mission statement

We are three architecture students at the TU Delft and for one year we have put our studies aside to commit ourselves to society.

We want to upscale the fight against climate change by making sustainable housing accessible for everyone.

The technology is there, but is often too expensive or unknown. Therefore, we have developed a low-budget and do-it-yourself method for transforming a broken-down house into a self-sufficient home.

To demonstrate and share our methods, we will build a showcase in Detroit: the do-it-yourself city.

6. what are the unique features of our method ?

At present, sustainable building technologies are often state-of-the-art and still too expensive or unknown. Thus, only the people who know about these technologies or people who can afford can fight against climate change while reducing their energy bills. We are three architecture students from the TU Delft and we want to make sustainable housing accessible for everyone, so everyone can raise arms against these perils.

Recently, we purchased a property in Detroit, USA, which we are going to turn into a showcase for low-budget and do-it-yourself (DIY) renovation techniques.

Spread free education and knowledge around the worldThe open source renovation methods will be implemented and demonstrated on the ground floor of the house on 1995 Ford Street. These methods will serve as a menu for sustainable interventions. We display various solutions for the same item, added with useful information about costs, savings, suppliers and assembly instructions. This way people can choose themselves what solution they need, like or can afford. Afterwards, they can simply implement them in their own homes.

The methods will also be shared during free workshops in our demonstration home. Our partners at EcoWorks have been giving comparable workshops for over thrirty years. They will teach visitors about the use of utilities, the ins and outs of sustainable home transformation and how to deal with the finances.

Facilitate activity and aid to enhance the communityFurthermore, the ground floor will function as community home with free available space for the neighbours. A community home which can be useful for facilitating their initiatives and activities. Meanwhile, they playfully learn about the sustainable interventions and experience the comfort.

The second floor, with a separate front door, will be given to a family who recently has lost their home due to tax foreclosures. Their presence will revitalize the neighbourhood and will also provide proof-of-concept for our sustainable method: that people can life in energy neutral homes in a cost-effective way. Not to mention that we are helping a Detroit family in need.

Give the power to the peopleOur approach is a typical bottom-up initiative, a grassroots movement. Neighbours are involved in the design, building and programming. They are the force behind their Motown Movement. A famous quote that Detroits Chief City Planning and Development, Maurice Cox, told us:

nothing about us, without us, is for us.

Our ultimate aim is to inspire other homeowners. Together we can fight climate change, reinforce communities and reduce energy consumption. By sharing our exemplary housing project we push other people to act and follow through their ideas for change; turning an initiative into a movement.

7. why detroit ?

Detroit is the best place to start our pilot. Actual change starts with the desire to change. Before we visited Detroit, we expected to see an exceptional phenomenon happening: a metropolitan city in full decay. Instead, we saw a city putting itself back together and recovering its lost glory. What a resilience. This inexhaustible dedication inspired us as young architecture students.

When the financial crisis of 2008 forced the municipality of Detroit to file bankruptcy, it looked like the battle was worsening for the city that has been plagued by setbacks for decades. The effects of this catastrophic event are still very present in everyday life: broken-down buildings, empty neighbourhoods and high criminality rates. Therefore, it’s not entirely inexplicable that outsiders think of Detroit as a ghost town. Nonetheless, the inhabitants today will argue very differently. Detroit has managed to do the unthinkable: turn the end of days into a laboratory of the future.

The vast increase of people abandoning their homes has created heaps of open lots and left behind a great amount of recyclable materials. Fortunately, it didn’t take long before residents started to recognize its opportunities. In the past few years several great urban initiatives led by entrepreneurial citizens emerged, such as urban farms, art installations, communal sport fields, recycling projects and more. This powerful adaptiveness of the people of Detroit proves the city to be future proof.

