The Maine Government Summer Internship Program places talented Maine college students in internships in which they contribute to state and local government. The students gain meaningful work experience, make professional connec ons, and gain insight into career goals. The supervisors benefi t from eager workers with fresh perspec ves and a variety of skills who care deeply about contribu ng to Maine government.
The Internship Program is a full- me, 12-week, paid work experience. To be eligible, a student must either be enrolled in a Maine college or be a Maine resident enrolled elsewhere and have successfully completed at least two years of college. Students are chosen based on skills and interests; all majors are eligible.
Supervisors select projects for the intern to accomplish and iden fy the skills required for the job. A selec on commi ee reviews all applica ons and makes the fi nal selec ons. Considera on is given to educa on and skills in rela on to the available internship posi ons.
This year, 215 students applied and 57 were selected. Most state interns were placed in the Augusta area, and fourteen interns were placed in municipal governments.
The program, established in 1967 by the 103rd Legislature, has placed more than 1700 students in Maine government internships.

Comments From Interns
“The best things were the connec ons I made. I got to meet people in careers that I may be interested in.”
“This internship taught me how to take risks, like speaking up in a mee ng to suggest doing something diff erently and then watching my ideas actually become reality.”
“My supervisor was the best part of this internship. He went out of his way to make sure I experienced a wide variety of projects and departments.”
“I got to see the other side of engineering, not just the ni y-gri y hands-on stuff , but the contrac ng part. It’s not just highways and bridges.”

“The applica on process was simple and provided the informa on needed for the selec on commi ee to make good choices.”
