BACKGROUND Milagro is dedicated to sharing the vibrancy of Latino theatre, culture and arts education throughout the Pacific Northwest and across the country. We are a home for artists and audiences seeking authentic, Latino cultural experiences. We are a bridge to understanding latinidad and a mirror for those seeking cultural reflection. We value creativity and diversity; we embrace the risk of experimentation while respecting tradition and empower our artists to think creatively and act collaboratively. We are often irreverent but never irrelevant. We entertain our audiences; we give them pause to think, feel and imagine, to explore latinidad — identity, place and belonging — to reveal a fuller spectrum of humanity. As a visionary leader, we speak boldly and proudly; as imaginative artists, we embrace the provocative and playful; and as a friendly neighbor, we welcome everyone con todo corazón.

Since its inception in 1985, Milagro has commissioned 65 new works, developed 48 original multi-disciplinary performance programs, and toured 45 productions. Our outreach initiatives serve the underprivileged, at-risk youth, and under-served communities and individuals throughout the Northwest. Milagro uses its creative capacity and resources to collaborate with regional social service agencies to develop artistic programming that addresses important issues impacting health, education and cultural sensitivity.

The organization works in three distinct areas:

• Fully mounted productions and additional programming at the Milagro Theatre, with each season presenting a combination of English, Spanish-language, and bilingual performances.

• Teatro Milagro, an educational bilingual touring program, which tours Oregon and the nation crafting current global issues into original theatrical productions, educational residencies and workshops for elementary, middle and high schools, colleges and community-based organizations.

• Multilingual community arts & cultural education programming created to engage artists and audiences to promote positive change. Milagro shares its institutional resources to support cultural competence, nourish creative skills, and promote the next generation of art and artists.

Milagro acquired its performance and administrative home in inner southeast Portland in 1997, establishing Portland’s first Latino Arts & Culture Center: EL CENTRO MILAGRO.
