Make up categories

• Powder - make-up that is dry and is in fine particles. Usually is translucent powder. Comes in different shades. Used to “set” the make-up. Lasts up to 2 years. Use powder puff or big brush to apply.

• Cake - pressed powder. Usually rouge or eye shadow, but can also be foundation. 1-2 years

• Crème - between a powder and a liquid. Usually darker in color. Lipstick and color wheels are the most often used. Usually lasts 10-16 months

• Liquid - Used when precision is necessary (i.e. sharp lines, wrinkles, etc). Most easily contaminated. Usually only lasts 2-6 months.

• Foundation - make-up that is used as a base for actor’s skin - “removes” imperfections. Should make skin tone as closely as possible (for most general make-up designs).

• Translucent Powder - Used to “set” the make-up after application. Applied with Powder Puff. Should also “match” skin tone approx.

• Color Wheel - a device make-up artists use with several colors in it so they don’t need to buy lots of different colors separately. Bought by the effect.

• Spirit Gum/Remover - “Glue” for make-up. Allows actors to stick things (ie facial hair or prosthetics) to their skin. Should always remove with Remover.

• Nose/Scar wax - allows make-up designs to “build” up skin for special effects. Should “match” skin tone.

• Stage Blood - Used to create fake blood effects on stage. 3 types - “Fresh scab”, Liquid, Thick

• Latex- Used for wrinkles, scars, etc. Make of a liquid type of rubber.

• Sealers, LiquiSet - Used to “set” the make-up for heavy sweaters.

• Prosthetics - Fake body parts or effects “glued” onto the face with spirit gum (i.e. bald cap, fake nose, bullet wounds, etc)

Styles

• Moulage/SFX - “gore” make-up - used for “casualty simulation”

• Stylized/SFX - Usually used in fantasy designs and/or when an actor needs to look like an animal or inanimate object (Cats, Beauty and the Beast, Cirque Du Soleil)

• Period - Make-up that is designed to reflect the make-up choices of a specific period of time

(Restoration, 40s, 60s,80s, etc)

• Corrective - Used most often - make-up is used to correct actors physical attributes (i.e. nose too big, make eyes look bigger, etc)

• Old Age - Actors need to be “advanced” in age through make-up. Achieved principally through the techiques of using HIGHLIGHT and SHADOW.
