Officials Can Make ClubOperation Easier, Better

POLITICAL jobs have nothing on thegolf jobs for insecurity. Both owe
their uncertainty for able workers to lackof knowledge and understanding. Onlyrecently an incident occurred at a countryclub that had a touch of farce to it andthereby avoided a sorry climax. Fortu-nately, the general membership of theclub saw the facts in time or the clubwould have lost a first class golf coursesuperintendent, and the course superin-tendent would have had to undergo a try-ing period until he was able to situateelsewhere.
During the year the condition of thegolf course had not improved as much asthe membership had the right to hope,and, of course, the chairman of the greencommittee was blamed. He, in turn, im-mediately put the blame on the superin-tendent, and asked that he be fired, sayingthat he was unqualified; that he did notunderstand golf course upkeep, etc.
The members were right. The blamebelonged squarely on the committeeman'sshoulders. He had fought the superinten-dent throughout the whole year of histerm of office. The chairman had beenmore interested in showing the membershow much money he had saved them thanhe was in giving them the good golfcourse which they wanted. If the superin-tendent asked for something which wasdesperately needed the chairman alwayssaid, "No, we've got to keep expensesdown." When he, himself, wanted some-thing done, he would say to the superin-tendent, "The greens are too hard. Softenthem."
The superintendent asked for an aerat-ing device to open the greens, to soften

them up, but the chairman said, "It coststoo much. We've got to keep expensesdown."
"But an aerifler would do the job,"the superintendent pleaded.
"Water them. It's cheaper; but getthose greens so that they will', 'hold apitch."
So the superintendent poured water onthe greens and then the members com-plained about the greens going bad andstill not holding approaches.
Similar situations exist at many clubs.All that is necessary for correcting it is alittle understanding. In the first place,the chairman should be working with hissuperintendent not against a man withspecialized knowledge.
When the superintendent asks forsomething, it's not the place of the chair-man of the green committee to turn himdown right then and there. His job is todetermine if the request is justifiable, andthen to place that request with his rec-ommendations before the board of direc-tors. It is then up to the board to de-termine what can be afforded and whatcannot be afforded.
And when the members complain thechairman should talk the situation overwith the superintendent; find out thecause, the remedy recommended, and allthe other pertinent details. Once thechairman has this data he can discuss theproblem with the chairmen and superin-tendents at other clubs; find out what theyare doing, what they have done, andwhat they plan to do.
Armed with this data, he can intelli-gently ,discuss the problem with his own

team-mate who likewise should know thesituation at other clubs.
If possible the chairman .and the super-intendent should make these inspectionstogether. Thus working as a team, eachman will gain the other's respect and ad-miration, and the club will profit by hav-ing a better golf course.
In this way, the superintendent gets abetter close-up on the problems of theclub, and the club shares the problems ofthe superintendent.
The New Pro's Position
But this is only a segment of the club.There is the directorate; there is themanagement, and there is the pro depart-ment. They are the working vitals of anygolf club. These departments should workas a close knit unit, above all in harmonywith each other. The directorate is re-sponsible for the acts of all the depart-ments, and, it should strive always forbetterment. But this is not always thecase. Very often the uninitiated direc-torate in its enthusiasm to show themembership what it can do underminesthe club.
As in al'l mortal things hope lies in un-derstanding. The understanding of thedifficulties and personalities that makeclub jobs difficult. Let us take a look atsome behind-the-scene operations so wemay better understand what happens tothe pro after a month or two of service ata club,' unless he has an informed direc-torate behind him.
A cool attitude toward the person whois to occupy one, or two, or all three keypositions in a club exists before he haseven thought of applying for the vacancythat he wishes to fill. This coolness mayget its start from the person who hasbeen filling the job at the club, and whoseleaving creates the vacancy. He hasmade friends among the membership.Naturally, these friends "hate" to see himgo. They "hate" to see him replaced. Andthey also "hate" to see the new man takeover, and, therefore, the new man hassome enemies at the club even before hestarts on his new undertaking.
Then, as is the case of most good jobs,there are many unsuccessful candidatesfor the job; people who wanted the job,but did not get it. Each of these dis-appointed candidates had a friend or twowho are members of the club. These mem-bers spoke to one or two or more ofthe directors for their "champion."

Naturally, when they learn that their"champion" did not get the job, they aredisappointed. Further, unfortunately, per-haps unconsciously, they set up a re-sistance toward the new man.
The new man may have two strikesagainst him before he starts. But the mat-ter does not end there. Two more in-sidious conditions exist. Some who wereunsuccessful in obtaining the job forthemselves may be disappointed, envious,and spiteful, and malicious. "I'hey start aprogram to "get" the new man. Theydrop a derogatory remark here, anotherone there, and so on. Unfortunately,these "whispering" campaigns have anasty habit of gathering moss as they rollalong.
There to aid and abet the losers arethe disappointed members, the man whosponsored the "champion", the man who"hated" to see the friend leave and theman who has an ax to grind in general-all fall easy prey to these invectives.Sometimes they even start some of theirown.
How do these boys opera te ? Theyusually pick a weakness, a mistake made,an act of God and turn it to theirpurposes. As examples: The new pro playsin a tournament. He has a bad day, andshoots a 78. The wrecking crew beginsto say, "Your pro isn't much of a player,is he?" Or in the case of the golf coursesuperintendent; they wait for a brisk daywith a dry wind. They remember thisday. "You need a new course superin-tendent," they begin. "He doesn't knowhow to care for greens. Last Thursdaythey were as hard as rocks." The averagemember does not know that a dry windputs a hard surface to any green withina very short time.
Or the member who blames the man-ager for his spilling his Martini on thebeautiful evening gown of his fellow mem-ber's wife. "The tables were too closetogether. There wasn't enough room tomove. The manager should have moresense than to make such arrangements."
All these comments have a peculiar wayof reaching the directorate of the club.And to please their membership they firethe unlucky man, And the whole riga-marole starts all over again. That is,it starts all over again if the club has aninexperienced directorate. The seasonedboard of directors can and does judicious-ly sift the complaints.
Then again there is "chopping of heads"
