“School field trips enrich the curriculum
by providing first hand experiences.”
Outdoor Education in and around Tameside’s countryside. Immerse yourself in the natural world and get all 'touchy feely'
through a wide range of sensory activities all linked to the Julia
Donaldson book ‘Superworm’.
Children will be asked to use their super hero senses and powers
of discovery to discover the touch and smell of the greenspaces
around Park Bridge. After meeting at the Heritage Centre and
being introduced to our very own ‘Superworm’, we can go on a
short nature walk stopping along the way to
do some fun, sensory activities .
We can finish with a worm charming
challenge and craft activity.
Why not combine this half day session with a
pond dip and bug hunt to make a full day of
adventures.
Half day for a class of 30 - £ 120 . Full day £ 180
For schools outside Tameside - £200
Suitable for Key Stage 1, 2, 3

“Superworm is
super long.
Superworm is
super strong.
Watch him
wiggle,
see him
squirm.
Hip hip horray
for
Superworm! “
This session is based on the book ‘superworm’ by Julia Donaldson .
Reading your group the story and getting them familiar
with the Superworm chant before the session
would be useful.
Location: Park Bridge and the Medlock Valley
Park Bridge Outdoor Education base
The Stables, Park Bridge
Ashton-u-Lyne OL6 8AQ
This session is based at Park Bridge Heritage Centre, however the days activities will take place outdoors in the surrounding area.
Please note that the session includes walking over sometimes uneven and unsurfaced terrain .
Purpose: Experiencing through our senses is the route to connecting more closely and memorably with the outdoor world. Our senses help us build our picture of the world and how it works. Most importantly, it is often our other senses - especially touch and smell - that give us real experi-ences that are personally meaningful and memorable and that connect us with the places we are in.
What you will get during the day:
Indoor space in the for introducing the day’s activities, storing of bags and coats and eating of lunch (weather dependent) and use of toilets.
Experienced Outdoor Education Visits Leader to lead learning activities during the day.
All field study equipment, worksheets, clip boards as required for all activities
A copy of our risk assessment of the activities to aid you with your planning
Times of session: This is normally a half day session but can be combined with a pond dipping session or outdoor creative activity to make a full day. A half day session can be tailored to suit the schools transport arrangements, but normally anytime between 9.30 arrival – 12.30 pm departure. If coming by coach the Drop off point in the morning is normally at the bottom of the hill to the Heritage Centre with a short walk uphill. ( A coach may struggle getting up the final bit of hill to the centre so best to park at the factory at the bottom.) Enter through the big archway gates where our staff will meet you.

Welcome to Park bridge and your education visits leader for the day. Safety briefing and
introduction to the topic, park bridge and the days activities.
Depending on the requirements of the group, ( our Outdoor Engagement Officer can discuss the alternatives
with you ) we will take a short stroll to either Rocher Vale, a 10 –15 minute walk away ,or to an area called
the Bright Shop, an accessible countryside area within 5 minutes easy walk of the centre.
Here we will investigate the natural world through a range of sensory activities .
These may include :
Find Superworm’s family: A great introductory activity hunting for the hidden ‘worms.’
Super smelly : We collect leaves, grass, bark, in fact anything we think has a smell and create a
super smelly magic potion to save Superworm .
Super vision : We will use our supereyes to look for all the different colours in nature.
Super feeler. Prickly and tickly…we get touchy feely and discover textures.
Superworm charming. We all take part in a worm charming dance.
Supersounds : we will make a ‘Sound Map’. for the children take home with them as a reminder of the day.
Finding Superworm’s friends : We will take part in a bug hunt using magnifyers, pots
and trays to find minibeasts or a pond dip in Rocher Vale
Craft activity… We will make our own Superworms with clay and natural materials .
Please note Activity timings are flexible and can be mix and match.
The class will be working outdoors for most of the session. They will need suitable, sensible
footwear and appropriate clothing . In the summer, long trousers or leggings are advisable as we may be
walking through long grass.
We will not cancel sessions in wet, rainy weather, and as we don't have an alternative indoor
activity we are at the mercy of the weather and carry on regardless!
