Polyrad ® XT Wire and CableApplications

Brand Rex Polyrad XTlocomotive and rapid transit wire

and cable is widely used indemanding environments

throughout the U.S. and the world.

It is found extensively on all types of:

• Freight cars

• Rapid transit cars

• Heavy-rail and light-rail cars

• Diesel-electric locomotives

• Wayside equipment

• Off-road vehicles

Polyrad XT wire and cable is specifically designedfor both original equipment and retrofit use in

power and control circuits, and in motor leads.Superior heat, flexibility and abrasion resistance,

combined with reduced size, simplifies theinstallation of Polyrad XT cables and permits higher

ampacities.

Brand Rex Polyrad XT cables are fully tested to meet allapplicable specifications and provide long dependable

service life in transit, off-road and diesel-poweredlocomotives.

Product DescriptionBrand Rex Polyrad XT is a unique insulation system which utilizes thermosetting polyolefin compound cross-linked by radiation.

This process produces:

• Maximum flame-retardant

• Oil and chemical resistance

• Low-smoke properties

• Outstanding mechanical toughness

Polyrad XT’s excellent overall balance of properties is not attainable with conventionalinsulating systems. Polyrad XT single conductor locomotive and rapid transit car cables arerated either 110°C or 125°C and supplied in both 600 Volt and 2000 Volt constructions.

Insulation System and ConstructionBrand Rex Polyrad XT insulation features a highly engineered and refined polyolefinformulation used in conjunction with soft annealed, tinned copper conductors perASTM B-33. This insulation system combines outstanding flame retardance withexcellent moisture-stable electrical values. The construction is further enhancedby radiation cross-linking, which transforms the original thermoplastic into arugged thermosetting material. The result is a compound with excellentthermal stability–it will not soften or flow atelevated temperatures.

• Polyrad XT has increased toughness

• Greater resistance to cut-through

• Superior oil resistance

• Excellent low-temperature performance

• Excellent flexibility

Product Features and BenefitsPolyrad XT wire and cables combine superior properties andperformance for locomotive, rapid transit and off-roadequipment applications.

• 110°C & 125°C temperature rating for long life, higherampacities and protection from thermal overloads(single wires)

• Maximum flame-retardant as demonstrated by ULVW-1 Vertical Wire Flame Test and for multi-conductor cables, the IEEE 383 (70,000 & 210,000BTU/hr.) and IEEE 1202 (70,000 BTU/hr.)

• Excellent oil and chemical resistance

• Maximum dependability and mechanicaltoughness

• Higher ampacities and simplifiedinstallations made possible by smalloutside diameters, flexible stranding andinsulation

StandardsPolyrad XT cables are manufactured, tested and inspected inaccordance with the latest issue of the following standards:

AAR RP-585 Wiring and Cable Specification

ASTM B-33 Tinned Soft or Annealed Copper Wire

ASTM D-149 Test for Dielectric Breakdown Voltage and DielectricStrength of Electrical Insulating Materials atCommercial Power Frequencies

ICEA S-95-658 Rubber Insulated Wire and Cable

ICEA S-95-658 Cross-Linked Thermosetting Polyethylene InsulatedWire and Cable for the Transmission and Distributionof Electrical Energy

UL 44 Standard for Rubber Insulated Wire and Cable

IEEE 1202 Standard for Flame Testing of cables for use in cabletray within Industrial and Commercial occupancies

Polyrad® is a registered tradename of General Cable.
