Making a Carnival Mask out of Cardboard, Modroc and Mixed Media. 

 

 

Materials 

You will need stiff, but malleable cardboard, withies or sticks, modroc, paint and optional decorative elements.  For sticking you will need masking tape, P.V.A. glue, wire and staples. 

Tools 

You will need scissors, craft knives and mat (optional)and a good stapler. 

Mask Template 

To make life a bit easier, architect, Giorgio Ceccarelli, has worked with AccessArt to make a template mask which will help you get the proportions of the face right and you can use to start your masks off. Simply print out the mask template from your computer – link to PDF ‐ sites.  

 

This mask was inspired by the Carnival in Venice but feel free to use this as a starting point and modify and change the template as much as you like to suit themes and topics in your class room. Make your mask individual and do run away with your own ideas or make your own masks from scratch! 

 

 There are three patterns to print and then cut out:  The face (with eye holes suitable for a child aged 6 to 11),  Noses (choose from a big nose, little nose or a beak), Optional extra decorative pieces which can be adapted to represent horns or ears. 

Use the template pattern as a stencil to draw out your mask. Use any card, but make sure it’s thick enough to take the weight of the modroc that you will use in the final stage of this mask making process. 

You can use masking tape to hold the pattern in place while you draw around it. 

 

Cut Out Your Mask 

You will notice on your template fold marks and cut marks. There are also two marks for you to cut out slits to insert a stick to hold the finished mask to your face. 

You can either use scissors or a craft knife to cut out your mask. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Folding Your Mask to Make it 3D 

You will notice a cut mark from the side of your mask. Cut along this line and then fold the two edges together. You will see you mask will suddenly take form. 

Use masking tape and staples to hold the shape together. 

 

 

Cut out the slits for the stick. 

Insert your stick and if necessary add a few extra staples or masking tape to hold it in place. 

Now attach the nose. You’ll need to use the template pattern again or make your own nose. Fold along the lines. 

 

 

 

Using Modroc and Decorating Your Mask 

Modroc is a versatile material and great for making sculptural effects and giving strength to your mask. It is also a great material for joining sections together. 

At first you’ll find it a bit fiddly, but you’ll soon work out how to use it. Just be patient and keep going. 

Top tip! 

Make sure you get all your modroc cut and ready before you set out. 

Give yourself plenty of space and protect tables with newspaper. 

Make sure you have a bowel of clean water at the ready. 

 

Dip the modroc quickly in the water and then apply to your mask making sure that you rub it in to make a smooth texture as you go along. 

 

 

 

 

 

Decorating Your Mask 

You can use anything and everything to decorate your mask. Really think about the character of your mask. You can also use cardboard and modroc to add features like ears and horns. Add feathers, felt, tissue, ribbon, cloth, buttons, and beads. Use thick acrylic paint to colour your mask. The acrylic will also help add texture.