Inspired by the Motor City’s Do-It-Yourself spirit, we see great potential in implementing modern but down to earth technologies in the current reconstruction. The search for self-reliance is fed by decades of mal governance in and surrounding the city. However, Detroit is getting there. Bottom-up movements led by citizens are achieving significant progress. The world is watching them intently: if Detroit manages to restructure the city successfully, this can be a model for the rest of the world’s (shrinking) cities. We want contribute to their ongoing movement by creating and sharing knowledge on an international scale. Let’s set an example!

Detroit has not only shown us that they embrace bold bottom-up initiatives, but also that they have the urge, capacity and desire desire to realize change. That’s why our pilot will be in Detroit.

8. what lies ahead ? : worldwide publication

Our primary aim is to inspire other homeowners. By sharing our exemplary housing project we push other people to act and follow through their ideas for change too. To reach as much people as possible, we develop an open-source method. Meaning that our findings will be free and open to the public. Subsequently, this brings a lot of consistent attention and use to our project and findings.

Our findings will be published through at least three kind of media: Online, in a documentary and in a book. Focussing the documentary more on the story of our project and the book more on the appliance of our findings. Our website will contain all information.

The BookFor a more tangible form of information, we will publish our findings in a book. The book will not only be a bare series of techniques and appliances. Supplemented with footage, the findings will be interwoven with the story of our project: from the moment we came up with the idea to go to Detroit until the moment in which mayor Duggan cuts the ribbon! The book will be published and sold in stores. It also serves as one of the perks of our crowdfunding campaign in the Netherlands and the USA.

The DocumentaryAs much as we want to innovate, we want to motivate others to do the same. Our story could serve as an inspiration to like-minded students and entrepreneurs so they will follow through their own ideas for change. The documentary will be made by a professional and distributed through different kinds of media. Who doesn’t want to hear about a passiondriven project by three young architecture students bringing change to the people!

The WebsiteFor all information we refer people to our website: www.themotownmovement.comThe method will be available too on our website, which is deisgned as a ‘one pager’. So that your company’s logo will be on the same page as the rest of our story.

what lies ahead ? : eco-districts

EcoDistricts is propelling a new model of urban regeneration that ensures just, sustainable, resilient neighborhoods. EcoDistricts partners with urban regeneration practitioners, city makers, and civic leaders across North America to support thriving neighborhoods for all.

Through an integrated suite of programs, learning experiences and project certification tools, EcoDistricts aims to forever change how urban regeneration gets done.

With their roots in Portland, Oregon, they’ve built a global reputation as a respected nonprofit committed to address the complex, fundamental challenges facing our cities today: Income, education, and health disparities that sit at the root of considerable social unrest. Ecological degradation. The growing threat of climate change. Carrying the burden of producing 80% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions while consuming 80% of the world’s energy.

In partnership with their Founding Members, generous funders and world-renown advisors, they’ve developed the unique EcoDistricts Protocol, a first-of-its-kind, holistic project development framework that makes addressing these challenges achievable. Their work emphasizes the unique proving ground of the district and neighborhood scale, and the critical importance of information sharing to stimulate innovation.

Their vision is to empower practitioners at every stage of our industry with a collaborative professional community, transformative learning experiences, pathways to EcoDistricts project certification and accessible practitioner accreditation. They are committed to a model that eliminates barriers to the exchange of information and peer learning and thereby enable innovation across our industry.

The Detroit Chapter

Together with EcoWorks, operating partner of EcoDistricts in Detroit, we agreed that The Motown Movement project is suitable for the Eco-D protocol. When the pilot project succeeds, our project will be added to the program. In Detroit, two new neighbourhoods are picked annualy to take part in the program. EcoDistricts is a nationwide program in the USA and Canada.

what lies ahead ? : tu delft master course

TU Delft’s mission is to make a significant contribution towards a sustainable society for the twenty-first century by conducting groundbreaking scientific and technological research which is acknowledged as world-class, by training scientists and engineers with a genuine commitment to society and by helping to translate knowledge into technological innovations and activity with both economic and social value.

