Happy New Year!

As I reflect back on my first year as your Executive Director, I wanted to take this opportunity first to thank each and every one of you for your membership, your words of encouragement, support and advice, and your generosity and kindness. I am honored and proud to be your representative in the industry and cannot tell you how much I have enjoyed getting to know many of you and look forward to getting to know more of

CERTIFICATION COMMITTEE UPDATE

The Certification Board Committee held an all-day meeting in early November. The morning began with the Annual Certification Board training followed by the committee approving the first QEI ballots. The afternoon was spent reviewing items from the CET Certification Exams and updating the list of resource sources. It was a productive meeting and as always we appreciate our volunteers that allow this to happen.

Contact Lucia Coghlan at [email protected] or at 770.760.9660 for any questions.

you this coming year. It has certainly been an interesting and busy year with many changes - some very exciting and others a bit melancholy. First, we have many new members engaging in committees this year and I look forward to seeing the fruits of their labor. The Accessibility and Residential Committee, for example, has already hit the ground running with the completion of an important safety video that will soon be released. The Member Services Committee, as you know, has just released the brand-new healthcare plan that members requested. For information on how to enroll, contact [email protected]. There will be much more to come from these committees, as well as the others, as 2020 gets rolling.

On another note, we have had some changes in the NAEC staff office with the departure of Megan Ragan, Darrah Johnson and Shawn Cowden. We will miss them! In the meantime, we have recently hired two new individuals, whom I would like for you to welcome into our fold - Lucia Coghlan, Certification Manager and Tamarion Terrell, our new Office Assistant. We are also seeking someone to serve as a Manager of Marketing and Member Services, so stay tuned for news on that front.

As for upcoming events, please be on the lookout for details on the 2020 Spring Educational Conference, which will be in Wild Dunes, SC (near Charleston), April 19-22. We are hard at work finalizing details now so be on the lookout for registration to open this month. In addition, it’s a big year with UNITED Convention & Expo this fall in Houston, TX, September 13-16. I am very excited about this event as it will be my first UNITED. I hope that all of you plan to attend as there will be lots of fun, networking, and shared events with our partners: CECA, IAEC, and now Elevator U!

Signing off for now, but as I noted in a recent past Mainline, be on the lookout to hear from me when I am in your area. I love the one on one meetings with each of you when I am in your part of the world!

With warmest regards,

NAEC is proud to announce our new “Leave Behind” initiative.

Many of you voiced that a big benefit of your NAEC membership is networking with peers and suppliers in the industry. We heard you, and now ask for YOUR HELP to grow our membership! This new way of marketing gives you the ability to be involved in expanding your network opportunities.

“Joining NAEC produces results...invest your time and money in NAEC to improve and grow your business.” ~ Gary Schuette, Midwest Elevator

CONNECT WITH US.

How does it work?

NAEC will be sending out “Leave Behind” cards to all our members. When you meet someone, who is not yet a member of NAEC, just leave this card with them with your company name written on the back. Yes! It is that easy. Our card lists six reasons to join our association, as well as providing them with means to contact us for more information.

Besides networking, how does this benefit me?

We know how hard you work for this industry and taking the time to help NAEC will not go unnoticed. When a company reaches out to join NAEC that has received one of our cards they will tell us which company recommended them to join. Listed below are a couple of the benefits you can receive:

• Booth points – Suppliers! • Sponsorship discounts! • Podium recognition of your business at the Conference and Convention Awards breakfasts!

CONTRACTORArea Access is a family owned accessibility business serving the Mid-Atlantic area since 1983. Founder and owner, Scott Hobson, has opened four fully equipped showrooms in Norfolk, Manassas, Richmond, and Winchester, Virginia. His son, Tyler Hobson, manages their Richmond store. Area Access pride themselves on having the best employees. Their top management team has over 100 years’ experience between them, and they have team members that have been with them for over 25 years!

Their customer base falls under three categories. On the commercial side, they provide LULA elevators and wheelchair lifts up to 14 feet for building owners, government agencies, schools and churches. Their growth in stairlifts and their “through the floor” elevator business is due to the growing number of people who are struggling with knee pain, hip, and back problems. They also service new homes and new construction with residential elevators and offer many elevator styles to meet the needs of the homeowner. In addition to several lines of home and light commercial elevators, including the Symmetry models, they install vertical and inclined wheelchair lifts and stairlifts for both straight and curved rail applications.

Area Access has done many prominent projects over the years. Recently, they installed a very customized elevator

for the Embassy of Japan in Washington, DC. Other projects include the 2010, 2014 and 2018 Presidential Inaugurations, FBI Headquarters, King’s Dominion Amusement Park, the Jiffy Lube Live Concert Venue, the Library of Congress, General Gray’s residence, and Senator Bob Dole’s residence. Scott even installed a lift in the Azores in the 90’s.

They have been growing over the years and have had several acquisitions. In 2014, they acquired Ashley Elevators in Richmond, and in 2015, Abbott Stair Climbers in Northern Virginia. They recently acquired Eastern Elevator Co of Winchester. The Eastern acquisition is their first venture into commercial elevators larger than their LULA line. They expect good growth with this additional product category and are using Canton and Alliance Elevators.

With the addition of Canton & Alliance, Area Access now carries a full selection of accessibility products including: Symmetry Elevators, Inclinator Elevators, Pneumatic Vacuum Elevators, Wessex Elevators / Lifts, Savaria Through the Floor Lifts, Staying Home Through the Floor Lifts, Vertical and Incline Platform Lifts, Stairway Lifts: Acorn, Bruno, Harmar, Handicare, Stannah, and Staying Home Indoor and Outdoor Mobility Products, Canton Elevators, and Alliance Elevators.
