When you’re at work, travelling or at home, it’s easy to focus on what you can see. But behind the obvious lies a world of intricate mechanical and electrical engineering – to make buildings work.

From rail to commercial buildings, healthcare to defence, we’ve got the experience to provide you with the solution you need.

The following pages give a taste of our work and achievements.

Healthcare We have a wealth of experience with hospital and healthcare projects providing cost-effective, energy efficient solutions. At King’s Mill Hospital in Nottingham, our team installed the mechanical and electrical services and everything from fire alarms to a hydrotherapy pool. Our services included all the building management and security systems.

Custodial Our contribution to creating the new HMP Thameside in London helped the prison achieve a world first – an ‘outstanding’ BREEAM environmental accreditation for the design stage. We installed a host of green features, including a waste vegetable oil bio-fuel boiler, on-site food composting and water-efficient toilets. This is just one example from our extensive prison portfoilio.

Defence We work extensively with the Ministry of Defence (MoD). Projects include installing mechanical and electrical systems on 36 buildings at Rock Barracks in Woodbridge, Suffolk, home to 600 engineers. We also carry out day-to-day maintenance at the MoD headquarters in Whitehall, London.

Education During a 14-week fast-track programme, we carried out the mechanical, electrical and public health fit-out at the University of Arts London in King’s Cross.

Unique requirements at the Central Saint Martins campus included specialist drains for the ceramics workshops and compressed air for the jewellery workbenches. We also installed special dye-vat units for the students studying fabrics.

• 19,000 metres of pipework, laid over 12 weeks

• 7,000 metres of electrical containment laid over eight weeks

• 4,000 power points, fitted over 14 weeks

• 3,600 data points, fitted in 14 weeks

• 3,500 lights, installed in six weeks

7

We have decades of experience installing services in commercial buildings, including some of the UK’s tallest and most iconic structures.

We fitted out The Gherkin, the famous London landmark at 30 St Mary Axe. The team installed everything from the electrical network to the fire alarms and air conditioning. The pipework riser modules were made off-site at our

fabrications factory, and installed as construction of the building went on. We also fitted all the building’s chillers, boilers and cooling towers.

At 180 metres-tall, The Gherkin is one of London’s tallest buildings. This unique project had many unusual features. The design at the top of the building meant services had to be installed in very small spaces.

The Winnersh and Jacobs buildings are situated in one of the most sustainable business parks in the UK. The four-story buildings provide high-quality, flexible office space, with high levels of daylight, and low energy costs. The team fitted out the electrical, mechanical and public health services throughout, which included prefabricated four pipe pipework modules and a roof boiler plant room.

Installing energy-efficient features in existing buildings can dramatically reduce utility bills – and we can help you do that without making a capital investment.

Green building encompasses an ever-changing collection of technology, methods and materials. We are experts in green retrofit of existing buildings, to improve the energy performance of your building.

These measures can help you reduce energy and water consumption, saving money and cutting your carbon footprint. We will help you select the energy-saving measures that best suit your business and achieve your objectives.

Evidence shows green measures can improve the working environment, reduce absenteeism and enhance productivity.

Improving energy efficiency

Brent Civic CentreWorking with a London council, we have set new standards in green construction. The Brent Civic Centre, next to Wembley Stadium, is the greenest public building in the UK, (at the time of publication) having achieved a BREEAM environmental assessment ‘outstanding’ rating.

A 33 per cent reduction in carbon emissions is being achieved through a number of energy-saving technologies, including solar shading and combined cooling, heating and power which uses waste fish oil for fuel.

Hollywood HouseSkanska’s green retrofit of Hollywood House in Woking received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum status, the highest-ever score for an office fit-out from the US Green Building Council.

The project won the Time-proven M&E Installation of the Year at the H&V News awards 2013. It also played a key part in helping SRW win the low-carbon excellence award at the Construction News Specialists Awards 2013.

• Plan and test your design in a virtual world, reducing defects

• Up-to-date drawings and specifications available in the field

• Better safety information that’s easier to share

• Faults and defects fixed more quickly

Extraordinary service

Computer modellingSkanska is embracing the latest technology to make your project as efficient as possible. Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a way of creating an accurate three-dimensional virtual version of your project – in every detail.

By producing a three-dimensional model in advance of construction, we make sure that every aspect of the design is right before we get on site. We can test the placement of every pipe, fitting and cable to ensure a smooth and efficient installation.

The technology links up with mobile devices in the field, such as iPads, enabling people on site to access the model and the latest plans. This translates into big cost savings from dramatically fewer defects, and a shorter installation period.

Mobile technology also speeds up the quality assurance and sign-off processes. It cuts down on paperwork and provides evidence that faults have been fixed, all at the press of a button.

Woodlands SchoolBuilding information modelling (BIM) played a key role in the development of this new school in Essex. Using hugely detailed three-dimensional computer models we were able to complete the project more quickly and effectively – and cut costs at the same time.

Our pioneering approach, linking the BIM software to those in the field, made sure resources were in the right place, at the right time, to deal with every situation. Even collecting as-built data was easier, because the information was collected as the trade contractors did their work.

The team’s work was recognised at the British Construction Industry Awards 2013, when Woodlands School was named BIM project application of the year.

SRW was named Wates Partner of the Year 2013 for its use of BIM on the redevelopment of Southampton University’s Boldrewood Campus.

21

Efficient off-site manufacturingWe help you achieve more for less by turning the traditional idea of a construction project on its head.

By making components off-site, we can lower your costs and deliver a higher-quality result. While this happens, other work continues on the main site, helping to make the project more efficient.

Production takes place in a safe and controlled environment, cutting safety risks on your project. The prefabricated items are then delivered to site at just the right time.

Employing these techniques gives you greater cost certainty. This approach also helps to minimise the impact on the environment, reducing on-site waste.

St BotolphsA striking 14-storey office and retail development, St Botolphs is on a 1.25-acre island site at Aldgate in the heart of the City of London. Key to the success of the project was minimising disruption in this busy, urban environment.

To keep the project on track, much of the mechanical and electrical equipment was built off site at our fabrications factory. For example, the packaged plant rooms were put together in the factory environment then hoisted into place on the roof of the building.