The Faculty of Architecture and the Build Environment at the TU Delft educates young architects to meet these standards. Together with its dean and professors we are discussing the possibilities on how to make The Motown Movement a recurring project, because it so perfectly fits into their vision and mission. The Building Technology track is one of five specialisation tracks within the Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences master programme at the faculty.

The Building Technology track encompasses a broad spectrum of engineering and architectural design skills that lead to one of the dominant professions of the future: the sustainable designer. The emphasis of this programme is on the design of innovative and sustainable building components and their integration into the built environment.

Through focusing on structural, façade and climate design, students learn how to contribute to smart buildings that are sustainable, comfortable and environmentally intelligent. This programme stands out internationally because of its integration of architectural design with technical disciplines, filling the niche between architecture and engineering. Rather than focusing on one or two specialisations, students investigate the whole breadth of building technology, looking at climate design, façade design and structural design, producing designers that know how engineers work.

The Motown Movement master course

In collaboration with the professors and dean within our faculty we are setting up a master course. This annual course will be led by professors and executed by students of the TU Delft. We are currently discussing with the Lawrence Technological University of Detroit about an exchange course between the two universities.Every year a new group of students will rehab a home within an eco-district.

10. meet the team

These are our wonderful team members . They are proudly working every day to make this project come true.

Bob Hendr ikxCo-founder & BSc Arch i t ecture

Dom in ik LukkesCo-founder & BSc Arch i t ecture

Ronen DanCo-founder & BSc Arch i t ectureRonen was born in 1993 in Breda, The Netherlands. Architecture has been his passion since he’s been 9 years of age. However travelling was not long off. Before starting his bachelor degree of architecture at the University of Technology in Delft, he worked and travelled several places around the world. He never felt uncomfortable when thrown in at the deep end. He did so when travelling and continues to do so with the project in Detroit, MI.During his studies he took a course in Sustainable Urban Development, which gave him lots of insights in urban development around the world and the social importance of architecture. The Motown Movement is his first contribution to making architecture for the people and helping create a sustainable future. He states architecture is not just stacked bricks, it ’s the physical form of a social ideology. Therefore each brick placed is embedded in the ideas and values of the designer. Given Detroit is recovering from a unparalleled downfall, it ’s the perfect urban laboratory for the future city.

Dominik was born in 1993 and raised in the small picturesque village of Weidum, in the most northern province of the Netherlands, Fryslân. After finishing secondary school, he swapped the countryside for the city and went to study architecture at the University of Technology in Delft. There his affection for architecture grew rapidly and in 2014 he did a 3-month internship on the Dutch Caribbean island of Bonaire. During this internship he did a small study on the opportunities for sustainable building in the region of the Caribbean islands. This was when his interest for sustainable building began to take form. For the final project of his bachelor he designed a sustainable and completely demountable building that would fit within the circular economy. The circular economy is a rising theme within the world of designing and building and it aims to keep products, components and materials at their highest utility and value at all times, meaning there is no waste in the cycle. During the final project, his friends Bob and Ronen approached him and asked him if he wanted to join them on their adventurous trip to the United States. Not entirely unexpected, it didn’t take him long to think about it.

Bob came to earth in the city of innovation and light: Eindhoven. During secondary school he started a company which specialized in maintaining and designing gardens. Since 2012 he has been studying architecture at the University of Technology in Delft. In his third year he put together a minor as part of his bachelor, containing an internship in Amsterdam at the firm Mooi Lost Op, which specialises in transforming old buildings, and an intership in Berlin at the architectural firm Wilk & Salinas, which are know for their floating swimming pool, named ‘Badeschiff.’ Receiving an A for his final bachelor project, Bob acquired his bachelors degree with honours. During this final project, he invented a new building method which he is eager to put into practice. Besides his study Bob loves to be an entrepreneur. In 2014 he started his own creative studio called ‘de Vlaggen Kamer’, which focusses on graphic design, film, architecture and branding. With his distinct vision on the current ways of building, Bob sees a unique chance in applying a sustainable building method in Detroit, using his biggest passion: sustainable architecture.
