Making Observations of Matter
What do chemists do?
ObservationsUse the procedures of pages 18 and 19 in
the Small Scale Lab Manual to make observations of the five different examples of matter.
Use the hand lens to better visualize both the macroscopic and microscopic levels of matter.
Make sure to record your observations on the table provided (and attach the table into your journal).
HypothesesFor each other five cases, write a hypothesis
to explain your observations.1. What is the structure of the inside of the
newspaper?2. What determines the shape of the crystals?3. How does water change the rock salt to
cause it to conduct and electric current?4. How are the attractive forces different in
water compared to mineral oil?5. What caused iodine to react differently in
water than in mineral oil?
QuestionsFor each of the five cases, write as least one question you still have about the composition and behavior of matter.
