of the aircompressor. The air compressorshould be located at least 12inches away from the wall orother obstructions that willinterfere with the flow of air. Theair compressor head and shroudare designed to allow for propercooling. If humidity is high, an airfilter can be installed on the airoutlet adapter to removeexcessive moisture. Follow theinstructions packaged with the airfilter for proper installation.

LUBRICATION AND OILCAUTION: Do not attempt tooperate this air compressorwithout first adding oil to thecrankcase. Serious damage willresult from even limited operationunless filled with oil and brokenin correctly. Make sure to closelyfollow initial start-up procedures.Compressor oil is provided; on alevel surface, please fill thecrankcase to proper levelindicated on the sight glass.

WARNING: Compressors areshipped without oil. A small

Page 10: Makita Mac 5200

Page 10

amount of oil may be present inthe pump upon receipt of the aircompressor. This is due tofactory testing and does notmean the pump contains oil.

CAUTION: Multi-Viscosity motoroils, like 10W 30, should not beused in an air compressor. Theyleave carbon deposits on criticalcomponents, thus reducingperformance and compressorlife. Use air compressor oil only.

Initial Start Up Procedure:1.Open the air receiver's drain

valve.2.Plug power supply cord into

correct power source.3.Run the compressor for a

minimum of twenty (20)minutes in the no-loadcondition to lubricate thebearings and pistons, and toseat the piston rings.

4.Close air receiver drain valve.Your compressor is now readyfor use.

Extension CordsTo avoid voltage drop, powerloss, and overheating of themotor, use extra air hose insteadof an extension cord. Lowvoltage can cause damage to themotor.

If an extension cord must beused:· Use only an approved 3-wire

extension cord that has a 3-blade grounding plug and a 3-slot receptacle that will acceptthe plug on the air compressor.

· Make sure the extension cordis in good condition.

PipingPlastic or PVC pipe is notdesigned for use withcompressed air. Regardless of itsindicated pressure rating, plasticpipe can burst from air pressure.Use only metal pipe for airdistribution lines. If a pipe line is necessary, usepipe that is the same size, orlarger than, the air tank outlet.Piping that is too small willrestrict the flow of air. If piping isover 100 feet long, use the nextlarger size. Bury undergroundlines below the frost line andavoid pockets wherecondensation can gather andfreeze. Apply pressure beforeunderground lines are covered tomake sure all pipe joints are freeof leaks.

Grounding InstructionWARNING: Risk of electricshock! In the event if a shortcircuit, grounding reduces therisk of shock by providing anescape wire for the electriccurrent. This air compressormust be properly grounded. The air compressor is equippedwith a cord having a groundingwire with an appropriate

Page 11: Makita Mac 5200

Page 11

grounding plug. The plug mustbe used with an outlet that hasbeen installed and grounded inaccordance with all local codesand ordinances. The outlet musthave the same configuration asthe plug. DO NOT USE ANADAPTER.

Inspect the plug and cord beforeeach use. Do not use if there aresigns of damage.

DANGER: Improper groundingcan result in electrical shock. Donot modify the plug that hasbeen provided. If it does not fitthe available outlet, the correctoutlet should be installed by aqualified electrician.
