T i m i n g15–20 minutes
P ro c e d u re1 If possible, ask the students to sit in a circle or
h o r s e s h o e .
2 Give one card to each student.
3 Tell the students that they are going to mime
the expression on their card. Give a couple of
examples, e.g. do the iro n i n g or make a sandwich
and get the students to guess them.
4 Give the students a few seconds to think of a
way of miming the expression. Help them if
n e c e s s a r y.
5 The first student mimes their expression. When
another student guesses what it is, they shout
it out. When the expression is corre c t l y
guessed, the next student in the circle starts
m i m i n g .
6 The process continues round the circle, with
each student miming a l l the expressions that
came before, while the other students
simultaneously chorus the expression. So for
example, student number ten will have to
mime the previous nine as well as their own.
7 The activity continues until all the students
have mimed the expressions on their card s .
Notes & commentsThis activity works with anything up to twenty
students. For larger classes, divide the students
into two groups and have two independent
activities going on.
B e f o re the activity, the cards can be used to check
or teach the collocations. (1) Put the students into
small groups and give each group a set of card s .
Get the students to group the cards according to
whether they are make or d o e x p ressions. (2) Give
each student a card and get the students to stand
in two groups according to whether they have a
make or d o e x p ression.
