Summer is here, and with it our typical pattern of daily thunderstorms, so everyone please be careful when you are out on the water. Also with the increase in temperature be sure to hydrate and get out of the heat if you start feeling weak. The Harbor Committee has some work in the planning. If you can use a saw please con- tact John Adams or Don Faircloth to find out if you can help. As always with Summer comes Hurricane Season, so please read the Hurricane Prep Policy on the website to be ready if your have a boat in the Harbor or Dry Storage area. We have implemented some changes at the pool; these are an attempt to control non member use of the pool. See page 6 for more about the pool. We have had a fan-tastic start withsummer camp! Ibelieve all of thecampers had a blastlearning to sail. Allof our Optimist andBay Buddy campsare full at this time, but we do have a

few spots left open in our 420 groupfor anyone that would like to partici-pate. Registration is still online forthese open spots.

We are offering a High SchoolRookie Camp August 7th-10th. Thisclass will be a more in-depth clinicdesigned for teens interested in beingon a high school team or learning howto race 420s. We will sail from 10am –3pm for a fee of $75. We will hold an end of year clinic forGreen Fleet Optimist August 7-10.

Sailors for this clinic must have takena sail camp to attend. We will buildfrom skills they learned in camp andlearn more about boat speed alongwith some racing strategies. We willhold the clinic from 10am–3pm for afee of $75. I would encourage thisgroup to attend a Green Fleet raceAugust 18 and 19 in Gulfport, MS forthe Galloway Regatta and the

Wadewitz Regatta at our home clubSeptember 29 and 30. If you are inter-ested in either of these camp, pleasecontact me. Registration will be onlinefirst week of July. As I am writing this newsletter ourlocal youth sailor Pete McGriff isattending the 2018 US Sailing YouthChampionship in Wrightsville BeachNC. The dedication and work ethic ittakes to be chosen for this event can

not compare to your weekend racer. Iam sure we will hear some good newsnext month about his event. Our Optimist team is getting ready toattend the Junior Olympic Event inPensacola June 30. They will thenbegin a weeklong training session atPYC to prepare for OptimistNationals to be held there July 14–19. Have a question, want to get moreinvolved with our youth sailing pro-gram? The month of June started strong with jun-iors Liam Bishop, Nathan and GavinValentine, Pete McGriff, Sara Boyd, ParkerFrench and Nate Hartwell traveling to St.Andrews Bay with Jr Lipton coach, RobertAdams, and Capdeville chair, Eddie Adams torace the Viper at Candler Regatta.Saturday started strong with a heavy breezeof 10-15 knots. In the first race, our teamrounded the top mark with a big lead and keptit until problems on the downwind caused a

capsize and a DNF. However, they came backstrong switching out for a heavier crew andfinishing in 3rd place in both the second andthird races that day. Sunday brought a lighterbreeze and our team was able to finish with a4th place and another 3rd to finish 3rd overallin the regatta. The team cites the downwind angles for an

asymmetrical spinnaker as one their biggerchallenges with the new boat. An asymmetri-cal spinnaker allows the boat to sail fast on abroad reach rather than directly downwind.Playing the angles versus the speed is a newcondition to factor into race tactics. Challengeslike these make the high performance skiffchallenging and an exciting addition to theGulf Coast. The team was happy with their results and

all they were able to learn on the race coursethroughout the weekend. Thank you to coachesEddie and Robert Adams and all the parentswho towed boats and drove support boats tomake the weekend a great success.

FYC Junior Chandler Taloney, son of Tony and Gennifer, partici-pated in the 26th International Optimist Regatta held at St.Thomas Yacht Club June 10 through June 17. Three days of clinicsled by ten international coaches preceded the ten race series inwhich Chandler competed against 79 fierce, skillful competitorsrepresenting five nations. The full results are on the St. ThomasYacht Club website. Though he didn't get his hands on a trophy,Chandler's experience at the clinics and racing was rewarding.

6/3 What a Great start to ourSummer Race Series. Nice winds 10knots to start and up to 18 knots atthe finish. 5 boats out to enjoy thecourse set at X-S-W-N-X and quite arace it was. MOJO took the honorswith her very first win.Congratulations Terri, I'm sure therewill be many more to come. Gypsy

Wind was only 16 seconds behind andWanderer took third. Also it was great to see TWO (2)Beneteaus out at the same time.Looks like it will be a competitiveseason.6/10 I'm told it was another good dayon the water with a great Sea Breezeto make for nice sailing and racing.Same course X-S-W-N-X with windsincreasing during the race up to 18knots. Six boats started and Skedadlepassed everyone to win (Very niceRick) with Gypsy Wind 50 secondsbehind for 2nd and MOJO a littlelater for 3rd. Sorry MOJO, last weekI said it was your 1st win but actual-ly it was your 2nd win. Sailing the Regata al Sol ~ Erik Reuss

The 2018 Regata al Sol from PensacolaYacht Club to Isla Mujeres, Mexico, start-ed May 9, 2018, under sunny skies on acalm sea. The biennial race of 555 nauti-cal miles, sponsored by PYC andSouthern YC, featured 18 boats, 3 each inthe racing and multihull fleets and 12 inthe cruising fleet. Fairhope Yacht Clubwas represented by Loophole, skipperEric Reuss and crew Dave Clarkson, JohnClarkson and Al Weeks. The race beganwith light southerly winds which eventu-

ally gave way to dead calm for about 30hours; many in the fleet actually driftedback north by up to 10 miles during thebecalming. When the wind finally beganto fill in, the boats with the taller rigscaught the breeze several hours beforethe rest of the fleet and “sped” away.

Of course, whatwould a journeyacross the Gulfbe without astorm? Thisyear’s Regata alSol storm cameroaring in withwinds up to 60knots and dis-masted one of theparticipating

boats. Loophole took three boarding seas, one of which took out the bimini (there isa reason we wear PFDs and hookup to

jacklines). Following the storm wasanother dead wind period of about 10hours, which began to make finishingproblematic. Ultimately, half the cruising fleet did notfinish because of time, but all but the dis-masted boat made it to Isla for the paradeand party. A hearty congratulations, orfelicitaciones, to Perry Hockaday, BucYC,on his maxed out Hunter 40 Legend onfinishing First in class and Second infleet.
